Colt is a 28 year old 6’6 defensemen with a nagging back thing and a game that depends on speed, who hasn’t performed like a top flight shutdown player in 2 seasons.

There is a pretty good chance what we saw late last year is “a healthy Parayko” going forward.

The Blues are in trouble on defence even if Parayko comes back to his 3 years ago form. If the statement above comes true, The Blues are in big trouble. And losing Tarasenko, and signing Landeskog with the resulting Cap room won't help the defensive problems. They'll need to trade for or sign a very solid experienced defenceman, and won't have enough cap to do that. I think there are a few teams that might want to add Krug's offence, but certainly not at his current contract's cost. Armstrong is going to have to work another miracle like The O'Reilly trade, to keep The Blues from needing to overhaul the roster, and keep from suffering 2-3 bad losing years.

If there really was interest from 4 teams I can't help but feel like Armstrong is trying to be way too cute. I feel like Seattle will still take Dunn, but it's really wierd regardless. Is there more/better interest for Barbashev somehow?

I read it as:
The offers for Tarasenko from teams on his accepted list all require salary coming back or requires retention that is not attractive. Seattle certainly won’t be on the trade list. Losing him and his full cap hit (and salary) is more attractive than the best offer so far, if you factor in being able to spend the salary on Suter, Landeskog, etc.

The thing that puzzled me is: will Seattle take him? I think probably they will. If Vlad has a decent bounce back season, he’s a pretty attractive trade chip they can get very nice vale for. And in the meantime he’s a marketing bonus for a team that doesn’t yet have an identity.

I won’t be shocked if they take Dunn, but Tarasenko is an interesting choice from an investment point of view.

it also makes one think Armstrong has some optimism about signing Landeskog, Suter type players.

Only reason I can think of Tarasenko being exposed is one that’s already been mentioned: the return for him doesn’t outweigh the potential cap relief that Seattle could give by selecting him. Otherwise, this just nukes his value more as I don’t see him playing another game with the Note.

Bergevin’s insane to protect Allen.

The Blues won’t be protecting a single player that was protected in 2017.

That’s pretty wild. Wonder how many teams can say that.
Toronto will only have one or two. Rielly and Andersen. Wild also would only have one with Spurgeon. There are several others with only one but idk if anyone else will be none.

To top things off, Price played his Junior hockey in Washington. Just imagine the jersey sales off Price to the Kraken.

Like, I’m legit stunned they left him exposed. The Tarasenko thing was frustrating, but if the Kraken take Price Montreal might form a lynch mob.

Yes, but in the near-term I view Krug as a solution to the Blues problems for the next 2-3 seasons before he’s an issue. And moving on from him until another D is identified would not be wise IMO.
Francis was quoted as wanting to save as much cap space as possible.

Plus, there will be a lot really good defensemen available. So Krug won't be a standout. He's also 30 and signed long-term. Dunn is 6 years younger and cost controlled (will certainly not cost 6.5M annually), so it's a different case.

Acquiring high end forward talent will be much harder, so it makes more sense they take Vladdy over Krug. They could even just trade Vladdy to an interested team.

I follow, I’m just saying while I’m not a fan of Krug’s contract, I think some massively downplay his contributions in the near term. Find him a proper partner and have a healthy Parayko and I think things are OK.

And I agree, I think Tarasenko’s likely going to Seattle unless they take Dunn. Situation seems impossible to salvage at this point and I don’t think there’s much blame to place on Armstrong for that. It’s unfortunate, but it is what it is. I’d rather get immediate cap relief than a crap return with salary coming back.

We’ll have enough cap to upgrade the defense, especially if we lose Tarasenko to SEA.

It would set up NOT trading Vlad in preparation for training camp. You go back to him and say, “We tried” but your value was demonstrably not good. We believe in you, and if you can show your value around the league we will keep trying.

But if I’m Seattle, I gamble on getting good value for Tarasenko in a year or even at the deadline. The fact Tarasenko is only a 2y contract makes that gamble worth taking in my view.
