I think Team Canada owes these kids one more scrimmage, at the very least, before cuts are made. Who knows, maybe Newhook and Holloway come in and stink it up, or Beckman/Perfetti/Lapierre find their scoring touch. One of O'Rourke, Cormier, Hunt, etc. might separate themselves from the pack.

You can't be gifting spots. It'll be tough enough cutting some of these players as is, knowing that they could play on any other junior team in the world.

I agree. The kids have been in quarantine this long, so keep them for another week and give them one last chance

So Beckman/Perfetti/Lapierre need an extra game for a chance to prove themselves (for 3 total), yet Newhook and Holloway will have WJC hopes determined by 1 game?
Fact is, as important as the selection camp is, the coaches usually know who the majority of the players that will be on the team before the camp even starts. What these players have done for the past couple of years leading up to this tournament is just as important as what they do in a 2 week (normal time) selection camp or even this extended camp.

This situation has become less than ideal, but the focus should be on making the strongest team possible. This is especially true after such a good opportunity to have the team prepared for the tournament was blown. They should release, as soon as is possible, the players who have no chance of making the team. The players who will actually make the team need the ice time.

You are correct. Even in a normal year body of work is way more important than what happens in camp. Specific to this year, when most players have yet to play a league game, and camp being cut short, what players have done in the past is/should be the most important factor. What players did in league play and in international competition with Canada in the last two years will ultimately decide who makes the team. So far in camp, Byfield has not been great but he is still going to be counted on to lead this team. You are not going to cut him because he was lacklustre so far in camp. A great performance in the scrimmages certainly can elevate a player in a coaches eye but they will account for that recency bias, and take into account all of the pre scouting as well to make decision.

Scouts always talk that short tournaments are not important in scouting and that larger sample sizes (league play) are the most important factor. Well after 8 months off it would be very difficult to select the team based off of only 2 scrimmages, they will look at the larger body of work to make decisions. IMHO

I think this and most years the drills and parts of practice we don't see matter more than the scrimmages do. They coached Newhook and Holloway for quite a few days and they've seen them both play before. I agree that the coaches already know who made the team and if the players got to play the 7 games they should have it might be different but even if a guy plays amazing in one post-break scrimmage I highly doubt it would move him from cut to a roster spot at this point. Maybe if someone put up like 4 points and looked absolutely dominant they could go from cut to healthy scratch.

I remember a few years ago Matthew Phillips played fairly lackluster throughout camp and then in his final camp game tied the game with a natural (or close to it) hat trick (A couple weak goals I think) and he was in the first round of cuts.

Edit: And body of work is really important too as the guy above mentioned.

The problem is they don't have any exhibition opponents and keeping everyone there would fix that - Red vs White until the other countries clear quarantine.

Not convinced this should continue though. Take the Vancouver tournament where Bouchard was one of the worst defensemen in camp, made the team anyway, and proceeded to disgrace his country with his simply appalling play in his own end. If someone really stinks up the joint in camp, cut them.

I’m not sure what the staff is going to see after another period of inactivity that they didn’t already know a week ago. They know who the cuts are.

this is what I have said prior. What can they tell in a the first few days of camp reopening that they don’t already know.
If it has to do with the release of quarantined players for country wide dispersing than I guess that may be the reason but the coaches have had enough time to chew on the hard reality that this is not a normal year in getting down to the short straws in a hurry.

does any one know the plan now. When are they back on the ice.
Are they just scrimmaging or any games planned before pre tourney games.

Anyone think Pronman’s take on the roster is fairly off given what we saw in scrimmages?
Connor McMichael – Kirby Dach – Dawson Mercer
Alex Newhook – Dylan Cozens – Peyton Krebs
Cole Perfetti – Quinton Byfield – Philip Tomasino
Dylan Holloway – Connor Zary – Jamieson Rees
Extras: Jack Quinn, Samuel Poulin

I think is pretty close... I would have Pelletier as one of the extras based on his play in the 2 scrimmages.. I guess it would be a quibble.

Bowen Byram – Jamie Drysdale
Thomas Harley – Braden Schneider
Kaiden Guhle – Justin Barron
Extras: Donovan Sebrango, Jordan Spence

I would have Korczak over Barron. I like Spence as an extra PMD. So I guess I would cut Barron. Pronman has him higher in the pecking order than I do.
I did not mind Sebrango at all I'd be ok with him there. I like his mobility. I think as a shut down guy I might take Robinson over him

I do disagree that Korczak is a long shot .. I thought he was very steady .. pretty mistake free , reliable.
