Signing BG to an extension would be a terrible idea. This team couldn't win with BG, Tatar, Domi, Danault, Armia, all at under 5M , 4M, 3M or whatever. Now, bergein is talking about extending them with raises? Whaajoke.

No wonder this team is going nowhere. The Rangers were trending down faster than MTL. They announced publicly that they wanted to rebuild. Traded away a bunch of players including Mcdo. Now, they're trending up and surpassed MTL already. They'll buyout their HOF goalie and probably land Pietrangelo. In Habs land, the circle of mediocrity continues...yay whoppidy doo, 5'8 board-kissing, shooting -at- the- goalies -crest- no -matter -what Gallagher re-signed for 6M for 6 years at age 28:thumbu:

Do not compare the Rangers and Habs. NYR is able to attract big name UFA like Panarin. MTL: no.

Gallagher will get a big contract. If not in MTL, elsewhere for sure. Many, many teams are looking for players like Gally on their top-six.

You know why ? Because MB knows already that he cannot get the big UFA fishes. He signed two solid no-nonsense players that will help the team. He still has lots of money and assets to bring good players.

He knows that already? How do you know that he knows?

love Gallagher but the habs should let another team over pay for his services. His best days are coming to an end
Paying him 6-7 million to maybe get 50 pts isn’t good economics when you have such a small and not talented top 6

Hopefully MB isn't as surprised as I was to find out he's a UFA

Edmundson is a LHD man. Soucy is a RHD man. Soucy is not as physical or intimidating than Edmundson. Two different types of d-men.

Soucy is left handed i'm pretty sure

You're right. But different in their style even if Soucy is 6'5" + Soucy has only like 60 games of NHL experience at 26 y.o.

Michel Bergeron came up with a not too bad idea the other day: Galchenyuk. He would not cost us much. He's still young. Might as well try it, bring him along and it could spark something in him coming back here. Who knows.

Soucy is better than Edmundson defensively and would cost like $3m less. It's not that hard to find physically intimidating defensemen who are also good. Edmundson is not one of them.

Soucy has played on avg 15 min a game behind the big four of the Wild.... Easy when you play against opponents' bottom liners most of the time.

I wouldn't do it. What this team needs is a physical presence. There was a time when I thought Galchenyuk might have it in him to play with power, but that never materialized.

I prefer trying for guys like Killorn, Saad or maybe Puljujarvi. Or a solid vet with decent skills like Maroon for lower lines.

WTF ? No way Galchenyuk will be brought back by MB. Have you seen his last two seasons with Arizona, Pittsburg and Minny ? He was invisible during the last Playoffs too. Let's bring back Nathan Beaulieu too ?

Soucy only spent like ~10% less time against top liners than Edmundson did, and the "Soucy is better defensively than Edmundson" comes from his RAPM, which adjusts for quality of competition.

Soucy at 26 years old with 58 NHL games under his belt has proven to be a better defender than Joel Edmundson who is a year removed from being the #4 D on a Stanley Cup winner.....???

The bias is strong in this one.

No doubt I would prefer all the players you mentioned but I'm saying why not. If we pay him next to nothing, no big deal, we don't have to play him if it doesn't work out.

My thinking is that it may give sparks to his game by coming back.

Stats means nothing. It also depends of so many other factors like players with whom you are on the ice, your goalies, etc...

RAPM accounts for all the things you listed.

Soucy: -0.087 xGA/60 (82nd percentile)
Edmundson: +0.053 xGA/60 (25th percentile)

If you've watched Edmundson play, you'd know that he's terrible defensively.

Also he was used as a #5/6 D more than he was used as a #4 D on STL's cup run.
