It's funny when Grönborg who was a very mediocre national team coach is miles better than what Garpen is. I am happy they lost to a team that tried to execute a gameplan and succeeded no matter if it's Denmark or Russia. If we miss QF maybe they will do something, but I doubt it.

It dawns on me more and more how utterly useless Garpenlöv is as a coach. I know Swedish hockey has a small tradition to find the worst coaches they can find (except for gems like Rönnberg, I like him), but the national team? Hardy, BÅG, Montén and now Garpenlöv. Utter garbage. But Garpenlöv takes the cake. He willingly destroys the only combinations he has that actually works, he just not traditionally useless at picking the players. What he favours in players I have no clue about, because he keeps clowns and sacks players that can actually fulfill a role.

For example, destroying the Skellefteå line was an idiotic move. Kind of like BÅG leaving Holmström out of the ordinary lineup in 2006 and picking Hanulla ahead of Hedström or even leaving Ronnie Sundin (or whatever his name was) ahead of a reputational NHL defenseman.

Second of all, putting Lundeström in a 1st line role. What the hell was he thinking? He's a fringe NHL player. He's young and not overly talented, 3rd or 4th line, fine, but this? What the... he's not exactly an Elias Pettersson or a Zibanejad, is he? Talented snipers with a mediocre NHL center, what did he think would happen?

As an example, why not play Nils Lundkvist with his teammate in Luleå Erik Gustafsson? They are a very good D pairing together and they have chemistry. Instead we get Tömmernäs looking like a moron beside him. Gustafsson is better than Tömmernäs, so what is the problem? What is Tömmernäs even doing on the roster and how the hell did he become the captain? And that's just the start of the Garpenlöv headaches.

This all starts with the coaching and team selection. It was a clown show before the tournament even begun. You could imagine the federation would wake up after losing against GERMANY in an important international game, but no. That whole old boy club has to be cleaned out.
1. I really don't see why people go crazy about Lundeström having been put there when the other options(on the registered roster) are Lindberg, Lindholm, Holmberg, & Rasmussen. They all smell lol, the fact Pär Lindholm is the best center on this Swedish roster just shows how utterly awful this team is down the middle. I mean, geeeeesh. At least Lundeström+Holmberg have potential to become better, that's the only good thing about the center lineup.

2. Gustafsson declined. If you want to throw shit at defenseman decisions then write about not inviting Brännström. But yeah no idea why Tommernäs is here and the captain BUT Lööv is way worse. Whoever called him a shutdown defenseman... What? Guy wouldn't be able to defend against Salming. At his current age that is.

1) It's of course not Lundeström's fault he was put in that situation to suck ass - and not be corrected, moved or benched when he utterly failed. He's a 21 year old fringe NHL player, anybody with a brain would know that wouldn't work. That's like putting a young Carl Hagelin in the role as the PP sniper. That's entirely on the management OF COURSE.

2) I didn't know Gustafsson declined, that's good to know and I can see why. That Brännström was declined is of course a joke, any sense of any talent - apart from Lundkvist - on the current garbage blueline would've been greatly appreciated. That I don't throw the manure catapult towards the utter bum in the form of Lööv doesn't mean I disagree with you whatsoever. I thought that was a given beyond discussion at this point that he shouldn't play another minute in this tournament. Even Hägg would've been an upgrade at this point and then you're in a VERY sorry state of affairs.

Basically any D-man apart from Lundkvist was garbage and he's 21 years old. It was only a question of shades of brown.

It not just the top guys....look at bottom lines, why going with 2 grinding lines?

we could had zaar - ryfors - emil pettersson, fröden - wingerli - berggren as out bottom 6 instead...its not like this guys dont work hard or anything.

Its very surprising that Sweden was unable to score a goal. Something like that happened only twice in the last 20 years. 0:0 vs Slovakia (2004), 0:3 vs Canada (2013) (group games)

In hindsight, we could've put Linda Bengtzing and Tomas Di Leva behind the bench and gotten the same results.

Garpenlöv gets lots of shit, and thats good. But we should never take away from him that he was a good player, he was gritty who played with lots of heart.

Gretzky was a horrible coach, but I hear he was a pretty decent player in his day. Yeah, no shade on Garpens player career. Who knows, he might even have a decent coaching career, he was just not ready to be the national team coach.

It does seem to be a coaching problem for sure, it's not the best Tre Kronor lineup ever that's for sure but there are enough quality players in the team that they should still be one the better teams in the tournament.

This team should have comfortably beaten both Denmark and Belarus..

It is partly the fact these top teams have their B, C or D teams and these countries like Belarus, Latvia and Kazakstan really have developed and they have teams full of KHL players now. But yes, Sweden should have won these matches just like Finland should have beaten Kazakstan and Canada should have beaten Latvia.

I still wouldn't count Sweden completely out though they've had two of these embarassing losses now, they have started poorly in some previous tournaments just to start playing when it matters and gone all the way to gold..
Speaking as a Finn who has no reason to cheer for Sweden though I do love them dearly as rival. :)
