It's a broadcasting style that has to appeal to neutral fans as well as homers. I only really have issues with broadcasters if they're offensively bad or have a clear lack of objectivity.

Bob was always rated highly as a neutral PbP. My main issue is the talking or giggling that seems to happen so often. I seriously am waiting for like QB or one of the important prospects scoring their first goal and the highlight reel is Faust talking about some BS with Fox.

The single biggest thing Faust needs to work on is matching his inflection to the tone of the moment. Often times he verbally highlights the wrong point in the play. I couldn't say how many times he raises his pitch in anticipation of an exciting play before it develops, then you can hear him deflate as its broken up. That whole up and down, up and down emotional showing needs to be ironed out. It comes across as someone excited about the game, but doesn't know it as well as the audience.

I think last seasons broadcast sucked mainly cause of covid. Many times they had to watch the game from a tv screen. Granted I do agree the kings broadcast in general could use some improvement. But Faust has gotten some high praise from other fans around the league. Look at his call of Tampa Vs Florida. Tons of people were talking about how good he was. We were spoiled with Bob, but Faust is a decent PbP announcer. I think people get so caught up in his quarks. But he has a good voice for the game.

It's funny you mention the cats-bolts series. That game 1 was one of the most entertaining games I'd seen in a while and I remember thinking that Faust was a low point during it. To be fair, its really all a matter of opinion.

The past five years I mostly watch games passively. I’ll have a tv on with the broadcast playing muted. And I’ll have a tablet on playing Nick and Darryl’s call. During the game, I’m in my garage working on something or in the kitchen cooking or in the backyard on the grill. If I hear something happen I’ll go look at the tv. There is a lag with streaming video, but the play usually comes up in 3-5 seconds. But I end up not playing close attention given how boring the Kings are.

The only place I play the broadcast with the volume on is in bed or on the couch. And I’m on my tablet shitposting on here most of that time and fighting off sleep. I really missed the east coast games last season. With the early start, I knew if I watched on the couch I would be able to stay awake and not have my night end zonked out after the first period.

I think if Bob had been calling games the past few years, I’d behave differently. I might pay more attention to the game because his take on the Kings play mattered to me. And now, I could care less about Faust’s thoughts on the Kings. He’s never been anything but superficial in my opinion.

He’s a perfectly competent broadcaster and I can’t wait for him to move onto a bigger stage where his millennial everyman stichk works best. But as a home fan paying a ridiculous premium to watch the regional broadcast, I hope that Nick has changed his mind about wanting to work TV if Faust bounces. Because he should get the job. If he doesn’t, whoever Luc hires will probably be worse than Faust.

Love the post overall. Regarding the first sentence: I just think it's kinda' sad that nowadays we can't just press the "power" button on the radio to hear their voices (SiriusXM subscribers aside), but that's the march of progress, I guess. Regarding the second sentence: I wonder - my supposition is that, in an alternate dimension (or whatever) where one of the other fill-ins from a few years ago actually got the full-time gig, there's less pining for Bob. Or maybe Faust will stop consistently making rookie broadcaster mistakes, tell Fox to cram it when he starts going off on non-sequiturs, and prove himself a worthy successor. A guy can dream....

Nick Nickson is a hidden gem that does not get the appreciation he deserves because he is on Radio no TV. Should have taken over for Miller.

As I recall the job was his for the taking but he didn't want it. Am I misremembering? He would have been the obvious solution otherwise, guy is phenomenal.

Joe Davis > Faust

Faust does do a better job nationally than when he's calling Kings games. I think a lot of the problem is that he has no on air chemistry with Fox and tries to crack too many jokes/yuck it up with Fox on the Kings telecast. Problem with that is he's not funny.

I agree but I say that as a huge Davis fanboy, I think he's an absolute perfect fit. But, as you or someone else pointed out, he also has Orel Hershiser rather than Jim.

I dunno, I like Faust, but I can admit he has a lot to learn as well. Much like prospects, he's young and not a finished product. I guess I'm looking at him through that lens, as well, rather than how does he fill Bob's shoes. Hell look at his background story, he's insanely new to broadcasting period.

I think you're right about Nickson, I remember the same thing.

Faust still has potential to grow so he should be granted a bit of leash, but Fox's aWAR has fallen off a cliff and I would recommend we buy him out.

They rotated a lot of different people during one of Bob's illnesses. I think almost everyone that pitched in was better then Faust.

The most important thing is that I don't hate the Pbp person's voice and call and at least, on that front, I do like Faust. He's fine.

I just find that he reads the game poorly and misses things that are obvious and has a list of annoying sayings that he overuses.

Yea he is a top dman in the league. Id rank him 3rd out of the up and coming dmen after Makar and Fox but think hes better than Mcavoy.
Once Doughty, Pietrangelo and the older players are finished he will be a premier name.

Chychrun - Doughty would be unstoppable and allow for Clarke to grow into 2D with Jakub as Doughty ages. Would be unreal. Anything not named Byfield, Turcotte, Clarke, Turcotte can go with those two 1sts. Of course, those latter four would be the ask, so that's the tricky part...
