Halak signs for 1.5 with the Rangers, that's another backup goalie deal I wouldn't have minded along with Samsonov and his stats have still been pretty consistent for his age

The forward deals given out so far give me hope that we might be able to circle back on Perron.

Copp: $5.625M x 5 (takes him to 32)

Trocheck: $5.625M x 7 (takes him to 35)

E Kane: $5.125M x 4 (takes him to 34)

Giroux: $6.5M x 3 (takes him to 37)

The big two fish are still out there, but that is a lot of the 2nd tier guys that Perron would have been competing with. None of those numbers are ludicrous or suggest that the Pavelski contract that drew him to Dallas will be available. I think that is an overpay for Giroux, but NHL GMs are clearly all still in love with him. I'm happy to see that he wasn't able to wrangle a 4 year deal from anyone at that AAV. Looking at these deals, I'm not sure that Perron is going to find many offers north of $5M x 3.

He'll still have to take a discount to play here (which was clearly Army's stance since day 1), but it is starting to look like it wouldn't mean leaving quite as much money on the table as he may have expected. It would necessitate a move to fit in a reasonable discount, but I do think it is possible. Definitely not the most likely outcome, but these signings are about the best case scenario if Army's plan was to bank on the forward UFA market being softer than expected.

I'm sure we will, but as of now I expect him to land in either Detroit (seem to be building to win soon) or Calgary (as a "consolation prize" for losing Gaudreau).

I think Greiss has higher upside but his downside is that of Chris Johnson. I'm pretty meh on the Greiss deal but I wouldn't have been thrilled with Halak either.

Either way we're still shopping in the bargain bin of NHL goalies. So I think it does come down to marginal differences among the available names, I think the familiarity of Halak is what leads me to liking a guy like him over a Griess at the end of the day.

Where do you see the cap coming from (genuinely asking, not rhetorical)? With Leddy signed we don't have enough to even make a $4M offer, much less getting into those numbers.

Pretty sure the whole point of Armstrong's NMC/NTC line in the sand is that guys with NTCs can be moved if Armstrong wants them moved.

Yes and the player with a NTC can refuse to be traded to a team they don't want to be traded to. You can't just say that Carolina chose not to trade for Krug without knowing if Krug is actually even available and if he would waive for Carolina. You're making it out like Krug is bad.

I hear you there. I don't think there was a goalie we were going to sign where I would've felt excited. We were a bit spoiled with the Binny/Husso tandem.

I'm making it out like 5x6.5 remaining is way too much considering you don't have to shelter the 4x4 guy but you do have to shelter the 5x6.5 guy at the same position. Leddy is the superior second pairing player. And Krug is absolutely not a top pairing defender. And I'm making it out like NTCs are not really a huge deal, considering the multiple reports that indeed Armstrong has been shopping Krug and was talking to Don Waddell on the floor of the draft and Carolina clearly needed a PP QB after losing Hamilton and then trading DeAngelo.

They also have Skeji and Slavin on the LHD side. So they were most likely looking for a RHD

Scandella or Barby. Neither of whom need to be moved prior to signing Perron. They would just need to get moved before the start of the season, which should be more than doable even if teams know that we have to shed space. Barby absolutely has positive value. I think Scandella can be shed without giving up anything of real consequence as well. And we can always play the 21 or 22 man roster game for a bit to buy time if things are really close.

We've got about $2.9M in space with 21 guys on the projected roster (I'm penciling Neighbours). Moving Barby or Scandella gets that space up to $5.15-6.17M with 20 guys on the roster. Moving both gives you about $8.5M in cap space with 19 guys on the roster. There is cheap depth behind Scandella for the last couple D spots on the roster. I think everyone would agree that Perron would be an upgrade over Barby in the forward group.

But all of this can be worked out over the next few months. Perron wouldn't put us over the summer cap and neither should be such an albatross to move that we can't bank on getting cap compliant by the start of camp. We couldn't comfortably move Scandella until we knew that we had someone to play LD minutes. We have that question answered now. We shouldn't move Barby until we know that we aren't losing another forward. Signing Perron would answer that question.

There is cap flexibility to fit Perron with what Army has done today. The question now is whether Amry and Perron can find common ground toward his value as a Blue.

They have Slavic and skeji on the left side. They needed a RHD and they got one
