I had no idea about the front office connection, and like I said in the previous version of this thread and the poll thread, MacDermid was the choice because every expansion team ever has taken a heavyweight. If you are going to pick 30 players to start a roster, you are going to take a specialty player that will excite the newest fans, be good in the room and show that the new team won't be pushed around.

It was the most logical choice. They can take Clague when waived in September (if he isn't traded first) or Athanasiou if the Kings don't qualify him.

Was fairly confident that Seattle wasn't going to take MacDermid. I'm sad to see him leave because I know he was well like in the room despite his deficiencies, but ultimately I think the Kings are more than fine with this. But again the issue crops up with the complete lack of size and grit within this roster becomes even more apparent now. There's a reason McLellan played him against Calgary and Anaheim a lot.

Also all these insiders revealing who's getting picked by Seattle is killing any sort of suspense. I don't recall this happening when Vegas was making their roster.

I believe the same thing happened with Vegas. The show was more about seeing the players in their new jersey, optics being the be all-end all, than an actual unknown draft.

can't wait to see who the new whipping boy is for next season's "______ cost us ___ games this season he's the sole reason we missed the playoffs" crowd

Im gonna miss people saying dont believe your eyes it was an illusion macdermid didnt get burned every time he was on the ice and turn the puck over constantly in his own zone hes amazing he wins staged fights at points in the game that dont have a bearing on the outcome.

sounds like you got a powerful imagination cause no one ever said those things

McD did suck on defense....but he was absolute pure entertainment on the ice because you knew there was a chance someone from the other team could go down HARD at any time -- from his body or his fist. This entertainment was pretty much all we King's fans had the past couple years since the actual on-ice team product sucked.

It's always the No. 6/7 defenseman's fault. Those 13 minutes of ice time offset the other 47.

Yeah, well when you give up a goal every 13 minutes you're on the ice...seems to me the Kings won a cup with an even worse offense.

The Kings pathetic offense cost us dozens of games this season, it’s the sole reason we missed the playoffs.
Kings only scored 95 goals at 5on5. Only Buffalo and Detroit were worse.

This is one of the reasons I'm reluctant to give up on Athanasiou (despite the problems with his game). He was our best even strength goal scorer. Take away his 10 ES goals, and the Kings were THE worst 5on5 offense in the NHL.

AA is fun to watch too, one of the few people who actually appeared to give a shit at any point during the season

if the team's gonna suck, they should at least be entertaining to watch, we're getting neither

If we would just listen to coaches and stop trying to do everything himself, and be more defensively sound positionally, he would be a very useful player.

It's frustrating.

I like that he can be a bit of a jerk out there. We can use a few.

Yea its his fault when hes a -3 in those 13 minutes and your offense is only good for 1 or 2 goals a game.
I cant believe there are some sad to see him go its insanity

It's almost as if people like homegrown high-character tough guys that at least provide something at an elite level--even if it is fighting--versus a bunch of guys that will go down in Kings history as a bunch of farts in the wind.

That said, I'm easily one of his biggest fans and I admit that he took a major step backwards last seasons which is rough since a step backward for him can see him fall off a cliff. I still think it was a coaching thing as he seemed to pinch way more often than ever before which is a recipe for disaster. When he plays a little more cautiously and stays in front of the puck, he's much more effective.

I've said all along that he isn't a guy that is going to be around when this team gets good. It isn't good yet but this upcoming year will be a move towards that goal. If he didn't get selected by Seattle, he would have maybe made the team or would have gone down to Ontario and played out the last year of his deal this season.

Guy was perfect for the tank: going to cost you some goals and help you lose games but is going to be great in the room and someone for the young kids to model themselves after when it comes to putting in the work to be an NHL player. I actually would have loved for him to be in Ontario this season but this is better for him.

Lol. So the offense is good for only 1-2 goals a game but it's still his fault.

P.S. he only played in 28 games (half the season) and was never a -3.

He wasn't the problem. He wasn't good, but it sure as **** wasn't his fault.

there are exceptions but it's pretty amusing reading "-3" like that then looking at his game log and seeing how many times even when he was -1 or -2, the kings only scored 1 or 2 goals but its somehow all his fault

This 21/22 season is the most important in Blake’s career. If the Kings don’t show significant improvement, he’s rightfully on the hot seat. He’s running out of house money to play with.

Well yea their game plan was score 1 or 2 goals and win by playing 1-3-1. You gotta be tight defensively if thats your game plan. Macdermid was not tight back there.
Im sorry that you didnt want to see him go but for me I think Grundstrom and Clague would have been worse

you think i'm like, up in arms that he was selected but i'm not.. i think he's a roleplayer that was good at his role (for the most part, save for last season) but i'm gonna defend him against people who act like he's the worst thing to happen to this team while there's huge problems surrounding him

i do think there are much better players we could have lost, so the only way i'm getting upset about this is if we gave up a pick in a side deal to protect brownie or some shit. grundstrom would have been a loss but i'm cool on clague. personally i think strand is more important to the future although clague was decent last season
