He had a very solid game. He was strong along the boards and he was able to create some offence on most shifts. I have no problem with the slow approach in terms of earning ice time and a spot higher up in the lineup. People forget that he only has 12 NHL games under his belt and had to deal with an injury and suspension.

Just a quick FYI he is not and never will be an Ovechkin
How would you know? I mean, Ovi had a great first season in the NHL. At the age of 20. In his 18yo season he had 24pts in 54 games in the Russian league. As a 19yo he scored 26 pts in the Russian league. How in the world would you have known Ovi would turn up 100+ pts in the NHL when he was Slaf's age?

Ovi was Ovi when he was 16. I saw him live at U18 WC. He is late 85 and was playing against 84, but he was extremely dominant. He was not a project sniper, he was and is a natural sniper, generational player. You just knew this kid will win Maurice Richard trophy.

I never really notice him to honest lol

Whether he's going to live to the lofty expectations of a first overall pick or be a decent 40 points big skilled forward, we don't know yet.

But not noticing him? I mean he clearly has a unique blend of size and skills in full display when he's on.

It almost sounds like you willingly avoid seeing him lol.

Sure, Ovi did have great U18 tourneys. On the other hand I've seen Slaf in the Olympics and WC. He is 2004 but was playing against 1990. He was tearing it up and didn't even need Malkin on the point. (back at the 2004 I thought Malkin was the better player, was a bit surprised Caps took Ovechkin over him).

Not sure how an Ovechkin comparaison became in play. There are vastly different players. Slaf is big and strong sure, but that's where it stops. He is a Rantanen type as he is skill first and power second, you won't see him putting guys through the glass like Ovi.

Whatthe heck are you on about. Slaf HAS to start somewhere. Thus far he has demonstrated very little ability reading or making plays in this league. If and when he gets better linemates that may change. But his job right now is simple use his size to his advantage. That means driving the net and creating space for his team mates using his touch in front of around and behind the net to create offense. I will be quite happy if he turns out as good as TJ Oshie. We haven't drafted a super star.
We are a grinding team!

Ceiling this, ... ceiling that, ...
Well, Slaf's ceiling is Slaf, I am enjoying him getting there. :)

Hey, if he ends up better than Rantanen, I'm good with that.

And another poster said he’d be quite happy if he ended up like Pierre Engvall. Nothing wrong with setting the bar real low.

If you put tonight’s two linemates’ total production this season you have a grand total of 1 point (1 assist to be more precise). Neither has ever produced in Juniors and probably not even in Bantam and Atom. Evans is minus-6. There’s just so much you can expect from anyone under those circumstances.
I still don't understand where he even pulled Oshie from. Slaf doesn't resemble Oshie in the slightest.

There’s not many Power Forward among NHL top-tier Forwards. Slaf never was and never will be a pure skilled forward in the McDavid or Kucherov mold. They have a different development arc.

Just speculating… Maybe the best way to teach him to use his body and reach and just drive the net is by cutting off completely the pass option (I.e playing him with Evans and Pezzetta). They don’t want him to get too cute with Monahan?

Part of it has to be related to managing the excess of forwards. Veterans can’t complain about a rookie 1st OA getting 4th line minutes.

In the 2nd part of the Columbus game we saw 2-3 shifts where Slaf & Pezz were able to create some pressure on the boards, Slaf seemed more able to execute what he planned to do (either by better execution or better decisions).

If they can start doing that on a regular basis MSL is gonna bump up Slaf to 3rd line.

No, it does not stop there. :D
Slaf's one-timers on PP are similar, Slaf can score as well. ;)

so…
he’s the hab’s most “efficient” scorer, with a goal every 11:07 of icetime (Suzuki needs 20:07, Caufield 17:47 for a comparison…)

also interesting comments from Hughes on Marinaro’s podcast yesterday how he had to tell Lecavalier (as his agent) to stop going wide/always towards free ice when he didn’t have the puck because he’d never touch it. I See that in Slaf where he’s super active in puck retreival and protection, but does not really drive into the circles much without it, and is passive to me as the 3rd forward for example. I feel he is a click and a line promotion away from great things.

Once he gets stronger he is going to be a problem downlow. There was a shift last night where he just took the puck and strolled around in the back of the jackets net back and forth. The defenders were bouncing off him.
Yes. It was quite an impressive exhibition of keep away. This kid is going to be a beast when he’s 21. He, Xhekaj and Mailloux will relegating the Smurf images to the wastebasket as we become a decidedly heavier team to play against.

He started doing some of that last evening. People trip because I suggest we simplify his game.

He resembles TJ Oshie a hell of a lot more than the names you brought up. Protects the puck has decent hands and can score goals. Not so much a play maker at this point. He's never going to be Rantaanan.

Not until we get rid of some dross.

Dude everyone knew.

I missed last nights game, but I am thankful for highlights like this. I know McCagg is pumping his tires a bit....but still that is impressive puck control and board work for an 18 year old. At 22 he will be an absolute beast.

He's the kind of player who you hate to play against. Just tires the hell out of you, and he's got the hands to punish you if you get sloppy.

I love the way he plays. Got his first assist last night as well.
