Didn't see the game, but based on the comments not so great? I am not in Larionov's camp, but will support whatever roster and the coach we field any day.

They were ok, against a very strong team. If they had converted on a couple of chances they would've won.

As for the Neutral zone regroup. Back when it first came(or returned to, old time hockey in the teens and 20's had some of that style) to NA in the 70's it blew the Canadian's minds, and they didn't know how to react to it. It was a big advantage for the Soviets at the time. It is no longer an unknown tactic that NA teams are unfamiliar with. The Cup winning Red Wings team played that puck possession game, as did the Canucks a little bit later. Many teams use it to a greater or lesser degree, but it is certainly not a tactic that will confuse opponents like it did all those years ago.

Let’s be honest there, Askarov is not stopping that wrister from Drysdale. Other than that, the backup goalie was just fine and he wasn’t tested much
My thoughts exactly. Obviously not tested enough to get a great gauge but thought he did just fine.

The only danger for Canada as I see it, is that Askarov could get into their heads when they hit the championship round. In a 'one and done' playoff game, sometimes the goalie can flat out steal one.

This Russian team is such a contrast with what's coming next year. So much star power coming up among younger players.

But this roster could still do well. They'll just need to grind it out and play smart. Askarov will have to steal one or two.

do I have the lines wrong?

#27 Rodion Amirov#22 Marat Khusnutdinov#19 Vasili Podkolzin
#8 Arseni Gritsyuk#24 Ilya Safonov#10 Vladislav Firstov
#23 Yegor Afanasyev#13 Vasili Ponomaryov#28 Maxim Groshev
#11 Zakhar Bardakov#18 Yegor Spiridinov#21 Yegor Chinakhov

Yep, Chinakhov is the 2nd line RW.

There is the official FHR tweet.

Offense was not really clicking to expected standards, but overall very professional looking performance by team Russia. Askarov kinda scares me though.

I agree with what Atas said in the game thread. Podkolzin and Amirov doesn't work, was a stupid idea to begin with and should be broken up.

I still think that with a different center connecting them it might work. Maybe Ponomaryov, since Larionov doesn't like Abramov for some reason.

Hard hitting for sure.

Not only that, didn't notice a single error from him on the D, also was supporting the attack pretty well.

Those moves he put on when one of the forwards got crease violation... I was shocked it was him, like what the hell... Maybe there is a clip of that somewhere?

Didn't find the clip, but I understand what you're talking about. Shouldn't be exactly shocked though, as both in juniors and on U18 NT he was pretty active at supporting the attack, it's just the KHL where he doesn't do that, at least for now.

Why isn't Mukhamadullin playing on the PP? He thrived there playing in KHL early in the season

I was excited to get to finally get to watch Askerov play a full game for the first time. I know it’s one game and that’s nothing to overreact about, but for as much hype as Askerov has, I was very disappointed.

He didn't really thrive, SYu were just really short of any kind of other options. Having said that, at WJC he could definitely do the job so I think the main reasons are those two: 1) other options (Chayka and Knyazev) aren't significantly worse; 2) coaches would rather see Mukhamadullin playing 5v5 so it makes sense to give him rest during the PPs. Those two kind of mold into one: not playing him on PP is a cost-effective way to limit his workload.
