A McTavish/Raymond line would be an incredible sight if players didn't have to wear helmets

Someone get on the phone with Eichel's agent. Introducing your 2023-24 Detroit Red Wings First Line...

two things i dont doubt happen on '' the draft floor '' (virtual of course) :
- we trade up from the 22nd into mid teens to get a player were super high on
- we trade vrana for another 1st because a center or dman pops up on the radar were high on

exactly . its a HUGE sleeper draft . theres gems out there nobody knows about except ' the bc sage '

Stop calling it a sleeper draft. It's an unknown draft. There are going to be picks that end up "sleepers", sure, but there will be plenty of picks that head the opposite direction because the lack of viewings, viewing quality, missed seasons, etc.

Scouts and teams aren't excited about this draft...they are nervous about it. That's why teams were pushing for the draft date to be pushed back.

I doubt both of those things happening very much, actually.

No, it's a huge crapshoot. Someone is going to hit the jackpot with a later pick. Many with high picks are going to swing and miss.

My nostradamus-like prediction is that 7 of the 10 top 10 picks will meet or exceed expectations.

I think we're going to see more disappointments between 11 and 20 than 21 to 32.

Well, I think we already see a decent amount of disappointments there in a normal draft. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the guys up near the top get taken because they've played more and teams feel they have more a book on them... and they'll end up being Riley Sheahan level.

I think it'll be more like the 2005 draft where a guy like Abdelkader will wind up having a longer career than 6 out of the first 10 picks, and the very last pick winds up better than a vast majority of the prospects, lol. No Crosby in this draft but I wouldn't be surprised if there's a couple of Kopitar/Niskanen level player somewhere in the first round.

That draft was so weak, Helm would be a first rounder in a re-draft. I don't expect this one to be quite that weak but at the same time I think the successful players will be scattered in every round instead of concentrated at the top.

Now THAT is a super spicy take. I remember Sheahan as a prospect at Notre Dame during his draft year and stared blankly at the computer for a minute after finding out we picked him.

Sheahan should have been a 2nd rounder but Holland and Babcock were looking for a big heavy defensive type. He wasn't expected to be more than a 3rd liner when we picked him and that's what he became.

The only one in the top 10 that people talk about as having limited offensive potential is Edvinsson but he also projects as a top 4 defensive defenseman.

Leave it to a UM fan to create another rivalry with a little brother. :D

I mean, it wasn't exactly wrong. MSU WAS Michigan's little brother. But they were the little brother who grew up pissed off about being the little brother.

Also, I love this Pure Michigan

i need a term to describe the type mind needed by a succesful hockey player because it isnt high iq . a player can be real dumb but think very quickly while being very aware of whats going on around him . could you just say ' quick thinker with excellent peripheral vision ' ?

A player who is able to diagnose situations quickly, have a presence of mind to know what is happening around him, and presumably make the right play...

That is what a high IQ player is. High IQ is high hockey IQ...not their SAT scores and high school GPA

Situational awareness maybe?
thanx . thats a good term , its the guys that can grasp more of whats happening on the rink that figure out the ways to succeed . the quickness of thought and reaction on nhl rinks is mind boggling to me . not on solid ground but rather slippery ice on thin blades trying to control a small puck with a 6' long stick while moving fast and avoiding opponants and boards , fighter pilot level quickness of thought . under those conditions it dont matter how fast you can skate or hard you can shoot , you need the high level of situational awareness / survival instincts or your not going to thrive n survive

For sure, I think that situational awareness also includes prediction/projection which is very important with how fast hockey has become. You have to get ahead of the play, reaction means you're chasing.
