When interviewed for 98.5FM's "Les Amateurs de Sports", Hughes repeated exactly the same thing. He hasn't changed anything from his outlook and said they would figure out something to surround Slafkovsky properly in all facets of his development as an 18-year-old.

Hughes said that Matheson asked him what they intended to do with Slafkovsky (indirectly offering to take him in at home, I think), but Hughes said they would need to talk with the player to determine what would be best, considering that Slafkovsky has been living on his own since the tender age of 14 or 15. Hughes used his kids as an example, where they weren't too keen on the rules when they returned home after having lived on their own.

If they offer a foster home to Slafkovsky and he's on board with it, now that's a different matter altogether, but, having myself lived on my own from the tender age of 16, I don't know if I would have welcomed that with open arms?

Hughes also said they would surround Slafkovsky properly, whether it was in Montreal or Laval, feeling the need t protect their investment that has been instantly famous since the draft.

Wouldn't want Slafkovsky to cozy up to the Russian mafia like the Kostitsyns ;)
Didn’t know this. Makes me really respect Matheson. New player, doesn’t know anyone, but already has enough leadership and initiative to offer a place to the future star.

Or from Chicago’s perspective: cutting a bust loose before he loses more value.
Gamble on both sides. The habs gave up value n the expectation that Dach has more to show. Chicago may disagree or may just be dumping guys.

Some reports have Dach showing low compete level, not fighting for pucks. That’s not great. We’ll see if it pays off. Double gamble since Romanov’s upside is also unknown.

Like I said, the wide range of downsides to upsides outcomes when it comes to both Dach and Slaf makes me uneasy. They’re the only two players/moves I disagree with if only because of the uncertainty.

That Chicago gave up on Dach shouldn’t be discounted. He isn’t a guaranteed success but I hope MSL triggers a big change.

The Montreal fans will either make him or break him, he won't get away with mailing it in and not having to answer for it. He has a lot to prove and should see this as a fresh start and a chance to prove the Hawks wrong.

Wasn’t crazy about this move either, but I’ll concede the upside is high. Could look like a home run if Dach turns out. I think Romanov is a steep price to pay on a gamble.

He has a fat four year contract so there is very little downside for him

I wouldn't have given him more than 2 years at 2.5 per, a show me contract if you will. He has plenty to prove to himself and hab fans. The Hawks basically gave up on him and that should light a fire under him, it would be good to see him breakout with us and reach his potential.

He got four years and 3.5m so it indicates to us that Hughes sees very little downside in the guy who couldn’t produce even when playing shotgun next to Patrick fkn Kane.

May god bless us

Years ago, after hearing the Leafs Doug Gilmour would lose upwards of say 6 to 8lbs during the course of a hockey game. I thought I would try it and weighed myself before the game and after. I believe it was 1993, so I was around 23 yrs old. At the time I was in very good shape. I was 5'7 and weighed about 185lbs. My pregame weight was 184lbs, my post game weight was 177lbs. I know it was water weight that I loss, and the lbs came back in within a couple of days. But I was still blown away at how much I lost. In such a short period of time.
I'll see your 8 and raise you by..

Years ago when i was still capable of doing stupid things...i was in Greece and while the Greeks hid from 42C weather, i was going to go shop.

I was in a store and noticed that there was rivulet of sweat running down my arm and into my palms. Cool. About an hour into this brave Canadian bucking the heat, i was light headed from dehydration.

Made it home, drank 2 liters of water and lesson learned. I also learned the word...siesta.

I'm going to guess that i was down at least 10 lbs of water. And you it takes a day or two to get it back.

Oh I can believe it. Playing soccer I was in situations similar. But knowing this, constantly drank water, ate oranges. So I never suffered full dehydration.

What really impressed me with Gilmour. I did my test over 1 game. While Gilmour was doing this during the playoffs. Playing a game every 2nd night. Barely any time to comfortably put the weight back on.

He's 21 and developing, as well, he's had his wrist injury. Get over it already. You talk about all of the downside to Slaf and Dach.. and while they, and any prospect has downside, you need to remember that they are 18 and 21, neither of which are close to a finished product, and both of which have a high ceiling.

I’m less convinced about Dach’s ceiling than Slaf’s and I think Slaf’s has some limits, I don’t know if they will ever be the 1-2 punch on a team, but they can/may be important parts of the core.

Yes every young prospect has potential to succeed and potential to fail, it’s all about unrealized potential. Chicago thought there was less upside (or realizable upside) to keeping Dach than trading him for the 13OA.

Maybe the Habs will change the calculus — that’s pretty much what Hughes is betting on, anyway.

Weight fluctuations is a thing, yes.

It is not a 5%+ thing.

I weigh the same more or less than Slafkovsky and my weight fluctuates between 223-230 weekly, with most days being around 224-227.

He relaxed, he ate. Maybe he even partied a bit. Its fine.
You aren't a athlete dude and if you were some how some amateur athlete you are no where close to going through what Slaf is going through in terms of professional training and dieting.

I would guess he scores around 30 points season. Doesn't look like he's ready. I would consider half a year in Laval. Keep his rights a year longer
