Comets offside as Deleo picks the Amerks pass just across the blueline and comes back in immediately, but a mate was trapped.

SOG 33-28 Utica after three.

13-7 Rochester in the third.

OT is next.

FRANK S. MATHERS TROPHY
mathers_200.jpg
Named after Frank Mathers, a 1992 inductee into the Hockey Hall of Fame and a member of the inaugural class of inductees into the AHL Hall of Fame (2006), the Frank Mathers Trophy is now awarded to the team that finishes with the best regular-season record in the Eastern Conference.

Mathers, who passed away in 2005, began his AHL career in 1948 as a player for the Pittsburgh Hornets. In 1956 he joined the Hershey Bears as a player and went on to lead the franchise as head coach, general manager and president.

During his 35 years in Chocolatetown, Mathers helped lead the Bears to 15 Calder Cup Finals and six championships.

Comets got the draw and turn it over in the Amerks zone.
Amerks ragging it.
Shoot and the Comets get it back.
Down the ice they go.
Gambardella down the Left Wing.
Hits Walsh in the slot racing past the Amerk defender alone to the crease.
He shoots.
Stopped by Luuk.
Walsh keeps right on coming and buries the rebound as it came off his pad.

COMETS W--------I----------N!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

3-2

1:11 into the OT.

Shaya didn't say a word about the Conference. He signed off his broadcast saying he hopes the Comets win the Conference in their last 2 games.

It was reported they only needed a combination of 3 points and they just got it 4 with the Providence loss and their win. He should have been up on that situation for sure!

Shaya isn't very knowledgeable about hockey after 17 years of broadcasting the sport.

Utica has 93 points with tonight's win. Providence's maximum points is now 92 with their loss to WBS tonight.

Springfield lost tonight too. Their maximum point % is now .625. Utica's minimum is .649 if they lose their last two games in regulation.

The Hartford thread on the Rangers boards has a discussion from Tuesday with someone wondering why the AHL fringy guys weren’t waived at the TDL for the AHL playoffs.

Not a problem at all now guys, no worries!

Man the Flyers are hot dog shit and their AHL club missed the playoffs? Not much to look forward to down there.

Yeah, the Phantoms have been pretty dire all season, they were pretty much destined for last place. A good chunk of Flyers prospects either are disappointing or got shoulder surgery (A weird amount of shoulder surgery involved there really).

Hartford dropping below Bridgeport is actually shocking to me because I’ve paid zero attention to that division lately and just assumed that Bridgeport was the other team headed for loserville.

That team has been Lamoriello-ed (in a bad way): rebranded with NHL team name, low on prospects, left to flounder etc. Cory f***ing Schneider, of all people, has been carrying that club at the end. He ended up with 14-11-4 record so far but he started the season with six losses in a row (which is why I wrote them off). He’s rolling with a season ending stretch of 10-3-2.

On the other side (just to make this weird), Keith Kinkaid very much did not carry Hartford at the end. He’s 20-14-2 on the year, but has a 7 game losing streak going right now. It’s more than that one streak, Kinky was actually 16-2-2 on Feb 5th and then it was downhill after that.

It’s not easy to miss the playoffs in the weakest division when only two teams don’t qualify. The Wolfpack rose up to that challenge by going 1-8-1 in April after going 4-8-1 in March.

They had call-ups and guys were traded, it happens. They traded for our old pal Nick Merkley at the TDL to try to juice their AHL offense but it wasn’t enough.

They awarded the Mathers Trophy to Laval last season and the through the Covid seasons. They just dropped it?

Shaya said there will be a Division title banner. I get it's like Nashville's banner for regular season Conference winner, but this will be the first season it won't be awarded? Is this a one year pause due to the different amount of games played and it will return next season when all teams will play 72?

the Frank Mathers Trophy is now awarded to the team that finishes with the best regular-season record in the Eastern Conference.

One of the best games by the Comets in a long time with quite a few guys missing. Daws was great in net. One thing I noticed lately is how well Vukojevic keeps progressing. Early in the season he was in between Adirondack and Utica, and he has turned into a really dependable guy for the Comets. Also: it's a shame Walsh doesn't seem to get a look in New Jersey this season. He really deserves it imho.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Walsh called up tomorrow with Utica having a week off.
