Wheeler's list has some big variances with others, which makes this draft all the more interesting. He has some guys others list as first rounders as in the 20's. It gives me hope we can find a Jason Roberston/Roope Hintz type player in round 2, and pick 46.

My prediction? Whoever we pick will generate discussion here.

It’ll be the typical HF thing where no one has a clue who we drafted but we act like we do and just fire off hot sports opinions.

What do you mean I watched 10 minute YouTube clips on these kids, I am a pro scout.

Kent Johnson at #2 is insane, but I love it. He's either gonna be diet-Barzal if his skating improves, or some kind of super Ho-Sang.

I think if the analysts doing these rankings couldn’t see each others rankings , they would probably all be much different .

I'll definitely never pretend I know a damn thing about specific prospects year to year. That being said, between results in hindsight and obvious things, like foolishly drafting for 'size' and 'character' and 'grit' or whatever, you can easily infer the kind of player the Stars have liked to draft and criticize the philosophy of it. I think the last couple of drafts have given us all hope that those tendencies have changed, but I guess that will all get worked out in whether the players we draft will have better impact than before. For me, it has always come down to the idea that, obviously, drafting well in the NHL is hard, but what isn't hard is deciding to draft players because they are good at hockey, and not because they are 6'7" like Curtis Douglas or 6'3" like Albin Eriksson, to add to the Riley Tufte jokes above.

Also, just drafting very conservatively in general. Did we really need to draft Rhett Gardner as a 20 year old knowing he might end up as a 4th line grinder? What is even the point of drafting someone with that kind of profile? You can sign them in free agency for the same as an ELC or close, so why waste a draft pick on it? I'll happily take the long shot on a guy with some standout skill that they can develop around than another grinder. I'm happy to take a 1% stab at real talent, as opposed to getting a 50% chance of acquiring a 4th line grinder. I totally get why you find the complaining exhausting, just trying to explain my takeaways from draft day over Jim Nill's stint as GM, even as someone who is ignorant of specific players we should be picking.

If there’s anyone here who knows anything about the Robidas kid, lemme know. I’m all in on him in the 2nd just because he’s Stephane’s son.

Edit: here’s a video!!

Another edit because I’m avoiding watching Tampa win this game: Here’s Pronman’s write up from the Athletic:
38. Justin Robidas, C, Val-d’Or-QMJHL
March 13, 2003 | 5-foot-8 | 173 pounds
Skating: High-end
Puck Skills: Below-average
Hockey Sense: Average
Compete: Above-average
Robidas was an important player on a great junior team this season. Robidas plays the game with a lot of speed and energy which is why despite being 5-foot-8, I think his game could translate to higher levels. He’s a great skater, who often takes pucks up the ice with speed and charges right for the net. Off the puck, he hustles to win battles and can kill penalties. Robidas shows good instincts as a playmaker, and flashes of good puck skills but I wouldn’t call his puck game what gets him to the NHL. In a sentence, Robidas projects as a middle-six NHL forward, likely on the wing, who will be a fan and coach favorite due to his speed and work ethic.

Just saw that Sami Helenius’ kid is in the draft this year as well. 6’6 center, projected 2nd-3rd round. If the chips fall right, Dallas could get two legacy picks in one draft if they so choose.

Pronman basically ranked him as the slowest skater in the draft. But he’s big so it’s possible he’s drafted by us. I hated when his dad played for the team but I was only like 14 lol

Just reading through Pronman's top 151 article on the Athletic. Below average article, and this take kinda annoyed me due to how common and misinformed it is...

Lambos had a tough season between a mediocre performance in Finland and medical issues ending his WHL season early.

He's not the only one to spread this narrative of Lambos struggling in Finland. Regardless of who is saying it, it seems questionable.

When Lambos was loaned to the JYP program he went straight to their junior ranks. Scored 3 points in 2 games at the U18 level and 11 points in 13 games with a +9 at the under 20 level. He then got a call-up but only played a grand total of 14:22 across 2 Liiga games before the WHL season started back up.

How do you make a blanket statement like "mediocre in Finland" when he was ultra productive for more than 95% of his ice-time there and good enough to earn a Liiga call-up? The Finnish under 20 league isn't that strong, you'd expect him to dominate and he did. I didn't watch those 14 Liiga minutes, but seriously? How bad could 14 minutes of hockey have possible been to justify this "Struggled in Finland" narrative that is going around the draft community.

Damn, a 17 year old kid goes across the world to a pro-league in another country and doesn't perform instantly. Shocker.

Its not relevant to Dallas as we wont be anywhere near him, but Edvinsson would be the player id want from this draft if i was GM.

Id take him pick 1.
