I'm guessing you're being ironic?
More than his 3 goals, Slaf has impressed me with his nifty passes, that sadly are aimed at clueless linesmates.
Put this big kid with decent linesmates and he would already have at least 10 points in the bank.
He has to be promoted soon and play with Monahan.
Slafkovsky os abetter playmaker than scorer, actually. You're right that, with better line mates, he's have at least double, if not triple the points by now. Many scoring opportunities he created have been wasted by his line mates.

I'd like to see the TOI as well
I would bet the other guys played in the top 6 right away.
Pretty useless stat, as Daigle being at the top shows.

Wasn't there a similar stat for Kotkaniemi with respect to goals in his first x number of playoff games at one point?
You don't have to take it seriously. It just shows how Slaf compares as an 18 year old. That is all.
God I hate this guy, anything to push his agenda
Welp, he did pick Slaf all year long and got it right. He can brag about it all he wants.

Where's Kovalchuk? Kane? Why is Lecavalier listed as 1 in 10 and not 3 in 13? Why is Hughes not 4 in 14? I just did stats for all 18 year olds 1OA picks...
Good Ol' Grant.

Him being right doesn't make him sound like any less of a D-Bag. Those things aren't mutually exclusive

Yes I don't take it seriously. It only shows how he compares as a 9 year old after 9 games.

While I like the tools and the potential, the current version of Slaf I hope is only a shell of his future self, because he's only so good right now. Whereas many players on that list were stars right away. So regardless of the numbers, I don't put him in the same category as many players on that list. But, I hope he can eventually reach his own high potential.

Joe Thornton sucked his 1st year and didn't put up good numbers, but ended up as a Hall of famer. Nail Yakupov had good numbers his first year but ended up only being a KHLer. Early numbers don't mean much, especially the first 9 games.

Keep him happy?
What lol?
He’s making millions of dollars…what is the connection with him being a slave or not?
He’s a professional athlete contracted to an NHL team.
Goodwill has nothing to do with anything with all due respect.
The Montreal Canadiens are running a business, not a NPO.
I am sorry for the dystopian world you live in. I hope you don't work in Amazon warehouse.

The Montreal Canadiens are running a business, and the core of that business is getting as much as possible from their players. _LONG TERM_, especially at this moment.

In my world, that means keeping your employees happy and motivated. Not only with sticks but also carrots. And no, $$$ is not the only carrot - the human side of things (aka goodwill) is actually quite relevant. $$$ is helpful (being underpaid breeds resentment), but the intangible stuff is what gets people ticking long term.

But then, failure to understand this had sunk many businesses, so who knows, we will see. The America is the land of short term thinking.

He's such an inconsistent jackass. Can't even stick to the same GP between all the players because he has an agenda to push. Not sure why anybody gives this loon any attention. He has zero insight.

Or he's saying exactly what he means to say when posting a grouping of players with stats. Here is added context, not a be all and end all of points. Try not to read too deep into to find a reason to get angry at Grant and turn it into a way to poop on Slaf.
The reason people react negatively to Grand McAgg is because he's an inconsiderate braying jackass. Most people can see right through his ultra bad faith "analysis". It's just like with this "Kotkaniemi scored the Xmost goals of players under 20 in the playoffs" meaningless stat alchemy.

You can imagine Grant with a little banker's visor trying to chop and churn through the numbers in a way that he thinks is best. He read How to Lie With Statistics and thought it was a professional guidebook.

 A lot of people seem to selectively use chunks of data to advance their 'ultra bad faith analysis'. Imagine if Slaf scored 1-2 more goals in his next 2-3 games? Almost as if small sample sizes are good for the goose until they aren't good for the gander.

Most of all, those who think "league points in their draft year" and "PPG in their rookie NHL season" to be selective and overly judicious are also operating in bad faith.

Even more so, those who ignore any measure of context to push the same exact narrative in every single comment they make on the subject are operating in even worse faith.

Context such as the Habs' history of rushing top draft picks and an organization-wide inability to develop a single point-producing forward -- these bits of context shouldn't be ignored when it comes to it, you're right.

