Shane Wright is falling victim to overscouting. He's been seen as the consensus #1 pick basically since he was 15 years old to the point where scouts are searching for anything possible to pick apart about his game.
I don't think he's going to be in the McDavid/Matthews/MacKinnon tier of #1 overall pick forwards but I absolutely think he's going to project into a ~70 point two way beast and that will be tremendous for Montreal to pair with Nick Suzuki.
Wright is going to be very good player and I would still pick him 1st overall, but I do think Cooley and Salfkovsky have closed the gap. Cooley is a more offensive flair Beniers and Salfkovsky is looking to be a better Rantanen. If those comparisons are right then these two are extremely good players and you have Wright who lacks top-level dynamic skill for a first overall pick. Some of it is overscouting as you mentioned, but a problem, especially in Canada you get these lads who play high-level AAA and get hyped as 13 year olds as Matthew Savoie did (he's going to be awesome).
Nolan Patrick is a perfect example of the description you're talking about, this lad was able to enter the WHL a year earlier due to a unique birthday and was hyped as the top pick for four to five years before his actual draft. I had concerns about his game when I watched him for like five years and even without the injuries, I am not sure he was ever going to develop into a top five type of player. He still will develop into a useful and good player, but this hype carried him all the way to the point that Flyers drafted him over Makar lol. That wasn't a problem of overscouting by any means, but consensus hype dating back to when he was first becoming a teenager. I do think there is some problems that plague amateur scouting and it is consensus, I feel some teams pick players 1st overall strictly because everyone has them #1 to appease the fanbase instead of conducting some risk and drafting whomever they feel is the best player available. Wright being given exceptational status will only exacerbate thing as well.
