Piggybacking off that Schmaltz idea.... Here's a potential roster that would actually sit under the 82.475M cap for next year:

- Trade Girard + JTC to Arizona for Schmaltz + Ghostisbere(@2.25M)
- Re-Sign Nichushkin(6x5.0M)
- Re-Sign Kuemper(3x4.5M)
- Re-Sign Lehkonen(4x3.5M)
- Re-Sign Manson(3x3M)
- Re-Sign NAK(1x1.25M)
- Re-Sign Helm(800k)
- Re-Sign Cogliano(800k)
- Sign Nick Paul(5x4.25M)

Nuke - Mack - Rantanen
Landy - Schmaltz - Newhook
Lehks - Paul - NAK
LOC - Meyers - Helm
Cogliano

Toews - Makar
Byram - EJ
Ghost - Manson
MacDermid/????

Kuemper
Francouz

That roster would be at a salary of 80.25M leaving just over 2M left in space still as well. To potentially upgrade NAK into a more reliable 3rd liner at say ~2M instead, and/or to add a better 7th Dman so MacDermid fits as the #8.

I think all of these guys are going to be more expensive than you have listed here.

- Re-Sign Nichushkin(6x5.0M)
- Re-Sign Kuemper(3x4.5M)
- Re-Sign Lehkonen(4x3.5M)
- Re-Sign Manson(3x3M)

As it has been pointed out--Kuemps was not good in the final month of the regular season, and quite shaky the final 10 games of the season. His lone elite performance in that time was the shutout against these Oilers.

He also let in more than a couple stinkers against Nashville prior to the eye injury.

The eye injury and possible concussion obviously made things much worse but I don't buy that the eye thing was the lone cause of Kuemper's faulty play. He was bad prior to that.

It's so had to tell. Darcy had problems with rebounds, shots through traffic, and the occasional soft goal pretty much all year. It popped up every week or two.

But the way he played the final two games against the Blues and game 1 against the Oilers was easily he worst he's looked all year. He just looked shaky as hell, like he didn't have much confidence in himself, or his reads.

But as @PAZ alluded to, the question is did he look that much worse because he was having trouble dealing with the pressure, or because he was getting hit in the mask with pucks in these games, and it was making his vision worse?

Oh yeah!
I’d say at least an extra million on Average.

If they ask for more you walk away IMO. Especially Manson.

I also don't really see how Lehkonen gets more as an RFA. Most of his comparables are in the 3.5M range.

Kuemper might get more but I'm not really comfortable paying much more. IMO he hasn't earned that money with us. If Edmonton wants to give him 5+ then have at it(Though they might not be so inclined after this series either), just go after Campell in UFA or possibly Husso.

That’s $1.1M less than Manson is making now.

This has felt like a likely plan for a little while now. Just not a lot of other options and at least Varly is a known commodity, and knows the system.

Problem is they don't have a 2nd the next there years, so they'll have to find one, or move something comparable.
In the last mock I was in I got it done for Kaut, Bowers and Ranta.

I’d give Subban league minimum to be our 8th D. I think the Avs could help with his speed. I mean they made MacDermid an almost competent skater.

One thing I'll say... More and more it sucks that Naz is going to price himself out of our budget range.

What a year he has had for us all year, and now what a playoff run he's putting together. Literally been the perfect 2C for this team all year and he's stepping up big time in the playoffs. On top of that, his line with Mikko and Lehky are starting to get some really nice chemistry together.

I dunno if they can do it, but letting Burakovsky walk(And replacing his roster spot with Nehwook at 900k) and using that $4M towards Kadri and Nuke raises would be something I would at least explore this summer.

Say Val goes from $2.5M to $5M, you've got $1.5M of those savings left to spend on Kadri which would get him to $6M. I dont think that would be enough sadly but if you can convinced him that Denver and the Avs are his team now, maybe $6.5M?

I think he ends up going for $7.5M, maybe even $8M in free agency which we just cant afford realistically but gah, his play this year and now this post season has me wishing we could keep him around.

Red Flags on Kadri:

Career year in a contract year are typically a bad investment

He’s going to want long term which maybe harder to swing than the salary. Sakic can do some juggling before Byram becomes due, but that’s like 3 years.

If it's true that Zacha is on his way out, it wouldn't shock me at all to see the Avs trade for him in the offseason.

I seem to remember there being a lot of chatter about the Avs being interested in drafting him before they were *forced* to go with Rantanen.

He has the "high draft pedigree reclamation project" title that the Avs have a history of targeting.

The Avs have a good trading relationship with New Jersey

Zacha is from Brno, Czechia, same as Kaut. Could bringing the Czechs together and forcing them to attend a week long wildness survival experience with Milan Hejduk ignite both of their potentials?
