I'm just saying it has to be someone better than what they have and they have to move 4-5 forwards because they aren't eligible to be sent down. There's literally no more room for middle 6 or bottom 6 guys.

Unless I'm missing something, they don't have to move much in the way of forwards unless Reign players graduate. If so, then it is a good problem to have. Send them down and see if they clear.

I believe Kings need ASAP to trade or put on waivers Frk, Grundstrom, Lizotte and Wagner.
I like Grundstrom and had high hopes for him, but I do not believe in him anymore…

Great business idea. Let's go put Lizotte on waivers literally a month after signing him to an $800,000 1-year contract.

What a great way to burn money.

Iafallo – Kopitar – Arvidsson
Kempe – Vilardi – AA
Andersson – Byfield – Brown
Moore – JAD – Wagner
Extra: Lemieux, Grundstrom, Lizotte

This doesn't include guys competing for a spot like Kupari, Thomas, Turcotte, and the new Russian kid.

Spending massive amounts of cash to try and extend Kopitar's career is a waste. You might as well just get a cheap d first C and have him eat into Kopitar's PK mins.
If you are going to pay up on a guy it had better be for different reasons. It's got to be a true impact player.

This is where i'm at currently. Unless the plan is to start trading a bunch (like 3-5+) of our great/good center prospects for other positions. Ultimately, I think there are better ways of getting where we want to go.

Forgot Lias in my earlier exercise. Slot Byfield down to Ontario to start and put Lizotte in the lineup. Now I've got 14 forwards. Add seven defenseman and the two goalies and I'm at 23 for a full roster, right? Only guy being not making it is the Russian guy. Sign Danault and now it is two guys not making it. Try to trade them for something or see if they clear waivers. Good chance someone will trade for them later on due to injuries or whatever. If nobody takes them for free and on low contracts, then they are trash and not worth the contract given to them or traded for and you just have to deal with it.

In regards to Danault, the argument about term and cap hit is valid but not wanting to do it due to having to possibly waive Blake Lizotte is not a valid argument. In my opinion, anyways.

If you are worried about LD, the Kings can try to sign Mike Reilly for half the term and aav that Danault turned down from Montreal.

What years do you think would Danault earn his contract with the Kings? Let's assume at least the 6x6 contract that he turned down although it would probably have a higher aav or an extra year for LA to sign him. I think he would be the 2c this coming year and maybe part of the following season. I think he would get passed by Vilardi, Turcotte, and/or Byfield in 22 or 23 and would no longer earn his contract. That contract then becomes an anchor and prevents the Kings from getting what they need to contend.

What evidence is there that PD turned down that offer? For all we know, it is just a rumour (Canadian spelling). From what I see, players are now looking at total dollars received much more than AAV. In other words, they will trade AAV for more term (see Nugent-Hopkins) or vice versa. Assume you are correct and that PD was looking at collecting $36mm+ over the next six years. With our cap space and the fact that we have no massive raises that need to be handed out in the next couple of seasons, why not sign PD for a higher AAV and shorter term? This allows him to test the market again in 2-3 years and potentially earn more than he would by signing long term now? This also would get his contract off the books by the time his replacements have arrived. I know it would be vast over payment, but why not $27-$30mm over three years?

In the what if world:

Sign Danault long term at 5.5. frees up another center prospect to trade to Buffalo.

we end up

Eichel
Kopitar
Danault
JAD

27 mil of if cap space tied up in centers. In a non cap world that would be a sexy move but in a cap work it would be hell.

For the next few years am looking forward to

Kopitar
Byfield
Vilardi
JAD

12.5 million in a cap work.

spend money on Defence.
Looks good in the bigger picture minus Eichel.I just don't see him being traded for currently with his medical issues that have been rumored and assets to get him.

Doubt Byfield makes the team.He might get his call ups,but don't see his starting the season.

Here's the thing with a guy like Lizotte. He's been a King for over 100 games now, almost zero time in Ontario. They know what he is. He was a RFA this summer. They still re-signed him, knowing what potential free agents were likely to be out there.

Now, they signed him cheap. They can send him down with no cap hit left over, just paying him NHL money to be on the Reign.

This just inflates future contracts around the league.

Byfield can handle NHL opposition. I don't think the AHL is going to do much for him, not a lot of structure at that level.

What's this talk of Byfield being in the AHL?

Is the CHL season cancelled? Why would these CHL players be allowed to play in the AHL? Maybe I'm missing something here.

Whackadoodle idea to free up short-term cap space for Danault (or another team's cap-dump tethered to a big-name trade acquisition): (1) Trade Quick away (no salary retention) to a contender. You won't get anything remotely worthwhile back, but the return isn't really the point; (2) Sign Jones for a two-year cheap-a$$ deal. Obviously he is not the "solution" in net, but he's an almost- semi-viable starter in case Petersen proves to not be the answer, either (basically, you're "buying time" with him); and, (3) Trade Brown (probably at the trade deadline to a contender) for a cost-controlled youngster and a pick.

^I probably wouldn't even do this given the opportunity, but given what else has transpired this summer, it's not THAT insane (and I'll pre-empt the "But the team would SUCK!" argument: everyone's seen the standings the last three seasons, right??)

I agree with the first half but disagree on the second half of your statement. He showed great improvements in the AHL last year and I think that would continue. He would also develop in the NHL though as well.

CHL is granting a one-time exception that CHL players who played 20+ AHL games due to COVID last season can play in the AHL this season.

Nothing finalized, but that's the gist.

Edit: that said, Byfield handled the NHL well. Think he should be in the NHL

Sweet. I didn't even know that.

I would look at it as an investment in developing the youth in Ontario...it's kind of like when Luff or Frk are down there (forgot the latter in my earlier exercise too haha). I don't think any of the one-way guys sent down would be down there all year if they passed through waivers to start the season. It is true that their one-way contract status makes it a bit tougher to be claimed.

All that said: Blake isn't going to sweat a long-term asset to what he's building over what to do with Lemieux, Wagner, Lizotte etc. Wagner would be the biggest "problem" since he has two years left but it still isn't much of a problem.

Sweet. I didn't even know that.

Yeah. I no longer have Byfield penciled in as a for sure opening night starter.

I don't think it makes sense to slide him another full year but they could. Would be wild for a 2OA though.

He'll still probably be there opening night but it is great to have the flexibility. AHL will be better next season from a talent perspective than it was last year.

We all know the word is the Kings still want to add another forward and dman.

I'm not concerned about having too many players in the mix.

It sounds like there's going to be a lot of competition in camp to make the team. That's a good thing. If the Kings end up losing someone on waivers, it won't really matter IMO.

They made an exception for players who played 20 games in the AHL last year that they could play in the AHL this year.

There was a tweet posted about it but nothing final....yet As of today Byfield is our 3C next year.
If the Kings don't feel comfortable with Vilardi-Byfield-JAD, they can move Vilardi to wing and add a Vet 2C.

Also I think these Danualt to LA rumors may make sense depending on term and how they feel about Vilardi as a long term 2C on this team. I would't mind seeing QB with Vilardi on the same line. If they click it will be the making of our first line in 3 years. Some centers need to move to wing, it's just a matter of time.
