The only veterans Briere kept were TK, Laughton and Seeler. Added Hathaway and Johnson.
Inherited Couts, DeLo and Risto's contracts and Sanheim's extension
DeLo and Johnson are buried, and soon gone.
Laughton and Risto are a good bet to be gone before the draft.

Laughton probably should have been dealt last summer, but they didn't know if Cates could play center, Rizzo was a year or two away and nothing else in LHV.

So TK, Seeler and Hathaway.

It's doubtful anything they got for TK last summer would equal his current value as a top 1st line RW, a late 1st, 2nd and "B" prospect (see Meier). They're lucky to have kept both him and Sanheim.

Seeler might have gotten you a late 3rd. He's the best partner for Drysdale, if that helps Drysdale develop, it's worth at least as much. Term is too long, but there will be buyers in a year.

Hathaway would have gotten maybe a 4th, 4th line forwards just don't garner much.
They extended him b/c last summer they didn't have anyone in the organization they saw as a year away to replace him. Better to have a kid beat him out in a year or two than a gaping hole.

I'm less worried about strategy than implementation. Don't care if they don't tank.
As long as Briere refrains from spending real assets (big long-term contract or top picks/prospects) on veterans, I'm fine.

It's really not all that difficult to see that Briere and the entire Flyers organization is a complete screw up. Starting at the top with their absurd front office triumvirate. Which has resulted in Tortorella being the guy who is really in charge.

I think Chicago is overworking Bedard playing him 19 minutes a game and setting him up for injury. When you're rebuilding why ride a star prospect into the ground?

This is the last 20 or so games last season redux.

Yes, they make too many mistakes, but that's due to both inexperience and Tort's NOT being a defensive coach, he's encouraging them to take risks this season, a lot more cross ice passes. Learn to walk (last season) then run, but they're stumbling a lot.

Briere will make moves, but there's zero reason for him to rush into deals, with these goaltenders, the playoffs are unreachable. That was always the issue - and it's obvious the Hart thing completely blindsided them - they were hoping to work in Ersson over a couple season, not rush him as a starter.

So why not go get a veteran goaltender - they have the assets to get an average one - maybe give up a 2nd and 3rd - because they're rebuilding, trading assets to finish with 85-90 points instead of 75-80 points doesn't really make sense.

But trading assets for Eric Johnson does make sense?

At the time he was a salary dump, 3rd pair veteran coming off a knee injury and a pending UFA.
Flyers were pleasantly surprised when he and Seeler hit if off and put up great metrics.
But it was a good gamble, at worst he's a 15 minute guy you let walk at the end of the season.

Even by your own account, that's a serviceable veteran. You weren't asking for a top four replacement.

I know you put the "salary dump" caveat in there that I didn't include in the quote, but that's because it's purely your assessment. I just quoted the factual part of what you said in that sentence. If he really was a pure salary dump, then the estimation of how well Briere made out in the Provorov trade sinks as he was taking two salary dumps on.

I will also say, following the Walker trade, this was your assessment of him:

When they traded Walker, they were sorta giving up on the season, you don't trade your top D-man if you're serious about a PO run.

So I think it's fair to say they got a serviceable defenseman in the Provorov trade, even if your estimations of him at the time of acquiring was too low and at your time of selling was too high.
