He has been a "legit 2nd pairing guy" since the second he took NHL ice. Imperious defense, world class along the walls, and an excellent penalty killer. EVERYBODY who plays with him sees an uptick in their individual and team games.

Christ, this board is getting dumber by the day.

This has to be hyperbole, correct? He didn't look good at the beginning of the year at all. and has been streaky his entire career. Also, players with imperious defense don't end up with negative relative Corsi, especially with the crappy defense we've rolled out in prior years as competition. I like Roy and have pumped the guy in the past, but I wouldn't take him over Doughty, Mitchell, Voynov, Martinez, Scuderi, Muzzin, or any of the guys the Kings rolled out as top 4 when they were contending.

There's a good case to be made that Matt Roy is the best Kings defenseman. Period. The guy is a rock back there. Quietly excellent. Lowest GA/60 and highest GF/60 at even strength amongst defensemen on the team. Best penalty killing defenseman on the team. Second in the league in GF% Rel over the past three seasons amongst defensemen.

Night in, night out, he outplays his competition. He just doesn't get the accolades because he doesn't score a bunch of points on the power play.

Roy does have the best GA/60 for full timers at ES, but he's actually 4th in GF/60 behind Doughty, Edler, and Anderson.

I cant find his GF% Rel stats, but that would be surprising. Here is his GF% vs. QOC:

Overall Roy has been solid and he's obviously having his best year this year. Also note that he almost never faces above-average competition. This doesn't mean he's a bad player, it just means that he's performance is excellent this year where he is at. But he's not this defensive behemoth some are making him out to be, he's just used correctly. Last season is going to be an outlier for QOC as who teams played was limited. His QOC probably would be around the -5/-10 level where he usually is. You can still see how he struggled last season, which matches what he looked like on the ice.

If you want to see the best defenseman on the Kings this year, it's Doughty:

Elite competition, year in and year out, and nearly always in the positive. You can clearly see he carries the load as his numbers reflect how good the team is. Until about 2018 he's was absolutely dominant against the hardest competition the league had to offer. While Roy may have a higher GF% this year so far his competition is far weaker. Drew is facing the toughest assignments of his career and has looked back to himself.

I guess me saying that "Roy is the perfect bottom pairing" dman is a rip on the guy. Absolutely not. Love the guy and have always been a fan of his game.
Yes, at the moment he is playing top 4. But with Clarke and Faber around the corner, he would be a monster #5. Which is not a slight on him. If Roy is LA's #5, then they will be a very competitive team.
Probably explaining myself horribly. Anyway, I'm a big fan of Roy.

Ok, I wasn't sure....and I saw the guys post, had the same posting style to me, and good insights, so I had to ask.

Drawing comparables now, are we? Tonellisghost, nonehtheless. Nice try, bud.

Of course its hyperbole considering who wrote it.

I like Roy and what he brings to the team at this time and I think Roy will continie to improve but its a matter of what his ceiling will be. There's plenty of competition coming his way.

Girard stood out like a sore thumb, and not in a good way, during the Playofs last season. He was simply outmatched by larger forwards. He is not someone I would want to acquire. I'll take an offensively limited Roy over Girard.

He was also really young, on a really young team. Using that point in his career is like judging Byfield for his 17yo World Juniors. Hell smart observers would use it as a time to buy low while the usual folks over react to a bad series.

I wonder if Roy has ever played on the left side. It would be nice to be able to float him over to there to pair with some of these young D that are coming up

I don’t think so but Walker has..
Say next season the Kings go
Doughty
Clarke
Durzi
Then you can package 1st, Roy, Kid, kid for a Chychrun/Provorov

You think Clarke will be ready to go next season? Defensemen usually take a couple of years in the beer leagues before they're ready for prime time. I would let him play in Ontario for a couple seasons. There's no need for him up here yet. We got Doughty, Durzi, and Walker and then plug in Bjornfot, Roy and Maata in wherever, and that's your D right now. That's a fine D corps. Heck, you can screw my sister with that D corps.

I think Clarke will make the jump and be here. He's already played against pros in the Slovak league and is dominating this year in Juniors. He just looks special and I'm not sure there's going to be a point in him spending another season in the OHL. In interviews with Yannetti and company it didn't seem like they think he's going to be there much longer either.

Clarke is caught in that OHL trap where it's NHL or OHL, is he not? He could use some AHL time. If his choices are limited could see him thrown in on D to see how he does.

Mikey/Doughty
Durzi/Roy
Bjorn/Clarke
Walker

Seems like a logical starting point for next years D. Swap Durzi, Clarke for the best fit. Someone probably capable of playing the left side. Upgrade Doughty's partner if possible. Not saying dump Mikey. Just make adjustments after trade. Walker may have a down year coming off knee injury.

Yes, next season it's OHL or NHL.

Though if his OHL season concludes early, he may get time in the AHL this season.

It would be awesome to see how he competes in the A given he's also already played vs. Euro men, but man, I have a hard time even imagining a scenario where he doesn't carry that team deep

Iaffalo Kopi Kempe
Moore Danault Arvy
AA Byfield Brown
Lemieux Lizotte Kaliyev

Grunstrom/Frk/Kupari

Assuming AHL:
Turcotte & Fagemo

There are going to be some very difficult roster decisions much sooner than we all expect. Some big trades should be coming this year or into next. There’s just too many players and not enough spots for them. Hopefully MB can help with this also. Who stays and who goes?? I’ve always been high on Fagemo and hope he gets more time. I can’t believe we still have guys like JAD, Byfield, Vilardi and Tkachev in Ontario. Good problem to have.
