If we indeed signed AA for 1-2 years liked rumored I would expect we add a depth forward and a bottom Dman... that's it.
I think that is Blake's floor right now.

But I would hope he adds a trade to clear up roster spots to add 2 big pieces, on wing and on D.

Well the Danault talk was fun. It does really boil down to "why would anyone sign here?", although Blake might not have been interested anyways.

Lombardi had to give the extra year to Mitchell. Supposedly overpaid Scuderi with term too. Handzus was old and coming off an ACL tear so he basically paid him to rehab for a whole season.

UFAs don't come here, at least not the marquee ones. With no proof that they will be winners soon, it would probably take a massive overpayment.

If we really want a defensive shutdown center there are MUCH cheaper options out in the market right now than Danault.

Travis Zajac, Casey Cizikas, Brandon Sutter, Derek Stepan, Nick Bonino, Darren Helm.

Don't give Philip Danault 5+ million especially if it has term.

Zajac will be 37 and appears to have found a home in NYI. If anyone could pry Cizikas from there, I'd throw a bag of gold coins at him. Brandon Sutter sucks, Derek Stepan sucks, Nick Bonino sucks twice, Darren Helm isn't anything better than we can roll out.

It's a false equivalency. Danault is an absolutely elite defensive center, like Bergeron level. This isn't just 'go find a defensive depth player.'

But like I said I agree on the contract, and I think you might be saying what the below is, which is 'don't go out and overspend on defense...'

The thing is, I see teams like Boston and Pittsburgh (who also having aging centers they rely on for scoring) employ no-name guys to take away most of the heavy defensive lifting.

But the Kings have to bring in a big name UFA to do it?

Why isn't Lizotte on PK1 instead of Kopitar? AK is better at it than BL, but analytically it won't result in many more goals against over the course of the season.

I look at a guy like Wagner and think he could potentially make a great PKer. That speed will put all kinds of pressure on opposing PP players at the point. McClellan doesn't even seem interested in trying.

Last year we're playing meaningless games at the end of the season, you'd think it would be a great opportunity to try developing guys like JAD, Wagner, Lizotte as PKers / defensive specialists, instead Todd has Kopi out there running him into the ground.

I don't disagree with this at all. I think most of us agree. It should be solvable from within. But if they refuse to and have to go get an experienced guy? Danault is it.

I don't want to spend any more time defending a potential Danault signing I just think there are a lot of people painting him as if he's just some random depth guy. But the point is well taken that we should be able to soften Kopitar's minutes without another signing.

They’re going to have to acquire a lot more than Arvidsson and some of the other rumored names to get in the playoffs. Right now it looks like they’re just trying to do the bare minimum to keep Doughty quiet but it’s early.

They’re going to have to acquire a lot more than Arvidsson and some of the other rumored names to get in the playoffs. Right now it looks like they’re just trying to do the bare minimum to keep Doughty quiet but it’s early.

I think with a weak Pacific they can squeeze in with additional depth d and top 6 fwd.

They need a defenseman who can help on the PP and also some grit somewhere in the lineup. A lot of holes to fill and it will have to come via trade since no one is signing in LA.
