GDT: 2021-22 season game 10 LA Kings vs St. Louis Blues @7:00pm 11/3/21

3-0 with Lemmy back in the lineup.

Just want to once again state that Kaliyev is my favorite prospect and has been since his draft. I know there is a small advanced stat discussion in this thread but I go back to the day he was drafted and watching the YT clip of all of his goals from his draft year. Sure, the scouting report didn't like his skating or his compete level etc...but I saw one shot on there that I had to rewind and watch a couple of times because I couldn't f***ing believe it.

I'm by no means a scout but I've been watching hockey for over 30 years: you know it when you see it. All he's done since then is confirm my thoughts and mostly disprove the "no compete and lazy" crowd. This board--like most--loves to overhype a prospect based on WJC performance or dismiss the WJC for a poor performance all in the same breath. Well, this guy went both years and performed very well including the clutch money goal in the semis. Went to the AHL and put up 31 points in 40 games including 14 goals with only three being on the PP. Also had at least two goals that would have been called goals if they were reviewed. Over a 68 game pace normal AHL season, that's a ~24 goal pace as an, allegedly, 19 year old in a league he wasn't allowed to play in if not for COVID. Oh, and he has size.

There are more important prospects, sure, but this is the guy that brings the excitement. You want him to receive the puck in a scoring area because you want to see that shot. Even though he isn't fast, you still kind of want him out on the ice for the 4-on-3 powerplay to start OT because you have every reason to believe that if he gets a good look, he can score from anywhere.

I don't think the Kings have had a prospect like this since Toffoli (and nobody else for years and years prior) but Kaliyev has better pedigree and an even better shot. Exciting times for sure.

He caught a puck in full flight at the opposing blueline and separated from a defender enough to rip a snipe from ABOVE the faceoff circle

That alone was a middle finger to all the scouting reports

It’s almost impossible to disagree with a word of that. The important point is his compete and skating and both are more than find and if you add that to his skillset and he will be the steal of thar draft. He’s also shown he’s coachable by the way he’s worked on play in his own end.

It’s just a shame we only get him for 4 more years, until he retires after his 40th birthday.

i just don't see kaliyev whiffing that one timer that kempe whiffed

i get it, he's not fast, there's lot of ice in OT but brownie ain't fast either

suppose it's not the tmac way

I was *furious* on draft day when Kaliyev was still available and we picked Bjornfot. Everything turned out fine, and we still got Kaliyev, but he was the prospect I’d been eying for the latter first round all year. He’s fantastic.

Watching the highlights.. Missed the game.

Kaliyev is awesome.

Nice to see Iafallo being productive wherever he's at.

Quick let some fat rebounds out, I don't like how he didn't reset for the second goal. But glad to see he can still get points for the team.

Dustin Brown turns 37 today. The only players from his draft class who are still active today are: Marc-Andre Fleury, Ryan Getzlaf, Jeff Carter, Ryan Suter, Brent Burns, Patrice Bergeron, Corey Perry, Joe Pavelski, Brian Boyle, Loui Eriksson, and Brian Elliott. I guess technically Eric Staal still counts as well since he hasn't retired, though he remains unsigned.

Staal is also the only player from the 2003 draft who has appeared in more games than Brown, but Dustin can pass him if he appears in 52 more games this season.

All that said, I hope this is his last year, and he gets his number retired on opening night next season.

I am hoping he signs a one year deal, where it is understood it is his last year. He can go to all the arenas and get cheered by the fans and gifts from the other teams Because he is loved league wide like Teemu

I think he has the skills to be a 40 goal 30 assist player.

He’s my favorite prospect too. I don’t like him playing on line 3 or 4 though. TM takes him off line 1 and the first PP unit after a half a game because he made a bad pass. I don’t get it. Also Todd putting him out in OT last night for his only shift with 3 seconds left on the clock was also another slap in the face.

Last season I was thinking he’d maybe sign a 1 yr deal, I love the guy. However, I’m coming around to the view that this should probably be his last season. I say probably because he could get hot and pot 20 at which point it becomes a different discussion. What I’d hate to see would for him to deserve to be a regular healthy scratch, it’d be far better to finish as a solid contributor, which he still is despite the drop off.

I think it’s about being eased into it, not given too much responsibility and pressure early on. It may not be the sexy way to do it but Kaliyev and Kupari look good so I’d suggest the way they are being introduced is working.

and thank you for the new avy

Hell, a week ago they would have found a way to lose. Important that they responded so well in OT, even if they didn't quite bury it, and finished it off in the SO.

I laugh every time I see this update

And it's beyond time they give guys like that chances to grow and make mistakes, trade some of that raw possession for offense, you keep people honest when you have instant offence like that bang bang clague->kaliyev->net play. Without that, teams can just sit on our predictable two-way players. Same thing on the PP, there's room for guys like Kaliyev (Vilardi, Tkachev) on this roster instead of redundancies when no one can turn possession into results.

After a few pretty losses it's time to accept an ugly win. The process has been good for the last 4-5 games, they earned the result over hte last 3. With tonight's sloppiness I wouldn't be surprised if the streak ends next but it's encouraging seeing play trend up especially against STL because I would have been in question mode...beat up the awful teams and lose yet again to a playoff team would be spinning wheels in mud. This is good progress.

Like Steve Miller sang "Take the money and run!" . 2 points is two points.

They played a blinder though, didn’t they. Björnfot is really starting to show his pedigree and he’s well short of his ceiling. To land both of those guys at #22 and #33 was great work and as it was carefully planned it was no fluke.

That's actually a lot of guys still putzing around in their late 30s.

Man that first period was bad. St. Louis looked 10x fast than LA. This may have been Kopitar's worst game of the year, so it is nice that there was depth players stepping up (even if it took 40 minutes to get going).
I have no idea why Kaliyev was not on the ice for the 4 on 3 PP in OT. Seemed like a no brainer to me.
TNT guy color commentator was Shitting on Kempe alot, some deserved some not. Also they were quick to point out that Quick should have had both goals, when really Quick was one of the reasons LA was in the game to begin with.

Watching the game again on the nhl network now, totally forgot we had the pp in OT. My god, what a whiff by Kempe in the slot!

Yep. On the plus side that shot is phenomenal, real good playmaker and pretty darn strong along the boards and on the puck. Still, he needs work on the defensive side of things -- his skating is hindering him a bit there.

Kings PP was crap last night, not often you can play that poorly on special teams and win the game. Technically the tying goal was a shorty for the Blues too.
