Zegras may well be the best player in his draft. He was highly rated before the WJC. He should be more valuable than any of the players mentioned. That being said we know what Zegras can do. It would be nice if they spent time on the lesser known players - drafted or 2021 eligible.
Based on fuggin’ WHAT.

A D+1 college season replicated or bested by dozens of players who became nothing?

He’s a really good player. He’s also terribly overrated.

I’d still take Seider and Broberg over that entire overrated Yankee team from the 2019 draft.

Likewise, Dach has shown thus far to be the best forward from his draft class and I think he’ll only continue to show that. Zegras is an excellent playmaker but he’s a soft perimeter player. Dach brings so much more to the table beyond just points.

Dach > Zegras.

I don’t get it either. Newhook won Rookie of the year in the NCAA, not Zegras. Also 6 of his 9 points in the WJC last year were vs Germany and Switzerland. He’s def a top prospect but some people go nutty over Zegras for no concrete reason.

I’m guilty of pumping Zegras’ tires. I was lucky enough to go watch him a handful of times in his draft year and he was already better than the best veteran NCAA players. His vision is incredible and he’s clearly processing the game at a higher level than anyone else. But maybe I only saw his good games, and no, I wan’t able to watch him at WJC-20 last year since I was overseas.

I'm pretty sure that's how most players put up big point totals in this tournament... Everyone piles on the lower seeds, though Germany was no joke last year, they beat the Czechs and gave both Canada (4-1) and USA (6-3) competitive games. Without his 4 point effort vs Germany US may have lost.

Also, USA didn't even play Switzerland last year. You're thinking of the Czechs, who the US needed overtime to defeat, so it's not like he was stat padding.

And for whatever reason he was only being played about 8-12 minutes per game before their final match.

Probably not since Hockey Canada likes to put him on the wing in favor of Cozens, who's game has winger all over it.

His game has "winger" all over it yet he's one of the few centers actually playing center this tournament to start. If that's actually the case, perhaps you'd make a better coach.

I dunno man, Laf was pretty dominant last year. Guess we'll see.
He was really, really impressive. But I genuinely think Dach has the potential to have an even better showing.
I look at Bergeron's tourney in 05, after a year in the NHL, and I think Dach genuinely has the potential to put up those kinds of numbers.
I know this is a deep team; we'll roll four lines and I expect offense will come by committee. But that 05 team was pretty damn deep. It's just so rare for a player to come from a major role in the NHL and step back into this tournament. When they do, it usually ends up with some ridiculous numbers.
In a few years, I don't doubt that Laf will be the better offensive player. I just think that step from Jr. to pro is quite a massive leap, and seeing someone come back down may demonstrate that.

Misinterpreted your post. Still think you're wrong though. I'd be comfortable betting that Laf would have put up more than 23 points last year if he played in the NHL.
That's a really good point. I hadn't been thinking about it from that angle, and that's probably a safe bet.

Either way, I'm optimistic that Dach is going to have one hell of a tourney and I love this lineup for Canada.

I mean, who do you want at center?

The guy with greater puck control, vision, and playmaking.. and is also a beast in his own end physically?

Or the guy who skates directly to the boards every time he has the puck and is a natural and volume shooter?

Wait... is that last guy you're talking about Cozens??? I don't think that describes his game at all.

It's been his game forever.. he will end up on wing at the NHL level and be better for it. You don't want him to be the primary puck distributor on his line and he loves to go to the boards instead of attacking open ice
