Ah yes, a smoke filled room full of drunks and people trying to separate you from your money or the clean outdoors with exercise and the beauty of nature. Quite an easy choice actually.
Yeah, but after the game are we supposed to, gasp, sleep?

No L'Atelier, no Frankie's Tiki Room, no 3am Pastrami on rye with russian dressing and coleslaw at NYNY?

I'll wear my mask, get all the vaccines I need, stay 6 feet apart, support charities, be kind to animals, invalids and andys, but goddammit I am an American and I will NOT catch up on my reading after a destination hockey event.

MGM Grand is a dump, but it was our dump during Frozen Fury. Anywhere else, the event turns into just another preseason game. And outside the event is Vegas, which is a trashy town, but still a place to get a four star meal.

I’m sure the food court at the mall across the street from the Vivint arena is top notch. But I’m just a simple hockey fan who wants their gauntlet if I’m going to travel to watch a meaningless game.

I like this, but I also like sitting at a poker table in Vegas with a bunch of drunk people trying to draw to an inside straight when I am holding top pair.

I get that they had to move Frozen Fury due to logistics, given that preseason hockey in Vegas isn't as special now with the Golden Knights being permanent residents there, but why not move it to Reno/Lake Tahoe?

I fully endorse this although I'm not sure what type of venue they have. It seems like a happy medium between what people seem to like about Vegas and Utah for venues. I went to Reno for the first time a few months ago and it was not what I expected (in a good way). I guess it's changed quite a bit since the days of Reno 9/11. South Lake Tahoe would be a bit nicer but I don't know if they have an arena around there.

There is one tiny arena in town that would be way to small however they broke ground last year on a new events center at Stateline which will be able to be converted to an ice rink.

Would not be surprised if there are kings/sharks or kings/knights preseason games here

This post needs more love.

P.S. Didn't the NHL try an outdoor game in Lake Tahoe very recently, and they had to cancel it because of the "extreme glare from the Sun"...?
yes, it was more the ice melting, the sun is crazy intense here even when its cold out. game wasnt completely cancelled but partially. Was gorgeous for TV but stupid for the sport itself and ridiculous they had to postpone part of it until evening.

Good idea!

Just went to Vegas and it was fantastic. Kind of want to go back for this Kings game except I've been to preseason games against Vegas and it is 1/100th of the experience that was Frozen Fury so it's just depressing.

SLC over Vegas??? Going to find better powder in Vegas in early October.

Frozen Fury 12-15 years ago was amazing. But after the teams no longer stayed in town before and after the game, it wasn't the same. Playing blackjack with Liewicki and Evans. Chatting with Blake when he was on Colorado. Hanging with Quick in the cab line. Spending an hour talking with Bob and Judy Miller just hanging out at the MGM. The gauntlet was filled with 90% Kings fans just having a blast.
It turned into just another pre-season game with the Gauntlet filled with a bunch of "Try-hards" and posers. It hasn't been great in years.

By powder do you mean cocaine or snow?

Sincerely,

Rick James