But enough sarcasm, I'm a grown man and I presume you're old enough to speak clearly -- what is it about Grant McCagg that gets you off? Is it his bristly personality that you find endearing or his charming inability to contain himself?

??? I get off to Grant? Keep reaching, but this conversation is clearly done. Troll better next time.

Well, this is false. I am in Slovakia and I care :naughty:

What I meant was that generally nobody cares. I am also interested and always watch the WJC. But I'm sure 95% of Slovaks have no idea when the WJC is, who is playing and what the results are. When it's the men's world championship, the pubs are full or people are at home watching matches with their friends. Even people who don't normally watch hockey follow the results and cheer for the team.

What a terrible statement. I dare to say that Slovakia trails only behind Canada and maybe Finland in WJC popularity

I don't know why it's good for you to make such ridiculous claims. But I guess that's how the internet works these days....

I tried to look up the WJC viewing figures... I couldn't find anything :DD Which shows how very few people are watching and interested in WJC games in Slovakia.

No WJC-related programmes were in the top 10 of the most viewed list in August. But judging from historical data, it wasn't even in the top 1000 - Čo sme pozerali v auguste: Záver leta patril návratu seriálových hitov a finále Oteckov

When the men's world championship was on in May it dominated the ratings in Slovakia, as it does every year. Almost 900 thousand people watched the match against the Finns - Májové obrazovky ovládol hokej. Ktoré programy mu dokázali konkurovať a ktoré prepadli?

The 17 most watched programmes were all the men's World Championship. Even the friendly match against France was watched by a huge number of people and produced viewing figures that no WJC match has ever come close to.

Btw, the match against Finland at the Olympics was watched by almost 1.5 million people in Slovakia even though it started at 5am - Hokejové šialenstvo! Medailový súboj Slovákov prekonal miliónovú hranicu

I don't know if you're lying about being Slovak or if you're living in some kind of altarnative reality. But the fact is that very few people are interested in WJC in Slovakia, while the men's WC are close to a national holiday

Ad hominem.
It was a question. I asked because people have often said "I'd like to see him dominate..." when talking about a lower level.

Why?

I definitely sense that those who wanted us to tank to get the first pick are disappointed that Slaf is not dominating the NHL yet, though most are not re-thinking the strategy of tanking to draft high, but simply wish lightning to strike again and have better luck next time.

It must be tough on people when they told their friends and family how great it would be to get the first pick, and danced a jig at the triumph of failure when we won the loser lottery, but reality does not match their dreams. So a good consolation prize is for their guy to "dominate" a lower level. "See how good he really is? I was RIGHT."

I'm not saying any of this applies to you, so I asked if you feelng better is the reason you want this guy to go back two levels.

Don't even answer me, but maybe just think about the whole picture and how you really feel about it.

Take care, champ.

Inspired by ExpatHab I created the following table:
View attachment 604584
I took all 1OA and 2OA forwards since 2000, got stats for their first 9 games they played at the age of 18 (some, like Malkin never played an NHL game at 18) and sorted them by Points per 60 minutes of gameplay.

Slaf fits squarely between Rick Nash and Ilya Kovalchuk. If he had one more point he'd be slightly better than Kovy and had he scored 1 less he'd still be better than Eichel.

Some things to note:
- if Slaf had one more point he'd be slightly better than Kovy and had he scored 1 less he'd still be better than Eichel.
- he's got way better +/- than other players. +/- 0 to MTL's is -6. Kakko was the worst performer who managed to accumulate -26 on NYR's +12 season.
- other player's high TOI also means they were deployed in offensive zone face offs with some of the team's best forwards. Slaf mostly gets defensive zone deployment and not quite the best team mates.
- Slaf's stats and performance are most similar to Steven Stamkos who had similar TOI, similar deployment and +/- but hat 2g 2a instead of Slaf's 3g 0a.

Thanks! Interesting to see AVG TOI of these players. I think it is important statistic.

Galchenyuk was not rushed. Suzuki was not rushed. Caufield was not rushed. All became NHL point producers.

Romanov was not rushed and became a useful NHL D.

