Trevor Moore played 12 minutes a game at ES last season. 7th among forwards (100 minute minimum)

Of the 6 players above him only 5 remain. Even with Arvidsson and Danault taking minutes and Vilardi/JAD/Byfield/whomever playing 3C.... as @bland has said repeatedly... Trevor Moore is not a 4th line player.

There will be no taxi squad this season.

I therefore am assuming that they have budgeted to allow the possibility that at least one or two guys do have to go to Ontario and earn their NHL salaries. I’m sure they don’t want that to happen but if for example they decide Byfield or Turcotte is 100% ready they aren’t worrying about Lizotte clearing waivers, they will just have to risk it and will swallow it if needed.

Lizotte and Grundy would get claimed IMO but the rest will pass through, both may be worth a pick. Wagner and Frk have no value on the market from what I have seen. Dunno, it’s complicated and you are right it’s a great problem to have.

That's why I said I could see it happening at the start... a month. Maybe two.

But at some point if one of the prospects proves that they need to be in the lineup today instead of another player... then that replaced player has far more value as a trade piece than as a drain on financial resources and ice time in Ontario.

EDIT: and YOU may not be worried about Lizotte or Grundstrom getting claimed on waivers... but the just completed draft should make it perfectly clear the value of having extra late round draft picks to maneuver with.

If there are too many prospects ready to make the jump that the Kings are putting 3 or 4 players on waivers that have serious NHL experience.... then trade them.

I should stop before I get fired.

100% agree Jesse. I expect the Kings to have acquired 3-4 more additional later round picks by the time the dust settles.

What will we do with Latka?

Hi everyone.

For those who don’t subscribe to THG. He’s not an insider or anything, just a fan of the Game who does a nice job of keeping up with the NHL and puts out a fair amount of content, which is nice during the off-season.

I thought some of you might enjoy his Season preview for the Team during these slow news days of August, or perhaps share this with someone just learning about your Team.

I find that although THG isn’t the most exciting personality, he breaks things down nicely for those newer to the Game or looking for regular content of the non-biased variety.

Cheers,

Unlike the many East coast press people, THG actually watches some Kings games. His commentary on the King's is pretty good most of the time.
Also a fan of Vilardi.

The black cat is named Shadow.

I actually love THG's analysis

That's because he is in Vancouver. No east coast bias

Under normal circumstances I’d agree completely and I know fully you get this stuff far better than I do (you’re also more objective). However the flat cap skews everything. My take is that right now teams want cheap players on their roster and if a spot is going to be available it will go to one of their prospects as opposed to someone they claim. Those guys are on ELC’s, are waiver exempt and that they have full contract control over. They will, also have their own Lizottes that they don’t want to waive unless they have to. I just don’t see bottom 6/bubble guys on a bottom 8 team (20/21) being that high on the list of wants for many teams at all and even fewer that will want to give up picks for these guys. They are on RFA deals, have one way contracts and add in that they are not waiver exempt, it just makes them unattractive.

Which is why once we get to the point of final rosters being set and guys being waived prior to the opening night I think it’s highly doubtful anyone gets claimed. If it were me… I should add at this point I really like Grundström and Lizotte in particular and would hate losing them for nothing.

I do agree though that you are absolutely right in that they will be more concerned with protecting asset value (than I am) and waiving anyone is likely to be once we get a few weeks into the season. At that stage they will be more certain how ready guys are for promotion and players are even less likely to be claimed. As Blake has been measured in everything (which I’m ok with) he is most likely going to continue in that vein.

Thank you

He’s great. I usually watch one of his videos daily. As was said he’s no insider, and doesn’t pretend to be, but he has a decent understanding of what’s going on in the league and is a better source of game reviews than both nhl.com and TSN in my view. Great guy that seems to quite like LA also. He must live hockey 24 x 7 x 365.

These are all great points re cap and roster moves but I guess in short my belief is that this will be a genuine camp competition for spots rather than a 'we actually already have the roster set on paper' thing. Like, if Turcotte comes in and absolutely thrashes everything, I can't believe they'd send him down over one of the other guys. I'm not advocating a wholesale swap of bubble guys for prospects or anything but I want to believe the roster is more fluid, otherwise those concerns about prospects being 'blocked' gets legitimized a bit.

That's not to say I want Turcotte playing 4LW over 1C in Ontario by any means but I think you guys get the point.

Any forward making over $1m is safe I think, so that's 10 guys. Grundstrom, Lizotte, and Frk have 1 way deals, but no cap hit if they get sent down. Andersson, Tynan, and Burke on 2 way deals. Then the ELCs. You figure Vilardi has a spot since he played a full season in the NHL. That's 11 guys all but locked in. They have 28 forwards under contract that will play pro, plus 3-5 guys on AHL only deals. Even if they lose someone on waivers, they have plenty of guys to fill in.

If we lost someone to waivers, like Lizotte, I would not be stressing. We are at the contract limit (-1 if you slide Clarke) and we do not have enough spots. Only waiver players I would care about are Clague and Grundstrom, and even then its not by much. Many of these guys are on their way out after this season anyways.

I still think Blake is going to have 1 more trade coming before the waiver deadline. Probably something small, but it would likely address our crowded bottom 6.

Lizotte and Wagner are prime candidates for “good soldier” trades. Send them to Minnesota and Calgary for a fifth/sixth round pick. If they’re going to be career AHL’ers, being in their home areas will make that easier. Similar to Amadio going to the Sens and signing on with the Leafs. Frk is a guy who has shown a willingness to play at the AHL level, so he can go to the Reign.

The problem is that it won’t happen in camp with the league wide roster glut. So we’ll have to wait till February to see it happen. Right around the same time we’re throwing in the towel on the season and calling up fresh meat. And if we’re in the hunt for a playoff spot, it will be on the backs of aging vets and tweeners pulling off career years. So in that scenario, you need to get real comfortable with cheering on Lizotte, Wagner and Frk.
