I think a more physical JVR is probably accurate. Kreider and Anderson have unique speed for their size and im not sure Knies has that
Yeah, I think more physical JVR, or bigger Saad, are good upside comparisons, if Knies continues to develop really well. The main advantage these guys had over Knies at the same age was better straight line speed/acceleration. Knies is improving there, but needs to continue to do so.

He’s looking like a great pick though - I think he’d already be a solid 1st rounder in a redraft.

Pre-draft, Knies was compared to a Brandon Saad, who isn't known as a speedster but is agile and pretty good for being a bigger player so I would assume with typical development Knies' skating won't be an issue at the pro level.

Jvr was a 2nd OA!!
If Knies turns into a physical JVR, he is the biggest steal in the draft

Well, 2nd overall or not, in the end JVR ended up as a one dimensional 30/60 type guy.

I'm sure there will be a number of mid round picks in the draft that end up better than that.

I'm not sure what your definition of a number is, but I wouldn't count on that. 30 goal/60 points guys are not plentiful, at all.

I'd pretty easily take a physical JVR from a late round pick.

Absolutely! A physical JVR is a top five outcome in many draft classes. (Not just a top five pick, which of course he was).

I'd easily take a JVR clone with any pick outside of the lottery, never mind outside the first round. He didn't quite have the career you hope for from a number two overall, but if he was even picked something like 7th or 8th you'd be doing quite well with that outcome.

I think that's a little optimistic about what you can get with later picks.

Because I'm a geek I looked this up. The number of players with more points than JVR outside of the 2007 first round: One. (Jamie Benn). Wayne Simmonds is close, and PK Subban isn't that far off and is a defenceman. Actually, Wayne Simmonds would be a great result for our prospect.

Sticking with surrounding draft years:
2005 Draft - Three (Paul Stastny, James Neal, Keith Yandle)
2006 Draft - Two (Brad Marchand, Milan Lucic)
2008 Draft - Zero.
2009 Draft - One (Ryan O'Reilly).

O'Reilly and Neal were very early 2nd rounders so I'm not sure they should be included. Lucic isn't ahead by much.

Obviously points is not the sole criteria to evaluate with but it's an important one and the fastest one.

Anyway, moral of the story: JVR would be a very good result even if we were talking about a mid first-rounder. For a second rounder it's outstanding. A better JVR wouldn't just be a home run, it would be a grand slam.
