No. He’s scoring and was rewarded with a callup. He factored into scoring tonight and seems consistent. He was touted as a non-prospect when he was acquired from the NYI but maybe he can play on a fourth line in the NHL?
That wasn't my point. You said he "seems" to be playing well. That is a huge understatement. The guy has been on fire for weeks. The Utica fan base has developed a slogan for him and it's a warning to opposing teams, "Fear the Greer".
A.J. has steadily climbed up the chart to currently sit at #2 on the points leader pole trailing Zetterlund by 2 points, 52-50. He had all three goals Wednesday and followed that with 3 Assists tonight. He is leading this team and showing them the way. What's more impressive is that he has put up his 50 points in 49 GP while Zetterlund has taken 57 games to amass his 52.
Deleo, sitting at #3, has put up his 47 points in only 44 GP.
Holtz has accumulated his 43 points in 43 GP.
Thompson is more than 1 PPG. However, he has only played 8 games to acquire 9 points. His first game back in months and he recorded 1G/1A. He will be a big help to the Comets offense and should be back to near his top playing level by the playoffs.
It's not commonplace to have 3 players on the same team scoring at 1 PPG or better. and Fabian is close behind at .91 PPG. (Can't Count Tyce in this group since his sample is too small, but I'll bet his numbers will continue to stay on track.)
The PPGs after that fall off the scale to an average of .5 PPG, but there are 7 in that group with Gauthier and Walsh and Gauthier leading that group with .63 and .60 respectively.
So, yeah. I'd say A.J. seems to be playing well. He has as good a chance as any Comet of finding a spot on an NHL roster. It won't be top 6 like he has become here. He didn't start there, but Dineen can't keep him out of there.
If this team can only learn to play tougher defensively, I'd like their chances. It is currently their Achiiles heel. Allowing the Crunch to threaten to take tonight's game away from them by scoring 3 goals in a 2-minute span of the final 4 minutes of the game which turned a 4-0 shutout to a 1-goal game is screaming proof of the point I am making.
Just look at the number of times the Comets have scored goals all season only to be followed by an opponent's goal within the next 3 or so minutes. Oftentimes that single goal leads to the opening of the floodgates for a couple more. It happened tonight. The same thing happened Wednesday night after the Comets took a 2-0 lead. The Amerks suddenly scored not 1 but 2 in 3 minutes with the first coming 1 minute and 20 seconds after the Ccmets 2nd to tie the game and later in the period scored a 3rd to snatch defeat from the Comets' jaws of victory.
