WJC: 2021 Canada Roster Talk

It may have also been protection for their own friends/family. If you have Covid and you can't go home (for fear of bringing it back to your area), you might as well stay, rent free, in a Canadian hotel.

Thanks. It's amazing he made it this far. He was a seventh-round OHL pick, 4th round NHL pick, now trying out for Canadian World Juniors.

It's a shame that his once-in-a-lifetime opportunity came to a crashing halt because of covid-19. Just hoping him, and all the other players, make it through this okay.

It's disappointing that some players were ruled out for that reason, though Robertson seemed like the only one likely to make the team. With Simoneau and Grieg being among those sent home it definitely seems that there was some miscommunication along the way considering that they had issues before even showing up in Alberta. As things stand right now it isn't so different than the situation if hockey was progressing normally with injuries, NHL interference and so on. Hopefully there won't be that much covid impact going forward for all teams.
 
As I said elsewhere, we have 41(?) players who are ready to go. Find another 10 (can't remember how many players per team this year) and quarantine them NOW. They'll be available for Christmas. Then add them to "Canada 2" in case Sweden drops out.
 
Still got to cut 11 forwards. This team is going to be really hard to make.

I'm going to put them into tiers from Lock to Longshot. Let me know if this even close to correct.

that is a pretty good breakdown.
I have read it where Clarke may be bubble at least.
The likely to make it list fine.
I would put Beckman and Suzuki and Wright as long shots.

That looks pretty correct to me. If there are any quibbles, they are minor ones.

It's the world championship, not some bush-league made-for-TV "World Cup."
 
Perfetti certainly didn't look like a guy who should be a lock in the scrimmages. I thought Zary and Rees looked better. Robertson wasn't great or anything, but I thought he was a good bet to make the team. Hunt not so much, but his camp wasn't wasted. I think he made a very good impression, and will be in a strong position next year....or maybe not. They are going to be loaded back on D again next year.

just so we’re clear, I’m not disagreeing with the general point of this statement, or even the specifics about Perfetti.

His entry and exit numbers in the scrimmages notwithstanding, I can’t be the only one who noticed how often those entries died once he got into the zone? Or how ineffective he was in the offensive zone when the puck was not on his stick?

Could have been a linemate issue, but he’s an offensive player who will have to make the team in an offensive role, and he didn’t create scoring chances.

We’ve also got guys like Cozens and Dach and Byrum to lead the transition game. I’m a Perfetti fan and had him pencilled in on my team pre-camp, but he needs to show something else too.

We saw it differently I thought he had good vision in their end.

Perffeti is most well known as a finisher. The fact that he’s doing all the zone entry stuff is a bonus as far as I’m concerned. The thing about goal scorers is they do need people to get them the puck. I think you just need to find the right set-up men to play with him.

Glad to see none of the 5 guys who will miss the tournament because of protocols are important players. I didn't even have Robertson on my team so it doesn't affect the team for me which is lucky. Could have been a lot worse. I hope those who had/has covid get healthy and all 5 aren't too upset at missing the tournament for these kind of reasons. I know it must feel awful.

With Zary, Pelletier, Jarvis, Poulin, Wright and Suzuki fighting for the last forward spots. I literally can't make up my mind.

Quick question, in normal years when teams have 2 extra skaters they're allowed to roster all 20 skaters for every game. With teams allowed 22 skaters now are they still allowed to roster everyone for every game or do 2-4 guys have to sit in the press box?

Would suck if Alberta Health gave them clearance to resume practising this morning if they were just going to shut it down later today
