just so we’re clear, I’m not disagreeing with the general point of this statement, or even the specifics about Perfetti.

His entry and exit numbers in the scrimmages notwithstanding, I can’t be the only one who noticed how often those entries died once he got into the zone? Or how ineffective he was in the offensive zone when the puck was not on his stick?

Could have been a linemate issue, but he’s an offensive player who will have to make the team in an offensive role, and he didn’t create scoring chances.

We’ve also got guys like Cozens and Dach and Byrum to lead the transition game. I’m a Perfetti fan and had him pencilled in on my team pre-camp, but he needs to show something else too.

Perfetti is the highest scoring player from last year in the camp (111points), was OHL MVP runner up and his history of excellence with HC (U17's and Hlinka) I would think that would have to be more important than an average performance in two scrimmages after an 8 month lay off. Also, I think though he was not good in the first half of scrimmage one, he got better each period after that and was one of the red teams best players in game two, which you like to see after a long layoff. Line mates and chemistry also plays a huge part in a short camp and why some players may look better in such a short timeframe. I do think he needs to continue to be better in the coming scrimmages and he is not a lock but he is in the list of players likely to make it.. The locks up front in my opinion are: Dach, Cozens, McMichael, Byfield, Mercer. after that the likely to make it are: Krebs, Newhook,Perfetti, Tomasino, Holloway and them there 6-8 players vying for the last 4 spots.

My question is, Byfield was at best average in camp so far, his history with HC has been lacklustre (U17, Hlinka and WJC), but he gets the easy pass every time. So which is it? Is body of work important or not? Is camp performance the biggest factor? Is potential the biggest factor?

Glad to see none of the 5 guys who will miss the tournament because of protocols are important players. I didn't even have Robertson on my team so it doesn't affect the team for me which is lucky. Could have been a lot worse. I hope those who had/has covid get healthy and all 5 aren't too upset at missing the tournament for these kind of reasons. I know it must feel awful.

So many good players up front. Some really tough decisions ahead

McMichael - Dach - Cozens
Newhook - Byfield - Mercer
Perfetti - Krebs - Tomasino
Holloway - Rees - Quinn

Byram - Drysdale
Harley - Schneider
Guhle - Korczak
Barron, O'Rourke

Garand

With Zary, Pelletier, Jarvis, Poulin, Wright and Suzuki fighting for the last forward spots. I literally can't make up my mind.

Quick question, in normal years when teams have 2 extra skaters they're allowed to roster all 20 skaters for every game. With teams allowed 22 skaters now are they still allowed to roster everyone for every game or do 2-4 guys have to sit in the press box?

Teams are allowed to dress 13 F's, 7 D and 2 goalies. Which means you will have 1 F, 1D and 1G in the press box each game with the roster of 25.

I keep wondering about Byfield, too. We know he has the potential, but I feel that I’ve seen him be underwhelming an awful lot. If we go on camp performance alone he would definitely be a cut. Then we go over to the Team Finland thread and people are justifying not even inviting the team’s second leading scorer from last year to camp with a simple “What have you done for me lately?”. Like WTF?!:laugh::laugh:

Bobby Mac has Perfetti listed as a lock, so there's that. It should also go on record how clutch he is in the shoot-out, something Canada historically struggles with.

Byfield is a bit of a mystery. 2nd World Juniors, not playing against the other team's best players, let's hope he can step up.

You can say it a lot more than me.
As soon as I see Byfield do something maybe I can comment on his usefulness,

Interesting. I don't agree that the play died when he got it in the oppositions end. I also have tracked him creating or getting a good 10 scoring chances through two games. Keep in mind the WJC is largely a 19 year old tournament and his linemates both come from the same draft year as him so relatively speaking he is playing on a young line.

So unlike some other players most notably on team White he has been asked to drive the mail for his line against a largely older and more experienced forward core.

I have actually been quite happy with his play, he has shown himself capable of going head to head against the Dach line and holding them at bay unlike Byfield/Krebs who have gotten crushed by that matchup.

Pretty much this. People put too much stock in camps, 90% of the team will have already been picked prior to camp and the camp is only used to determine the final few slots.

Hope he makes a full recovery, with no lasting side effects. I would guess that most of the others deemed unfit to play have similar stories. The pace of the scrimmages was fast....really fast, and trying to compete with your lungs at less than 100%, or lacking in energy, would be near impossible.

Nobody is pumping Lapierre's tires here. He's got chemistry with Mercer. He and Perfetti tore up the Hlinka together. The three of them would make a perfect line.

No disrespect for Holloway or Zary but I'd take Lapierre over both of them.

This virus is no joke.
True. Having said that, we can't turn off life. This tournament will bring a LOT of happiness to a LOT of people and, if they can pull it off, they should.

I NEED the WJR's even tho I'm surrounded by family and people I love. I'm sure there are a ton of people who don't have people in their lives (because of Covid) and NEED it even more than me.

Anyway, hopefully it will be played and everyone will be okay.

I saw nothing from Lapierre that would make me take him over Zary. Holloway hasn't played in a scrimmage yet, but he's a different sort of player. Athletic, with speed and power. I would use him on the wing. The sort of guy that you stick with a smaller, slower playmaker like Perfetti to create some room, or on a super checking line with Mercer and Zary/Rees.

I thought Holloway would finish higher on the H.C. pecking order.

I hope it goes ahead.. They should be fine everyone makes it into the bubble clean.. follow the protocols .. I think they'll be ok.
If someone gets injured and has to leave go to a hospital .. that opens some risk

Beckman was better scoring over his peers (actually led the WHL scoring race by quite a bit) and he Won the whl MVP, but he isn't guaranteed a spot on the team.

Fyi, not saying perfetti shouldn't be on the team, just saying these specific points aren't entirely valid as for someone making the team, as I'd say there is less than a 50% chance beckman makes it.
