Made the best of the situation TBH. Those are all good matchups in their own way.

Glad we’re playing Russia in the pretournament, need a game against our biggest rival going into this.

I’m glad that’s the match-up, we need tough competition early on. Russia has a very strong team and the best goaltender, I suspect we’ll see them for Gold.

Sucks we have to wait a few more days, but such is the times we’re living in.

Agreed .. I was hoping they'd find a way to get another game in but it is what it is... Russian's have all been playing so they should be sharp early.. anyway it'll be good to get them going

That is unfortunate about the pre-tournament games, though it's understandable I suppose. Canada has now gone from a planned 8 pre-tournament games (including USports) down to 1.

As far as "trolls" go, the more the merrier. Dumb takes defended passionately but poorly are the lifeblood of intrigue around here.

You have Askarov over Knight?

Yup, by a decent margin. I think he’s the best goalie prospect since Carey Price and he was without question the most decorated goalie internationally heading into a draft in their draft year.

Go check the number of Gold medals he had going into his draft.

also rocking a .96 GAA and .962 Save % thru 7 KHL games. Big difference in caliber vs NCAA which is good but not on that level

Oh, I know he’s insanely good. I just have Knight a touch above because he’s a year older.

For what it's worth, Askarov has gone before Knight in all of the WJC Pools.

All of us draft nerds value Askarov more in this tournament for whatever reason. Doesn't necessarily mean everyone would take Askarov over Knight as a prospect.

I don't really get why they cut the pre tournament down for everyone. Obviously Germany can't participate, and Sweden's games had to be either cut down or completely eliminated as well. But it looks like the other 8 teams are fine and practicing. Not sure why they couldn't each have 2 pre tournament games. 4 tomorrow/Monday, and the 4 more they have scheduled now for Tuesday/Wednesday

Yes, that would have been nice, but now Canada will be even more well rested. I mean, they were already weeell rested, but now they’ll be weeeeeell rested!

Agree. Canada vs Germany's opponent.

Because he was the 2nd OA pick and is a top 5 prospect in Hockey. I'd expect him to be higher up in the lineup.
That’s a reasonable hypothesis on the surface, but those that follow more closely are aware that his monster numbers haven’t translated from the OHL to... really anywhere else as of yet. There is hope that he can pick it up, but on merit (and with a such a stacked lineup) he’s properly slotted as a depth player for the moment.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they gave him some second unit PP time to try to get him going, however.

Yeah, that doesn't mean much.
