For me - and that's for any players whatever their team - it should be 10 + games. And doubling each time it is happening with the same player 10-20-40- one full season + Playoffs...... MAYBE, they would learn !

They gave 40 games to Ric Nattress for smoking a joint at Junior level.....
Players would be so terrified of something happening by accident, nobody would hit at all anymore. May as well just formally ban hitting if that’s the route you’re going to take.

Things happen; it was a dumb play probably due to a young player’s inexperience. It wasn’t malicious or an intent to injure. Let’s not get crazy.

Slafkovsky now holds the record for quickest NHL suspension for a player taken first overall.

Fact.
He also now holds the record for a player taken first overall to be suspended on the 9th day of November and bunch more records I can make up.

The kid made a mistake. Shit happens. People are making a mountain out of a molehill because it’s the Habs.

So Slaf (or any NHL rookie) never played the game before ? They are on skates since they are 2 years old and play since their childhood in organized teams with coaches and referees. They know the rules.

Generations of hockey players have gone thru the NHL and never (or rarely) hit someone from behind near the boards. 40 years ago, they were stil mostly playing without helmets.

Not at NHL speed against players as fast and strong as NHLers. It would be hard to find the balance between wanting to show your physicality, protecting yourself, making the right play, etc. Would be easy to do too much, especially when you are trying to earn your place.

Even with 2 games it's rare that players repeat it unless they're are Sean Avery types.

Now 40 games for smoking a joint that is an insane rule. It's not cocaine.

Do you really want to go down that road? Lmao. Sure let’s talk about stuff you could get away with 40 years ago.

Slaf was playing against men in Finland, at the Olympics and the World.... Slaf doesn't have to worry about his place. He is a 1st overall pick.

There was certainly less of those behind the back crosschecking near the boards.

Then why are people saying he’s not ready, should be sent to the AHL, should have went back to Europe, etc?

Proof?

There was a lot of shit that went on that was much worse that happened in the 90s and as recently as the early 2000s.

The kid is improving every game, and by mid season, he will be a real full time NHL player with top-six potential and impact.

90's is 30 years ago... I am watching hockey since the mid-1960's. There was more fighting for sure. But those kinds of hits were very rare.

I wish he would hit even more often and recklessly. Turn into an animal of a player. A self-controlled predator like Mark Messier used to be. Keeps opponents guessing on how far he might go, which would give him and his linemates more space and a psychological advantage through intimidation. To have that little black corner in your mind, that your opponent aren't sure what the hell is gonna happen in the corner. Doubt he has the personality for it though. Brutality is absolutely a great tactical edge, although in this case it was obviously unintended.
I think Slaf messed up, there… but I miss mean ass hockey.

As for his personality well he got hit a couple of times near the boards himself in the last few weeks and the game is still fast to him... Not sure I’d call him a predator yet, but the hormones must be flowing in there at the end of a game, he’s a big kid and probably still getting stronger every week. Heck he just lost the braces and his voice is still breaking :)

He’s going to keep being targeted though can he fight? Messier would go for your knee and slam his fist in your face if you retaliated When he started round 1980

no but 200 foot races to flatten the D on a negated icing would sure get the crowd going back then. And head hunting was celebrated (Both of which I hated to be clear)

Slafthugsky suspended -- he's really following Josh Anderson's footsteps and rhythms indeed. :sarcasm:

He better some boxing lessons and quick. He will have to answer, I am sure.
Before Slaf does that, he could reach out to the player.

As for payback, it’s what teammates do. Slaf will have to learn to at least defend himself so he doesn’t in turn, get injured. I hear Laraque is available for lessons.

There was worse things going on. Late hitting and head shots especially, but also hits from behind. In no way is it worse now, and the incident with Slaf is not anywhere close to some of the stuff we’ve seen. That’s the main point. If the league wants to set an example, fine, but let’s not act like what Slaf did was anywhere near as bad as countless other things we’ve seen over the years. It wasn’t a malicious play at all, he just made the wrong decision in the heat of the moment. Mistakes happen.

If you want to choose to see things in black and white, to each his own then. Discretion, nuance, and context matter, and have tremendous value when assessing situations and making decisions. People who have sense when it comes to these things are the ones we want in charge, not the rigid, narrow-minded, by the book types.

Mistake or voluntary: the result is the same. A guy has been, could be, badly injured.
