Maybe its just me, but I feel like its been a LONG time since we last had somewhat of a blue-chipper in net. Like seriously, last couple tournaments have had guys I've barely heard of. I remember we had a good run of Price, Mason, Tokarski, Allen, Visentin.

Fucale may be the last blue chip goalie (at the time) we had play for us? Maybe I'm drawing a blank?
Carter Hart.

That Germany game was decent practice I guess, especially with how little game time the players have had this year, but still kind of a waste. I'd like to see Mercer replace Quinn in the lineup. Also have to figure that Schneider is gone for the game tomorrow.

That was pretty unenjoyable to watch. Honestly I think the score should've been closer to 10-2 with even semi competent goaltending on the German side. A bunch of our goals came on nothing shots.

Hopefully this at least gets Mercer and Tomasino everyday spots even though most of their points were due to German error.

A big win as expected against Germany. Good to see a lot of guys get points to build some confidence heading into tougher games.

Nice that Cozens had a monster game because he’ll be a huge piece for this group moving forward.

sorry if I missed this but why was Dach playing wind when he was in the lineup? Wouldn't he be the obvious choice for top center since he played center basically all year in the NHL?

Byram was shakey defensively again against Germany, but I better not point that out in this thread ...
Actually, he was shaky with the puck not without it in the first. But hey, don't let facts get in the way of narrative.

He was a little careless with the puck in the first but he bounced back nicely. He was actually pretty good is his own end and broke up a lot of plays so I don't know what you were watching. I'd say he was comfortably Canada's best defenceman. Looking forward to see if he can continue that play against some stronger teams.

His arm / wrist has a zigzag in it from when he broke it so he isnt gonna be back for a while

More trivia than anything else but I never would have thought that two Newfoundlanders and a player from the Yukon would produce seven goals and 13 points in a WJC game. Even Sanderson, though he mainly played in Alberta, is of Northwest Territories extraction through his father. Almost every region of Canada is covered in one way or another.

He was actually a rock defensively.
He was a bonehead with the puck though. Those bad decisions simply can’t happen but it’s tough to criticize his defending in that game.

I'm guessing nerves and rustiness , he's played way better against some elite top OHL teams who are probably at least just as good as the German team. We'll see how he looks in the other games, he's not yet skating as well as he normally does

I think its his processing speed of the game. The OHL he's the man there is more time and space and he does a lot off the rush on his own. Here you need to read and react and move the puck to the open man at the right time and move to support the play. IMHO he does not process the game .. In the Russia game I think it was Newhook that passed it to him on an entry and then broke for a give and go and Byfield didn't get it , didn't see it. Last night vs Germany he got the puck in the corner and was trying to stick handle by players while standing close to still rather than making a short pass to the open man.. His utilization of his team mates and how to play off his team mates is lacking. Now again .. its a small sample.. there is an adjustment to make . I hope he can make it but its a short tournament. I think the 4th line energy role he had with Zary and Mercer vs a good team, the Russians, is where he needs to be at this poiint.. Keep it simple get it low, work, forecheck hit, support in battles. I also don't think Quinn has made the adjustments .. he can score we know that.. but this team is about pressure, winning battles and moving the puck quickly .. he is struggling with that as well.

I wonder if Byfield wouldn't be better off on the wing where he has less responsibilities. At least for this tourny

maybe worth a try.

We need to do something to get him going. I liked his first exhibition game.

Was completely invisible in a 16-2 thrashing of Germany.

It’s such a perplexing case for why he doesn’t dominate in best-on-best events against his peers. He needs to step it up if we’re going to take Gold. We’re all just waiting for him to impose his will and take over a game.

That's the thing. There have been plenty of players with average at best hockey IQ , who despite not living up to their potential in the NHL managed to star in this tournament like Bjugstad, Nichushkin, Virtanen , Puljujarvi. The thing is most of these physically gifted players are on the wing not Center like Byfield. I think it's strange for us to grasp Byfield's struggles because Hockey Canada almost always takes centers with high to elite hockey IQ. Still don't know if that is the real issue for Byfield though, but honestly think moving him to the wing will at least help him contribute in this tournament

Maybe Byfield is just a little rusty because he hasn’t played a game since February and is getting his hands, feet and lungs up to speed. He is you and big. Traditionally we see bigger guys take a bit longer. The kid has also grown over an inch and added between 10 to 15 pounds since his last game.

These are still just tune up games. Would Have loved to see him played more last night in a game that was so out of reach. Get him out there skating shooting and more involved instead of having the big boys pad stars. We are an injury away from him being a top 2 center. I would rather try and get him jumpstarted in a meaning less last couple of periods then staple him to the bench.

I agree he was the bear defenseman offensively. A complete doofus defensively though.
