The Blues don’t have alot of extra NHL quality (or near NHL quality) defensemen. Between the need for some seasoning, predictable eventual injuries and asset management, I think should Blues should Perunovich down. He won’t be there for long. Keep Mikkola and Walman with the team.

Eh. They should keep the best lineup. Perunovich has impressed enough and Mikkola and Walman have definitely had their chance to show what they can do. I trust the coaching staff, but they won't make decisions based on where people can play. They waived Walman last year, they'll waive him and/or Mikkola again if they don't make a good enough impression. I don't think Perunovich's waiver immunity will make their decision. If you really think "he won't be there for long," what's the difference?

A predictable, eventual injury to a defenseman (or two) and keeping organizational depth is the difference to me. Perhaps I am over cautious.

Every time I watch Mikkola I think Walman should make club. Then I watch Walman and think Mikkola should. Maybe just send them both down and find somebody else. And I don't mean find top pairing guy, I just mean find someone who isn't complete disaster to serve as our 6/7 D.

Berube on Neighbours tonight (from JR): "Same stuff I've been seeing all camp with him. He just is on the puck everywhere - makes little plays all over the ice. A very intelligent hockey player. He's got a nose for the puck. It's impressive. High-character guy. High hockey IQ."

One of the issues we had last year is we weren't hard enough to play against. Our Cup team was so physical, not easy opponent. Lat year- and injuries were part of it- but the character of the team, especially up front, was off. I like the forward group this year much better. We are much better equipped to play Blues hockey.

Yep. Way too easy to play against last year. Should be able to keep the puck in the O zone longer this year.
We will still get pinned in our own end though. I like walman better than mikkola because he can help keep sustained pressure in the o zone. Both have big weaknesses defensively. Positives ... Mikkola is longer. Walman can skate the puck out of trouble. No, neither is worthy of norris consideration.

I was looking forward to us keeping Tarasenko because it makes us so much more of a deep and dynamic team; I also believe he will rebound from the surgeries and get close to 30 goals again. Not so sure that happens with the Blues though, he doesn't seem to mesh all that well with any of our current lines. He is likely going to get Hoffman treatment where he is limited 5v5 and is looked upon to get PP goals.

Plenty to look forward to without him. This is what I want to see:

Neal-O'Reilly-Perron
Saad-Schenn-Buchnevich
Neighbours-Thomas-Kyrou
Barbashev-Bozak-Tarasenko

I doubt they actually put Tarasenko that far down in the lineup, and really I think the 3rd line there of the kids end up with the least amount of playing time as they will get o-zone starts and have short shifts.

With defense Perunovich had his moments and I think he will be great but he will spend time in AHL.

Krug-Faulk
Scandella-Parayko
Walman/Mikkola-Bortuzzo

Can't really complain about anything here, we have so much depth and plenty of young talent to get excited about.

Perunovich and Joshua assigned to Springfield.

Might be surprising but I’m sure they’ll both get the call up at some point if they play well down there.

I’m assuming this means Kostin made the team, since the others will require waivers.

Blues have some more cuts to make (even IF they send Neighbours to juniors). Why not make them now? I am curious if anyone will be traded or a trade is anticipated…

Neighbours, Clifford, MacEachern, Kostin and Brown remain, but only three spots…

Is there not a strategy to when you put guys in waivers? Could just be that.

Not necessarily. I'd imagine MacMac doesn't make it, but it will be interesting to see who the second guy sent down will be. I could see any of the other 4 make the team or not make the team...just depends what the coaches want I guess.

This may seem like sacrilege, but I am curious if Perunovich could not be a key piece in a big trade one day. He has got skill for days, but boy is he small. He could be quite the shiny object to land something significant down the road…

If Kostin didn’t make it, he likely would have been sent down along with those other guys today.

The reason they can’t announce anyone else being sent down is because they have to pass through waivers first.

I cannot imagine Logan Brown really “earned” a spot but is only still up because of the waiver concern.

Keeping Brown over Joshua sucks. But I guess they don’t want to risk losing him to waivers.

I am less confident that Neighbours stays if Brown sticks. Having a couple of unseasoned “projects” (not sure that applies to Neighbours — best word I could think of) tying up roster space seems problematic (or at least not customary on a “playoff” team).

Ah, I see what you mean. It's certainly possible, though it depends on if they have made up their mind who's made the team or not. Are there still practices and scrimmages scheduled this weekend? Berube talked about how the practice is just as if not more important than the games, so I wonder if they will make their final decisions this weekend.

Yeah, all he has said so far is the decisions will be made before the team leaves for their team bonding trip on Monday. So I would expect the roster to be finalized tomorrow.

Perunovich will really benefit from being the guy in the A for a little bit. There will inevitably be an injury and he’ll be right back, but he missed over a year of competition, so the AHL will be plenty challenging.

I’m lower than most on Joshua, so I’m good with him going down as well.

I can’t see anything else Perunovich could have done to make the roster. I guess they didn’t want to risk Walman or Mikkola to waivers. I think Perunovich is already better than either of those guys but it’s how the puck bounces.
