I will say without a moment of hesitation that Lalonde has been the #1 mistake made by Yzerman…Nothing comes close…Lalonde was f***ing terrible.
Maybe but his free agent signings have been dogshit too. Aside from Kane. He is basically the only one that has been good. Everyone else is mediocre to God awful.

Na I think the whole moving walman debacle was cause he was planning on adding trouba and that fell through

Never made sense to be in such a rush to move walman you had to attach a 2nd. We never should have wasted a 2nd on moving him,if anything we should have got a 2nd or at the least a 3rd

We could have used his offense on the back end this year if anything he could have been involved in a deal for another defender. Anyways nothing we can do about that trade now I just think moving maata was the best for the team as it gave Johansson the chance to shine

Who knows what might of happened if he stayed? Just use the 3rd we got for maata in a deal for another dman now. Faster the better

Edvinsson would have stayed down, and not promoted up until Määttä is traded.

And Johansson proably lost on waivers.

So, both moves enabled pretty good things happening. Ed did play from game1 and Johansson stayed as extra. Got his chance after Määttä was gone. We got a 3rd pick. And the circle went around, we got a pick for a lost pick (Walman). And that lost pick was get from Gibson <> Kiiskinen + 2nd as extra.

All in all, our kids took the roster spots.

Maybe everybody understands now and can stop the damn whining.

A whole lot of TBD. But I have no idea how the Hurricanes made that trade without more confidence that Rantanen would extend in Carolina.

Theres no way Johansson would have been on waivers, he was one of our better dmen in g.r and yzerman wouldnt have exposed him

Edvinsson would have been up regardless. Maata's deal gave Johansson more of an opening. If walman stayed gustafsson wouldnt have been signed

People were saying the maata trade was a mistake and I simply said it wasn't and opened up a spot for johansson and losing walman and a 2nd was the bad move

You dont agree? Cool ... I'd rather have had walman + kept the 2nd and not have gustafsson

At least Walman has higher Goals against numbers at San Jose vs. any of our current "bad" (Gustafsson, Petry, Holl) defenceman, so maybe someone would like to have a worse team.

He was just carried by Seider.

Now that I see there is a source mentioning the name and I'm not just making it up, I once again ask would it would cost to bring in Morgan Geekie?

I see now that he is listed as left winger with Zacha and Pastrnak, but has also taken a lot of face offs. I'm looking at him as center depth in the short term and an undervalued player in the long term if he works out and re-signs

Does Anaheim really need Trouba for anything?

Think we should go after him. If they could retain a bit of salary, or just take Holl as a cap dump (which makes the same thing). And we would add some prospect Verbeek knows and likes from our system.

Currently Trouba's salary is 6.0M for 2 last seasons, and caphit is 8.0M.

I wonder if he has some old chemistry with Gustafsson from the Rangers, so that would seal the 3rd pair.

Chiarot - Seider
Ed - Johansson
Gustafsson - Trouba

A bad move is a bad move regardless of whether you also made good moves.

Trading Gibson for Kiiskinen and a second was a good move. We got arguably the better prospect and a free second. No complaints there.

Trading that second and Walman for nothing was a bad move. We got rid of our second best defenseman and a pick for nothing.

Trading Maatta for a 3rd was a bad move. He was a solid steady contributor that played well and could stabilize his pairing. That's worth more to us than a third.

Making room for Edvinsson and AlJo was a good move. They're our second and third best defensemen right now.

Choosing to make room by getting rid of good players- Walman and Maatta- so that we could keep/sign bad players- Chiarot, Petry, Gus and Holl- was a bad move.

In sum total, sure it's a net positive and I'm ultimately happy with the way it's working out for the most part. That doesn't mean that we shouldn't criticize the mistakes we made and try to do better going forward.

If you win a hockey game 7-6, you can both be happy that your offense scored 7 goals and upset that your defense let in 6. Our amateur scouting did a great job. Our pro scouting did a terrible job.

Walman/Maatta-Seider
Ed-AlJo
Maatta/Walman-Chiarot/Petry/Holl

Is a defense that I'd much prefer to

Chiarot-Seider
Ed-AlJo
Holl/Gus-Petry/Gus
and there's no real reason that we couldn't have the former.

You make some moves for the long-term plan, which was always those prospects.

That's why the moves were made. Good or bad.

Many times the priority will be:

1. Keeping the best players.
2. Can't trade bad players, because they are bad.
3. So you trade the players who are wanted elsewhere --> to open the spots for our own kid core who'll deserve it.

It's pretty simple.

I feel like he are going to get Cozens and or another D man at the deadline.

Cozens 7.1M for Tarasenko 4.75M + incentives would add 2.35M in cap.

Trouba 8.0M for Holl 3.4M + incentives would add 4.6M in cap.

That would be total 8.95M

And our deadline space is projected to be 10.8M.

It would still leave room 1.85M for Kane/Kasper/Ed bonuses. If all the cap space is not used at the deadline roster, this space would still grow to season end, to include more bonuses not sliding to next year's cap.

I don't see Cozens, at least during the season - seems like Buffalo wants proven players and I'd be surprised if Yzerman significantly changes the roster in a playoff push.

I think we'll see a 3rd pair D addition and a 3rd/4th liner who can kill penalties and help close out games (assuming Copp is out for a while).
