Suppose it's better than negotiations ending and him going to the market.

I don't understand the desire to keep Leddy. He looked "alright" but, he was replacing a rotation of guys who weren't good. Who is going to make room for him? Surely running 7 D isn't the Blues plan. Scandella must be getting dumped

I think people are forgetting how effective he was in the playoffs when he was in an ultra defensive usage. And his transition ability against a team like Colorado with an aggressive forecheck. He's not necessarily a game-changer on the backend, but to compare to the center situation, he's very much a Bozak type acquisition, where it solidifies a middle 6 role and he has the ability to play in all situations. And depending on what move is made to create the space, I could easily see him being the Bozak move, with the ROR LD move coming after.

Options are:

Perunovich starts in the minors because he has 37 NHL games left before he has to be exposed to waivers.

Mikkola is exposed to waivers.

Carry 8 dmen.

Someone is moved, whether it's Scandella, Krug, Mikkola, or Perunovich.

I think at this point he may be the best option on defense. We know he can fit into our style of play and he was pretty good for us.

There's no realistic upgrades on the FA market. And in looking at the trade market....the Flyers are basically in the same situation as us, where they are apparently looking to dump salary rather than add it, so that makes it hard for us to acquire one of their d-men.

That leaves Chychrun as the main trade option but his price is too high. The Blues aren't going to give up Neighbours or Bolduc, they are very high on them and will be counting on them in the near future, especially if Perron leaves (and maybe Tarasenko in a year). Those two could become crucial very soon.

So, at least with Leddy you can run a decent top 4 with him, Parayko, Krug, and Faulk. I agree though that we still need to work on dumping Scandella.

Fair point. I was just hoping they would go for more of a defensive minded defenseman. I don't value Leddy's transition game that highly but Army knows better than I.

I agree with this. Of the available LHD most are too expensive cap wise or assets wise. Keeping Leddy is good transition and value wise if we can move Scandella

I would disagree that Leddy was just “alright”. He completely solidified our backend IMO. The Blues were missing a top-4 LD all season and Leddy really helped.

That said, it all comes down to fit, price and term. I’d be all for Leddy returning but it has to make sense.

I don’t really care if adding Leddy (or someone else of his caliber) gives the Blues 8 d-men. Of the 7 they already have, only 3 of them belong anywhere near the top 2 pairings. They desperately need a legit top-4 d-man and it pretty much needs to be a lefty too. So that’s what makes Leddy such a good fit. Fix the “problem” of 1 too many D later.

I'd just argue that he stabilized the back end because of how bad of a shape it was in when he got here. I think most any decent player they brought in would have stabilized it. His rumored asking price is too much for what he brought in my opinion but it appears I'm in the minority with that thought. Hopefully I'm wrong!

That’s a fair point. And I’ll even admit that I was a little underwhelmed when I heard it was Leddy that the Blues were adding at the deadline…but he was way better than I was expecting.

I guess my question is, if not Leddy, who? I think it’d have to be a trade as the only other decent LD I’m seeing as a UFA is DeKeyser, and I’d definitely want Leddy over him.

Manson signed 4.5 for 4 years. That's about the max I would do for Leddy.

Greiss was good the previous 3 seasons before this one, so if he's cheap and 1-year, I'm good with it. I liked the Comrie idea, but he might be a little too expensive. Greiss does remind me a bit of Chad Johnson though, so hopefully Hofer would be ready if needed.

That's another Scandella in the making. 4 years on a 31 year old whose main positive attribute is his skating. He is a bit better than Scandella, but that is a bit more money and he has the potential to get a lot worse quickly.

I sure hope the Blues would not go 4 x 4.5 on Leddy. His best attribute is skating and once that goes the cliff is coming quickly. If you could get him for 2 years with eyes on a bigger prize, sure, but that doesn't seem likely.

I didn't watch much (if any) of Greiss last season, but I wouldn't be wild about the idea of him as the undisputed backup. He turns 37 this year and his numbers dropped sharply in Detroit last season. Maybe that was the team in front of him, but they weren't any good the year before either. That sounds more like age regression than being the victim of a poor team.

If it's an AAV that can be fully buried in the AHL then I won't be too nervous. I would hope that we then circle back to Lindgren and say 'we'll give you a 1 way deal at $1M and all you have to do to earn the backup job is beat out a 36 year old who posted an .891 last season.'

Yeah I'd rather go younger in net. I don't care if Lindgren is less proven, I'm willing to give him a chance.

I’m willing to give Greiss a chance. He was bad last year no doubt, but he’s been a good goalie for the majority of his career.

My biggest thing is making sure the cap hit is able to be buried should Hofer force his way to the NHL.
