Chycrun doesn’t supplant anyone on the Kings roster, unlike Eichel who became the Knights best player. Giving up a comparable package would be an over payment because a defenseman won’t lift this team enough to be a contender. All it does is improve your odds at being a playoff team. But that’s no sure bet for a team which is currently just above mediocre.
I like Chycrun, especially at his age and contract, but he’s not going to lead this team on a deep run anytime soon. So what exactly is the point of blowing your wad on a at best marginal return? It’s a distraction to focus on his gaudy goals number because it’s a one time accomplishment so far. That year he shared duties with OEL and Goligoski, so he had experienced defenseman to share minutes with. This year, his cohort is worse and he hasn’t made up the gap. The drop off on the Kings is just as steep, with the only positive being potential upside from guys like Anderson, Bjornfot and Durzi.
So does the potential cost of Chycrun make sense for this Kings team if it doesn’t guarantee a wildcard spot this year, and next year a top 3 finish in the division followed by a 2 round run in the playoffs? No, IMO.
