Seattle takes Dunn. Then trades Dunn and *something they gained during the ED* back to STL for Tarasenko w/ $1.6M/yr retained. Seattle then flips Tarasenko for something really nice (either before the season starts or at the TDL), that Army couldn't accomplish himself while saving Dunn in the process.

That’s not allowed per the league rules regarding expansion I believe.

i think they take dunn tbh over tarasenko. stupid to expose him and not krug if they want to shed cap space. if you expose krug and tarasenko, you pretty much guarantee atleast 6.5m in cap relief.

The Blues are going to dump assets to entice Seattle to take him that they will woefully regret and then massively overpay Hyman or Landeskog or lose Dunn then trade Tarasenko for a crap return. Why would they ever do something smart like this suggestion?

The unprotected group of players from the Blues is underwhelming to say the least. Can’t imagine they take anyone other than Dunn, with the outside shot they bite on Tarasenko.

What assets do the Blues even have to give away that they would woefully regret?

16th, Neighbours, Perunovich, Future 1sts, Kostin

Not saying all of them will work out but a team on the decline shouldn’t be giving away these assets or throwing away 24 year old defenseman with strong underlying metrics.

I'm suprised Tarasenko was exposed. This pretty much means that the relationship is...ummm....divorce level.

I thought that he would go in a trade before the XD. That he didn't is very interesting.

If you are wondering about Price, he volunteered to save Allen. Nobody expects that the Kraken will take an average season goalie for 10.5 million. Price is now more of a one trick playoff pony. His NMC also crushes any hope the Kraken can trade him to a contender.
I think that’s wishful thinking to assume Price wouldn’t waive to go to a contender. There would be tremendous pressure in him to do so, and why wouldn’t he want a chance to win a Cup? If Seattle retains salary, they can make Price into a valuable asset. I don’t know their plans, or if they’ll draft him, but I think it’s feasible. It really just depends how many real dollars they are willing to spend, and where they plan to allocate their cap.

It’s similar with Tarasenko. They may draft him, allow him to play and improve his stock, then trade him with retention as a valuable asset. The Price move is much riskier, but it would help create a team identity for Seattle almost immediately, and sell a heck of a lot of merchandise and jerseys.

Please take Tarasenko

I agree. If they pick Dunn we will lose Dunn AND still have a player who doesn't want to be here and who's value has tanked (no pun intended).

It's better if Seattle takes Tarasenko and we can still get something in return for Dunn.

I just hope Army isn't going to try to trade Seattle (an) asset(s) to pick Tarasenko...

This would be especially painful if Tarasenko returns to his 30+ goals form and Seattle trades him at the deadline for a big haul.

I don’t see us paying Krakens to take or avoid specific player. That isn’t Army’s style.

Why the Leafs exposed Alex Kerfoot and Jared McCann to Seattle in the expansion draft - The Athletic

As expected, Kyle Dubas’ Leafs protected eight skaters and one goaltender. Justin Holl was protected while both Alex Kerfoot and the newly acquired Jared McCann were exposed to the Kraken.

The Leafs knew coming in they were bound to lose Kerfoot and decided to prepare themselves for that inevitability by dealing for insurance in McCann. Now, they leave it up to Seattle GM Ron Francis to decide if Kerfoot is still his guy or whether he prefers the younger McCann instead.

Either way, the Leafs will have as many useful forwards on the roster as they did prior to the weekend.

Francis might have come away with players both had the Leafs not nabbed McCann away from the Penguins on Saturday.

Is it possible the Leafs will work out a side trade with Seattle to ensure that Kerfoot is their pick? Maybe, though increasingly it seems unlikely. The Kraken have set a very high price in trades of that kind.

Rather, it sounds like the Leafs are comfortable, now that they have McCann, living with whatever Francis decides.

If Seattle takes Kerfoot, then the Leafs have insured themselves with McCann, who could be their third-line centre next season. If Francis opts for McCann, the Leafs still have Kerfoot (though I’d argue he belongs on the wing moving forward and at centre only in the case of injury).

It may seem odd to trade for McCann, only to then leave him exposed. But it’s not as if the Leafs paid a high price to acquire him.

The cost: A pick in the last round of the draft two years from now (2023) and Filip Hållander, who was unlikely to play for the Leafs next year and probably maxes out as a third liner in the NHL.

While there was some thought that maybe McCann’s acquisition would lead the Leafs to the 7-3-1 protection model, in the end, Holl’s value won out. The front office knew it wouldn’t have been possible to find a 20-minute-a-night No. 4 defenceman making $2 million or less if Holl was exposed and claimed by Seattle.

David Savard and Alec Martinez, for instance, will likely draw double that price in free agency later this month.

Does Jake Muzzin make Holl better, helping him survive against the toughest competition in the league? Absolutely. That’s part of why the Leafs pay Muzzin what they do. But it’s not as if they could stick anyone in that spot and expect similar results.

I really hope you're right. We live in a weird world now, the flatcap has changed a lot of things and teams might want to pay more than they were comfortable with first to gain capspace. We've been rumored to be interested in Landeskog, Hyman, Suter, Yandle (so I imagine we will at least try to add a top 6 LW and top 4 LHD either by free agency or trade) while it's reported we also haven't given up on resigning Hoffman, Schwartz and Bozak if they fit under the cap. Army might need Tank's caphit to do so.

Seattle has all other teams, except Vegas, by the balls. They will get more assets then Vegas did and like Vegas might be competative from the start. They probably already have a deal with the Leafs as it's otherwise not logical to trade for McCann and then leave him unprotected.

As expected, the toughest places to fill are top 4 D and C, but there's some decent options.

No real surprises obviously, but there it is.

I'm still just flabbergasted that we didn't trade or protect Tarasenko. It blows my mind that a guy that the guy that was the face of our franchise around the league a few years ago is going to gone for nothing. It might be the right move in the end, although I doubt it. Even if I understand why, I still just cannot wrap my head around it.