The true narrative is not as one-sided as you just stated.

For sure, Mete, a physically weak 5'8" D picked 100th in the draft, was definitely rushed to the NHL at 19. This was clear and absolute insanity.

Kotkaniemi, who should have been a 10th-15th pick in a weak year, with deficiencies in balance, stamina and battling skills, was overdrafted and then overplayed, yes.

Slafkovsky is neither Mete nor KK. He does not have the glaring weaknesses the other two did.

Imagine a final between Slovakia and Canada. Slaf, Mesar, Dvorsky, Nemec vs Bedard, Fantilli, Wright ect, that would be sick to watch and possibly the most exciting hockey we could watch all year. I would sure cheer for Slovakia big time.

Fact, only good fowards on the team right now are staked on the top line and it doesnt look like Slaf will have an opportunity to play there with Dach doing great. The rest of the line-up is trash filled of bottom liners and washed up vets. Ive no doubt Slaf enjoy playing with the Habs, but Im pretty sure he is starting to get frustrated to play with untalented players. Sending him to the world would give him the opportunity to play on the top line with really good young players, let his skills and creativity operate without thinking too much and just have fun. Not sure he is having much fun to play with Armia and Evans right now.
Wow. The coaching staff that observes him every day must be noticing Slaf's slumping attitude and enthusiasm. Perhaps that is why the head coach called Slaf's progression "superb", just before they decided to keep him with this miserable bunch of losers beyond the 9 game trial. St-Louis was just trying to get the kid out of his depression, that's it!

:sarcasm:

I would bet the other guys played in the top 6 right away.

You don't have to take it seriously. It just shows how Slaf compares as an 18 year old. That is all.

Welp, he did pick Slaf all year long and got it right. He can brag about it all he wants.
I'm a fan of slaf but to say he's right after 9 nhl games is a bit premature, and a grown man bragging on Twitter is just cringy

I wouldn't say useless. Most of those guys are grade A studs. I'm actually surprised he's that high if that list is truly comprehensive. Which something tells me it's not.

But I do remember Galch and KK showing some good numbers for 18 y/o historically. So yeah it's all too early.

The good thing is he looks better to my eye than those 2 and showing more real potential. But the revisionism on KK is getting stupid on here. It's so frustrating how short our memories are on here a lot of the time. KK looked damn fine in that rookie year till he hit that wall. PERIOD. If there were critics at that point they were pretty damn quiet. People by and large were quite impressed.

The problem with both is their development went sideways. Whether that's the fault of the player or the org or that they just peaked early and it was out of anyone's control; is anyone's guess. But it's not like neither of them showed anything. It's BS to say they didn't.
At this point, KK is 13th in ppg from his draft year, so adding in a couple of D, would not have been out of place getting drafted 15th. The team that got him at 15OA would have chosen between him staying in Liga or moving him to the smaller ice in the AHL, and who knows if that would have changed anything today.

Very, very few 18 yo players have played in the top 6 right away. On average it has been third line.

In fact, even those who come up after they "dominate" the AHL start in the NHL on the bottom 6.

It's almost as if the NHL is a far superior league and guys have to, like, adjust to it.

Galchenyuk needed to work on his skating and defensive work and was instead rushed to the NHL where he never improved. The club didn’t make the same mistake with Suzuki and it is paying dividends now. They didn’t have the chance to rush Caufield, thankfully, but the previous administration did their best to try to ruin him too.

Kotkaniemi and Mete were both rushed with no consideration of their development.

Romanov was clearly not rushed, no need to bring him up, not Lehkonen… but both are limited offensively.

Developing playmaking ability is not this organization’s strong suit — and as we saw with Galchenyuk, Kotkaniemi, and Mete every player rushed in has stagnated big time. Hopefully this doesn’t happen with Slaf.

Nice, I didn't know Caufield played the drums.

For Slaf and the WJC I don't really have an opinion on whether he should or shouldn't, but it could definitely be a nice break and mental relief from the NHL he might or not need.

Like you said and i've said about a dozen times now, the Montreal Canadiens are running a business...and their business is not looking after the Slovakian National Junior Team.
