It was tense that’s for sure. That offer sheet completely tore the Rangers apart and really screwed up the market for years to come. I think a lot of GMs were furious with Smith and the Rangers for years after that.

That's putting a lot of trust in a rookie to play an important role right away though and moving JTCs 3.5M this summer means not having that freed up cap space in 2023 when Mack is a UFA, Newhook, Byram, and Meyers are all RFAs as well .


IMO if you keep Manson, it probably means you gotta move one of Byram/Girard/Toews.


Tbh if the Avs feel Byram is ready to be Cales partner, perhaps you look at a Toews deal in the summer. They would fetch a kings ransom for him if they went that route. Then the Defense goes to:

Not happening. We're not in asset management stage, we're going for it every year which means we're using every year of Toews' sweet heart contract to win games. Also, girard gets traded before toews and I think we can get a good price as well.

My thought would be that he overplays his hand and ends up taking a reduced contract. Wouldn’t want to get into a bidding war for him.

No to trading Toews. Avs are in their contending window and that $4.1m deal is huge value for the next 2 years. Maybe you consider moving him in 2023 with just one year left if Byram and Girard are playing well, but until then it's not even worth considering.

And that’s exactly why the Kuemper trade from my POV was so risky. You’re getting an above average goalie and banking on everything working all in one season. Series isn’t over yet, but we’re trending towards another Gru situation with a very very bleak outlook on available goalies.

Smith playing over expectation for sure. Raanta injured too often. Hot streaks happen.

Bura is the obvious man out, then Girard.. his body is simply too weak for playoffs. He gets battered every time and hurt.

6M for EJ is far from ideal but its only for one season. Pretty sure he will stay here after next season and won't demand too much.

We can petition Toronto to add the three rings that were removed from the cup that contain all the teams and names for winners prior to the 64/65 season. That should make it a bit bigger.

Ya I don't think Bura is back and Kadri is likey (sadly) gone, but I think we see another year of JTC and EJ. Could see them retaining Manson and Helm and maybe even Cogs, but not Sturm. NAK is an interesting case, but think he's gone. More or less same forward group with Meyers replacing Sturm and Newhook in for Bura. Major moves will be what happens at 2C and G, everything else pretty status quo IMO
