So many prospects over the Nash years were ecstatic that Rick Nash took the time of the day to greet them and introduce himself like he's their neighbor. If I recall who was it that we were joking about being in Montreal now but said in a podcast that Eichel didn't do what Crosby would do to welcome every guy into the room? Glad to see Kreids step up.
With how badly overpaid he is, maybe appearance fees was included in that salary

This is how you ruin a prospect. His offensive upside is there. He has a high end shot with decent speed for his size as well as the IQ. What’s the point even in starting him at 4C? Because you already know he doesn’t have offensive upside? Why not just start Rooney there who has been solid and let Barron be Hartford’s 1C so he can work on his offense more? He’s going to be playing with Reaves half the year if he starts 4C. I never liked Howden but it was common sense to start him in the AHL, but instead we may have stifled his offensive game/confidence by playing 4C, and 4C only with scrubs. Exact same thing with Lias. Barron put up PPG as a rookie playing C down there.
We should be trying to get actual offense out of every line along with competent defense. If we can roll 4 competent lines bc we have guys like Barron in the bottom 6 then that's great.

There is zero reason to rush Cuylle, Othmann, etc. We have quality forward depth for the foreseeable future. And to me that is at bare minimum the next 2 years. Let these kids develop properly at an appropriate pace. We rushed Howden, Lias, and Chytil, and it really didn’t do them any good. Let them marinate.
This. Let Cuylle work on his two way game. He couldn't find the defensive zone with a map in Hartford.

Let Othmann be "the man" on a young Flint Firebirds team. If we're lucky, he breaks Canada's WJC camp and plays in late December and early January in the WJC's.

Zero reason to rush these guys.

Cuylle had some nice moments in the AHL last year but otherwise looked like a fringe player. Unless he's taken some massive steps forward I can't imagine him being ready for the NHL.

Dev camp is a great experience for all the guys. Standing out doesn't necessarily mean anything. Like standing out at Traverse. Obviously you want to see guys stand out against their peers, but doing so doesn't predict any amount of future success.

I like Cuylle but he's a few years away, IMO.

This is it right here.

We obviously have no idea how he or his game has grown in the summer and won't until we get eyes on him playing in games but the likelihood that he went from meh in the AHL-lite to NHL ready in a few months is very, very low.

Plus we're in a spot where Barron, who crushed the same AHL-lite league last year and looked okay at the NHL level during his call up may not even have a spot on this roster. Cuylle is going to have to do some crazy shit at camp/pre season to even be in consideration. I'm rooting for him to do it, but if he doesn't thats fine with me as well. We can still use a guy with his skill set 2-3-4 years down the line.

These are two guys who can be that energy boost playing on ELCs for the 23-24 season as we turnover some of the roster. That’s what successful teams do in the cap era. Tampa has done it. Chicago did it. LAK and PIT did to an extent. But Tampa has been the best at it. You need to have cheap talent flowing into your roster on the bottom 6. There is no need to rush them. They can assimilate in smoothly, while learning from the veterans on the team in the coming camps of what it takes to get to this level and stay here.

Cuylle and Othmann are the only ones with slide-eligible ELCs so they could just keep them around for a week or 2, have them tag along, play a few games for the experience before returning to the OHL

Not saying they have to, but the ELC slide does give them that flexibility.

I think a couple of seasons ago this would have been more realistic. But with a new GM and new coach and (presumably) more of an urgency from ownership to win, I would think they'd ice the absolute best roster they could and not play guys who don't yet belong just for experience. But who knows.

Obviously it’s a one-off drill, but I’m lol’ing at how badly Othmann cooked Cuylle there

Saw a nice video of Nils on FB (can't embed) on some 3 on 3 drills. He takes the puck around the net on his backhand, sharp stop to switch to forehand, passes it off, eventually gets the puck back in stride, fakes slapper only to pass it off and seems to start skating towards the other side of the blue in a puck possession type of rotation, but apparently that was a fake out as he gets the puck right back in the spot he was when he passed it off for quick one time goal.

He's quick on his skates and makes fast decisions with the puck, he looks like he's got a plan throughout the whole video.

Barron was a winger in college, why are we assuming he has this untapped offensive upside, at center, no less?

He’s a nice prospect, but if I’m remembering the reviews from our resident Cornell watcher, @coz21, correctly, his upside is Brian Boyle.
which would be an absolute boon for us.

not every useful player has to score 100 points
