I don't really get why Laf would want to come back honestly. He was the best player in this tournament last year, won gold and nearly had a serious injury. I think he's probably focused on the NHL rather than coming back to dominate a tournament he's already won and was the best player on the ice for.

Side note I wonder how they select the team now. I think the defence was locked but it seems to me the final 6 forwards (including the 2 extras), were up for grabs.
But that’s like asking why players come back after dominating and winning a Stanley cup. The point is to see if u can do it again.

If I'm Laf, it depends on when the NHL starts. If the NHL starts in February, I would love a training / playing head start at the WJR's. If there is any overlap, I'd stick with the NHL.

There’s still so much uncertainty with the NHL start date while we inch closer to the deadline date for guys to enter the bubble. The Rangers should lend Laf with an out-clause as Chicago did with Kirby Dach. If that early January date stays firm, then they can pull him from camp, but you don’t want Lafreniere to miss the window only to later see the NHL move to a Feb start.

The depression comes when the income stops or slows cause your business or employer's business went under or is closed. Covid has killed 10,947 people and 10,781 were in LTC homes (98.4%) in Canada (as per CTV). It is not in the slightest dangerous to the average person. Only if you are sick and old to begin with does it do harm (& so does the flu every year and we don't punish people for that on an annual basis do we?).
tell that to my co-workers 47 year old brother.... no longer with us.

Bingo! Plus you’re supposed to be playing for the crest on the front, not the name on the back. I think some people may have forgotten that.
It's always an honour to have the chance to represent your country. Being able to play meaningful games before camp also gives him a head start relative to most other guys in the NHL.

We don't know the long term effects that Covid could have on all of our organs, even in people that are young and healthy. The risks are definitely higher than having the flu. It isn't a good idea to get Covid.

I think he's farther above this competition than any player would be in the NHL though. Like even the absolute best offensive players don't dominate the NHL to the extent Lafreniere did last WJC. He had 11 points in 5 games, he was flat out a man among boys. I just don't see why you'd risk injury when you're weeks-months from starting your NHL career when there isn't really anything left to prove. If he's released he's going to dominate even more?

Just my thoughts.

And you are definitely entitled to your thoughts and if he didn’t care about bringing another championship to Canada and just cared about personal accolades you are correct. I would disagree with the premise that no player has dominated NHL more. Jagr would often get 11 pts in 5 games. Not to mention Gordie Howe and any of the greats. Wayne Gretzky. All men among boys. Gordie also played before players got a boatload and for so many years so if dominating was boring you’d think his career would be super short.
Also that’s to say that the NHL season starts in January or February. If the season is delayed, why not. I can’t think of any player having a career damaging or heaven forbid, career ending injury at the world juniors.

I think the NHL is a bigger pond than the WJC, the NHL is the show it's the best league in the world. The WJC is the best U20 players, I don't think they're on the same scale. When I compared Laf vs WJC to best player in the NHL I'm referring to currently not using the all time greats, I also don't believe his stats tell the full story of his play. Hayton had 12 points in 7 games and I don't think he played nearly as well. Laf also was injured in the 2nd period of one of those games so it's more like 4 and a half games.

I get players don't usually have career damaging injuries in the WJC but it can happen at anytime, I can't recall who but someone had a bad leg injury while playing for Canada in the Olympics or WHC 5 or so years ago. Just because it's uncommon doesn't mean there's no risk. When Lafreniere got hurt last year the initial reaction was that it looked really bad, luckily it wasn't nearly as bad as initially feared but it was a close call and could have wound up worse.

We'll see maybe he'll come back, I don't know how much the situation has changed with the uncertainty of the NHL start date but I do know Mckenzie said that if he was betting on it, he thinks Laf is likely done with junior hockey and has his sights set on the NHL. On top of that if Lafreniere does return he needs to be in camp by Dec 6th per IIHF rules so the clock is certainly ticking.

On top of that this may very well be the best team Canada has ever had at camp, adding Laf feels like KD going to the Warriors lol. Unless of course Hughes and Kakko play in this tournament as well...

I don't get the injury concerns. Injuries can happen at any time. It can happen in his first game in the NHL. And heck, if injuries are a concern, why not just tank the last few games in his junior career? After all, he knew he was going to be, at minimum, 3rd pick overall. So why risk the injury playing the last few games of junior?

I agree with the others on here........you do what is best for your career. In this case, it is about actually getting some ice time. If the NHL starts on Jan. 1, then stay with the Rangers. If it is delayed until Feb, then get some playing time by participating in the best junior tournament in the world. And hey, buy some insurance.

Yup.

Now the NHL has to get off the butts and let the world know if/when they will start.

Exactly. Lots of guys are playing in summer leagues these days; playing meaningful games is worth the risk.

is it not better to just cut 16 or so souls now than wait 10 days.
Come on man. They know who is on bubble plus.
Get it over now.

2 players tested positive and all these guys were playing with/against them on the ice. I would assume all would be considered close contacts and have to quarantine anyway regardless of whether they were still at camp or sent home. So I don't see how cutting them helps out any in that respect.

For the kids that make the team, this will still have been worth it. To get cut after going through all of this is going to be one hell of a bitter pill.

The only good news about these quarantine guidelines is that once the cuts do happen, the players won’t have to make their way through that gauntlet of reporters asking them how they feel about getting cut!

the injury factor isn't on their minds it might be on the Rangers mind though.

And they know they can concentrate on practicing/getting better without worrying about Covid.

Hockey Canada had to know there might be a Covid outbreak. I'm just glad it happened early.

Now Covid is what OTHER countries need to worry about.

One thing about the whole bubble protocol that isn’t emphasized near enough is that once teams enter the bubble on Dec 13 they have to stay in their rooms for 5 days and continue to test negative. That’s why there’s no exhibition games until the 20th.

The Lafrenière thing is just about dead. It’s nice they keep professing hope through the media but it’s not happening. He has to fly to Canada and start his 14 day quarantine just about this second to be able to enter the Edmonton bubble with the team on Dec 13. Would they even allow modified quarantine with skating before the rest of the team gets out of theirs? Doubtful. Are they going to allow any sort of modified quarantine at all after this scare where one guy could bring something in without a full 14 day quarantine and wipe the entire team out of the tournament? The teams have to be together by the 6th too. For a guy that’s focused on the NHL looking at 3 weeks of isolation and inactivity before and after the bubble just to be on this team it’s obvious it’s not happening.

Now all players are covid free, bring all 46 players with them into the bubble and play 2-3 practice games.
