But if he does want to go, it's a great opportunity to build some trust and rapport with him, and a risk of doing the opposite if he's denied.

To reiterate something I posted earlier, I would not be shocked or disappointed to learn Slaf is being loaned to Slovakia.

However, this notion in the above quote must be a generational thing because I find it to be one of the most preposterous hockey-related concepts I have ever read in a hockey-related thread.

I’m not coming at you, Canadienna, your post has just kinda summed up quite a few other posts made over the last few days.

Can you describe what's wrong with it?

I don't even know what you disagree with.

Yes, exactly. If he tells them that he would really like to play at WJC (I don't know if he really wants), they might send him there. After all, it is in their best interests to keep him happy. And this season the loss of 2 weeks of Slaf in NHL will not make or break the team's overall season, so the downside is rather small.
Keep him happy?

What lol?
He is also a rather young human being, not a slave.
He’s making millions of dollars…what is the connection with him being a slave or not?

He’s a professional athlete contracted to an NHL team.
Nobody knows whether it would be better for his development, the level of competition is way lower compared to NHL. However, he would get more icetime and will have to handle high expectations. Plus enjoy himself with his buddies representing his home country and hopefully get more confidence.
This is not a reason to send him to the WJC. They’re not paying him to have fun with the Slovakian junior team.

Again, I am not saying 'Send him to WJC', I simply object to your 'it is obviously nonsense to send him there'. Let Slaf and the Habs decide.
It’s nonsense, in the current context.

If his playing time gets reduced, or if he gets sent down to Laval

Ok sure

But they’re not going to take him off an NHL roster so he can “go have fun with his countrymen”
I see it mostly about the goodwill: This is a very rare season when Slovakia has a good chance at WJC and as such it might mean something for him. The Habs telling him 'we own you, you are professional, it doesn't matter what you want' might not be the best course of action for them in the long term.
Goodwill has nothing to do with anything with all due respect.

The Montreal Canadiens are running a business, not a NPO.

Why are you quoting my post ? This answer has nothing to do with it. I was commenting on hockey's popularity in ex-Czechoslovakia, not whether he should go to the WJC or not. I don't mind either way.
I know you weren’t…I was trying to piggyback off your post to a parallel discussion.

My bad it came off like I was responding to you directly.

Pretty useless stat, as Daigle being at the top shows.

Wasn't there a similar stat for Kotkaniemi with respect to goals in his first x number of playoff games at one point?

I don't know about that. He seems to be the only outlier. In any case, what I gather from the chart is how hard it is to adapt even for phenoms at 18 years old. Lindros was a year older, he had already played for Team Canada the year before. Crosby, though, I actually forgot he had a bit of trouble scoring initially. And Crosby remains the best junior player I've ever watched.

As far as Slaf goes, he just keeps getting better and better every game. You have to wonder at what point he'll be given a shot with Monahan. Ideally, we'd have a good winger to give to him on the other side, but as long as it isn't Hoffdrounov, it can work.

exactly crosby had a little trouble scoring initially. and ovechkin didn't even make the list?

i think the first 9 games doesn't say much. But, I see a lot of potential in Slaf. But no guarantees that potential is actualized.

I’m not even sure what he’s trying to say? Slaf will be somewhere between Daigle and McDavid? Thanks for the wonderful insight you freaking idiot.
God I hate this guy, anything to push his agenda

Or he's saying exactly what he means to say when posting a grouping of players with stats. Here is added context, not a be all and end all of points. Try not to read too deep into to find a reason to get angry at Grant and turn it into a way to poop on Slaf.

I don’t need a reason to be angry at grant. And nowhere did I poop on Slaf. Learn to read.

He's just showing that draft year 1st overall don't score a lot of goals when they start right away in the NHL at 18 years old.

I wouldn't say useless. Most of those guys are grade A studs. I'm actually surprised he's that high if that list is truly comprehensive. Which something tells me it's not.

But I do remember Galch and KK showing some good numbers for 18 y/o historically. So yeah it's all too early.

The good thing is he looks better to my eye than those 2 and showing more real potential. But the revisionism on KK is getting stupid on here. It's so frustrating how short our memories are on here a lot of the time. KK looked damn fine in that rookie year till he hit that wall. PERIOD. If there were critics at that point they were pretty damn quiet. People by and large were quite impressed.

The problem with both is their development went sideways. Whether that's the fault of the player or the org or that they just peaked early and it was out of anyone's control; is anyone's guess. But it's not like neither of them showed anything. It's BS to say they didn't.

All we have to worry about is Slaf not continuing to improve. As long as he keeps doing that the kid will be a monster. At first I thought we got gypped getting a 1OA in a weak year. That's still possible but I'm starting to think this kid's going to be a proper star. Too much going for him and certain question marks seem to be being answered. All that's left is just an insane overall package that any team would kill for.

I mentioned it before, but to my eyes, KK always looked like he was treading water and just surviving out there, though his playmaking was keeping him up. It was the case with Slafs first few games, but not anymore and there are quite a few dimensions that KK still wasn't showing his third year here.

That’s why he showed Lindros, RNH, Daigle, MCDavid with 5 goals in 13 games or less? Slaf with 3 goals in 9 is doing great tbh, but it’s still too early to mean anything. Hopefully he moves up the lineup soon, I don’t like his deployment.

It's a pointless stat, is that better for you ?

So that he can dominate and you can feel better?
Imagine a final between Slovakia and Canada. Slaf, Mesar, Dvorsky, Nemec vs Bedard, Fantilli, Wright ect, that would be sick to watch and possibly the most exciting hockey we could watch all year. I would sure cheer for Slovakia big time.

Fact, only good fowards on the team right now are staked on the top line and it doesnt look like Slaf will have an opportunity to play there with Dach doing great. The rest of the line-up is trash filled of bottom liners and washed up vets. Ive no doubt Slaf enjoy playing with the Habs, but Im pretty sure he is starting to get frustrated to play with untalented players. Sending him to the world would give him the opportunity to play on the top line with really good young players, let his skills and creativity operate without thinking too much and just have fun. Not sure he is having much fun to play with Armia and Evans right now.

Correct, which is what I said.

But otherwise, wouldn't you find it a bit odd

Let's just hypothesize and say the WJC was next weekend.

You wouldn't find it a bit peculiar if Slafkovsky went to Kent Hughes and asked to be released to go play in the WJC? With the way he’s been playing and the role he has on the team?

I don't know man...I think some folks might be over playing this WJC experience.

Sure all kids dream of representing their countries at that tournament, but I doubt its at the expense of being NHL players lol.

The suggestion is even comical tbh
Pretty sure Slaf feel pretty good about is odds of being a NHL player, If he want to go to the WJC for 10 days, clearly he doesn’t see that it will be at the expense of being a NHL player…
