Love how triggered habs fans are over Knies. Gonna make the rivalry that much better... Read one tweet with habs fan comparing Knies/Hutson to "Anderson/Makar" lol
Totally! I can hardly believe those fans they are missing out. If it was in leaf land, we would have already turn on him 6 months ago gotten a 4th and a conditional 6th. Then he would go on to be mediocre except in 4 years with his next new team hit 30 goals once. Just to give people the chance to rub that trade in even more.

What possible reason would compel the Leafs want to trade him if he is performing like he's worth a high first?

A boat is a boat, but a mystery box could be anything, even a boat!
I get it if it’s to rent a high end piece (preferably RFA) we otherwise couldn’t afford but a pick is spinning tires.

It could also be a red snapper or absolutely nothing! Never choose the box.

We are often more interested in what we don’t know than what we know. The promise is much greater, the potential higher, the rewards more substantial even with the risk involved. For three Canadian teams, the chance to add an important element to their late-season lineup is too enticing to pass up. It’s the allure of the unknown.

Three young NCAA players — Matthew Knies in Toronto, Sean Farrell in Montreal and Tyler Kleven in Ottawa — have made or soon should be making their NHL debuts, each with a chance to make a lasting impression and each with a skill set that fits what his team needs.

The Maple Leafs have been one of the top teams in the regular season and could make a deep playoff run, but many observers feel they are still missing one type of player. Enter Knies, a six-foot-three, 210-pound sophomore at the University of Minnesota. The skilled power forward is a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the top player in U.S. college hockey, and will compete in the NCAA’s Frozen Four, starting Thursday. A second-round pick in the 2021 draft, he is expected to sign with the Leafs immediately after his final collegiate game, in time for a three-game audition before the Leafs open the playoffs.

Everything about Knies’s game screams top-six forward, and there will be a temptation to plug him into a complementary role with stars Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner, John Tavares and William Nylander. Big, strong, fast and relentless, he could be the missing ingredient that has prevented the Leafs from taking that first playoff step. Knies was an impact player for the U.S. at the 2022 Olympics, and is hoping to go from an NCAA championship to the NHL playoffs. He may well have the red carpet rolled out for him.

.....................

Their situations are different — Farrell and Kleven will play just a handful of games this spring, while Knies likely will play as long as the Leafs do — but the arrivals of the first two and the anticipation of the third triggered memories of my call-up to the NHL with two games left in the 1982-83 season. I have always thought it was the easiest time to break into the NHL, when you are at the top of your game physically and confident from your success at your last stop.

The most important factor may be the way you are welcomed by your new teammates. You’re just another face trying to take someone’s job at training camp but, at this time of year, you’re someone who potentially can help the team.

You’re a mystery, yes, but you bring the allure of the unknown.

Yep. I don't think there's much motivation for any player to stay there other than for an opportunity or salary they wouldn't get on another team.
That's exactly it. And Knies controls his future 100%....if he get's traded to a team he doesn't want to play for, he can play out his NCAA career and then go UFA.

We have ample evidence that he wants to play with his idol on a team whose fans are clamouring for exactly what he can bring to the table.

Interesting discussion.

When Leafs traded a former 1st in Sandin who is already a successful NHLer for a future 1st or mystery box as per this discussion that is considered a good move,

However when you trade a former 2nd rounder Knies yet to play a single game in the NHL for a suggested high 1st rounder capitalizing on his potential in the trade that is a bad mystery boat move.

The potential of a player drafted in the top 10 (Arizona pick) would be considered higher than a former mid 2nd rounder.

We may find out about Knies future as soon as April 6th

Sandin was blocked by players ahead of him and solid potential behind him: Knies will fill a void in the organization.
It's called asset management

There is a pretty obvious distinction between the two scenarios that I am sure you are aware of and just glossing over because that is what you do.

There have been zero hints unless you take smooth brained children on twitter and HF as hints I suppose.

Just a hypothetical ... if he refuses to sign after the Frozen Four, do you trade his rights?

Or, go the distance and hope he signs after his college career is over?

Not doom-and-gloom, just contingency planning.

Hey it's a discussion board ...

If he has no plans on signing, I'd trade him, maybe we get a 3rd for him. I never liked the own rental thing or losing prospects for nothing.

If he doesn't sign after the Frozen Four, I would be pretty skeptical of his intentions. At that point it would be irresponsible to not at least check to see what his value is league wide in a trade situation.

With that said, there has been no inclination of him not wanting to sign to this point. Things can change, of course.

You'd get a lot more than a 3rd. Henry Thrun just got a 3rd.

Teams tend to not give up a lot when they know a player is headed for UFA status. Trying to mute expectations in that scenario.
