Just a reminder....there is a thread meant for those who wish to take their drafting grievances about how the Leafs might be drafting too many NHL players whose size doesn't appeal to them, even though some are big.

This thread is about Matthew Knies.

I'll even link it below for everyone's ease.

Prospect Info: - Marlies/Prospects Thread - 2023-23 Season Edition
Dude you spent 5 pages trying to clown on Stephen three times a day, why are you the thread police now? This thread is actually interesting to read aside from all the whiny sniping at each other.

One player I have curiousity about: Mikael Backlund. I think Calgary is in tough to get the wild card. Their forward group is aging. Backlund at 5.4 is expensive, but according to Dom's model at the Athletic he's playing at a value of 6.6 and shows a 98th percentile defensively, while putting up 9G/20A in 50G. He can PK and would be able to deal with the minutes at 3C. Is he an upgrade over a Henrique? Yes?? How much would he cost in a trade? I'd guess Kerfoot would have to go the other way for cap purposes. What else?
It's been mentioned by insiders that Calgary plans on being a buyer at the TDL.

The West is so wide open this year (see trash) just make the playoffs and anything can happen.

Duthie: The Toronto Maple Leafs have had a playoff spot locked up for months it seems and now it's just about who's going to get to play with who when they get to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the first round and how close are they, CJ, to getting that 20-year-old 'X-Factor'?

Johnston: Well it depends on what happens in the games, right? The Matthew Knies watch is officially on here, and look the Maple Leafs' brass is hoping that Knies is tied up here for the next few weeks chasing an NCAA title but there is a scenario whereby he might be eligible to sign his first NHL contract at some point in the coming days. Knies plays for the top-ranked University of Minnesota and they have their first Fargo Regional game on Thursday night against Canisius and they have to win that one, they have to win another one Saturday to get to the Frozen Four and if they lose either of those then he'll be eligible to sign that entry-level deal. The expectation remains that he is going to sign with the Leafs once that NCAA season is done. That's going to burn the first year of the contract right away and I don't think it'll be long after that point before we see him in a Maple Leafs uniform.

Congrats to Knies for being a finalist here... but he really should be third by quite a distance in this one. No discredit to Knies, but both Fantilli and Cooley have had amazing years. That being said.... Fantilli and Cooley are Freshman, and only two Freshman have won in the last thirty years... Eichel and Kariya.....
