Not as simple as that. Don't you think most teams in the league would have offered more if they were able? That's a steal for Vancouver.

An entire country knew Pietrangelo was in Vegas the past couple days and it wasn’t to play blackjack. Schmidt’s name has been our there for two days. 20 teams in the league he could be dealt too and he couldn’t say a peep. Vegas gm should be fired for that deal

Agreed to Vancouver? He had 20 teams they could send Schmidt without even so much as a courtesy call. Even if 14 of them were in the West, that still left 6 Eastern teams. Schmidt isn't even a west coast guy, he grew up in Minnesota.

Sweeney never even had a conversation with Vegas tonight about Schmidt. I'd put money on it. He has his plan for the D and it's to roll with the group as it currently stands. I don't even dislike his plan to be honest, but if a D-man Schmidt's caliber becomes available out of the blue really and you can get him for such a low price, a good GM makes adjustments to his "plan" awfully quick. Especially when your core group is nearing the end of it's lifespan as effective pro hockey players.

It doesn’t look like they’re offering long term deals to free agents, makes me think Schmidt’s term was an issue for them

I kind of feel like Vegas just up and said f*** it, no salary retention on our end, lets just do it so we can sign our guy.

Name one that might be available

I’m disgusted by this offseason.

I hear you. So far it seems like all of Sweeney's plans have backfired so my confidence isn't high he's going to be able to pull something off.

That said, there are guys rumored to be available, Noah Hanifin, Brady Skjei, OEL still...

My best guess is that other teams wanted some salary retention on Schmidt and Vegas wants as much money out as possible and Vancouver took them up for the offer at full salary.

Nah, Schmidt became a roadblock.

Basically it's Schmidt for AP and a 3rd

True, but I read that the Pietrangelo contract signed today is registered effective tomorrow and the cap space (even with the off-season overage) had to be moved tonight to be cap compliant.

If anything, their public courting of Pietrangelo killed their leverage and other GMs could do the math, it was safe to assume Pietrangelo's cap hit was going to be north of 8.5 million, and see Vegas would have to move someone immediately.

I think we're on plan X or Y at this stage.

I'm definitely not against getting a guy like Hanifin or Skjej. But keep in mind we'll be losing assets to acquire either one of those guys + most likely Gryz to expansion. It would hurt a lot less if we were able to bring in that asset while also bringing in a UFA that fits, but we are striking out bad.

Losing Krug and Chara. Most likely losing Rask and Krejci next year for nothing. But at least we bring in Craig Smith a few years too late. Sweeney's not looking good right now. Riding a lot on his drafts finally starting to see dividends, but I feel like all the prospects lack a high end element that this team needs.

I find it hard to believe that all these guys being moved/signed haven't looked at us and said, "I can win there now, in a hockey town and with legendary history to boot with great leadership and one of the most talented young goal scorers in the league. Oh, and the best goalie or close enough. Bergeron had to talk Smith into it? Why? What we have here is a serious planning problem.

Top pairing defenceman signed to a more than reasonable deal in a spot we desperately require help. The cost in a trade? Almost nothing.

What a nightmare that would have been.

yeah I mean I would have had no problem with getting him, they just may not want to pay him 6 mill at age 33/34

but then again they could easily just flip him if the window closes while he’s here (Provided he’s still good) so I don’t get it unless he specifically does not like Boston for whatever reason

The problem with your plan is playing the kids with the roster we have is still a playoff team. Likely one that can at least win a round.

I'm fine with this offseason if no more moves are made. We got a scoring winger, and we've had 3 LD prospects knocking on the door of the NHL for two seasons now. Honestly think the kids are our best option at D.

Let's see what we've got, then load up at the trade deadline for a playoff run. Should be an active deadline as teams prep for the expansion draft.

I'm OK if no more moves are made. However, it would be even better if the B's add a solid partner for McAvoy.

NATE SCHMIDT FOR A f***ING 3rd. WHY SWEENEY. f***ING WHY DIDNT YOU OFFER UP MORE.
Sweeney has to be the most passive GM ever. They could have offered a 2nd or a 3rd + say Zboril , just beat that offer, Schmidt would have been a nice fit here, but no DS will wait for the deadline and overpay for some old has been. If I owned this team Mr. Sweeney and Mr. Neely would have been gone a long time ago, we have the worst front office and scouting staff in the entire NHL.

I think it is the best option also, we are saying the same thing. If is works fantastic but if not and we drop out of the playoffs it is not bad either because they may actually get in a position to draft a gamebreaker. The kids are ready and should not be blocked by old and injured guys whose best days are well gone, it is no longer 2013.

When I say kids I do not mean all of them but Stud, Zboril, Vlader, Frederic and Seny. Use the cap we have now to get a decent top pairing guy to play with Mac. Time to sink or swim and stop getting over 30 retreads, they need to break that cycle. Bergy, Rask and Krech are near the end, it has to happen now or we become Detroit.

Perfection line

Jake-Coyle-Kase
Kuraly-Frederic-Wags
Seny/Lindholm

LW: Marchand, Debrusk, Ritchie, Bjork, Blidh
RW: Pasta, Kase, Smith, Wagner, Senyshyn
C: Bergy, Krejci, Coyle, Kuraly, Frederic, Studnicka
RD: McAvoy, Carlo, Clifton, Lauzon, Kampfer
LD: *Gryzz, *Chara, Moore, Vaak, Zboril,

There's guys in positions that clearly are redundant. Kuraly/Wagner, who I like, have value and can be replaced by Studnicka, Senyshyn or Frederic on the 4th line.
Our LW desperately needs an improvement. Hoffman or Dadonov would be great. Who else is out there that we could get via trade that makes us better? Is Gaudreau available? What would he cost? Him on our 2nd line, not expected to be the man, would be pretty sweet.
My forward lines look like this opening night:
Marshy-Bergy-Pasta
trade-Krejci-Kase
Debrusk-Coyle-Smith
Ritchie-Studnicka-Senyshyn
Frederic
Out: Kuraly, Wagner, Bjork(3.3 million)

I take Chara back 10-10 times especially now we missed out on OEL and Schmidt. I roll with the following:
Gryzz-McAvoy
Chara-Carlo
Vaak/Zboril-Lauzon
Clifton/Miller

[email protected] million
Chara-@ 2.0 million
[email protected] million
Hoffman/Dadonov/Trade- @5 million

Makes me sick we're gonna miss out on yet another "unprecedented amount of movement" off-season
And the cost to be a buyer is essentially nothing. Maybe teams don’t want to deal with us. Who knows but this looks brutal at this point
