just so we’re clear, I’m not disagreeing with the general point of this statement, or even the specifics about Perfetti.
His entry and exit numbers in the scrimmages notwithstanding, I can’t be the only one who noticed how often those entries died once he got into the zone? Or how ineffective he was in the offensive zone when the puck was not on his stick?
Could have been a linemate issue, but he’s an offensive player who will have to make the team in an offensive role, and he didn’t create scoring chances.
We’ve also got guys like Cozens and Dach and Byrum to lead the transition game. I’m a Perfetti fan and had him pencilled in on my team pre-camp, but he needs to show something else too.
Perfetti is the highest scoring player from last year in the camp (111points), was OHL MVP runner up and his history of excellence with HC (U17's and Hlinka) I would think that would have to be more important than an average performance in two scrimmages after an 8 month lay off. Also, I think though he was not good in the first half of scrimmage one, he got better each period after that and was one of the red teams best players in game two, which you like to see after a long layoff. Line mates and chemistry also plays a huge part in a short camp and why some players may look better in such a short timeframe. I do think he needs to continue to be better in the coming scrimmages and he is not a lock but he is in the list of players likely to make it.. The locks up front in my opinion are: Dach, Cozens, McMichael, Byfield, Mercer. after that the likely to make it are: Krebs, Newhook,Perfetti, Tomasino, Holloway and them there 6-8 players vying for the last 4 spots.
My question is, Byfield was at best average in camp so far, his history with HC has been lacklustre (U17, Hlinka and WJC), but he gets the easy pass every time. So which is it? Is body of work important or not? Is camp performance the biggest factor? Is potential the biggest factor?
