I think another season like the last, and a flat cap, or possibly a cap that even goes down, and Landy isn't getting $7M, let alone more than that. Makar isn't getting $9M either. Not that both aren't worth it, but there just won't be the $ available. I say both get short term deals for less, with the promise that once things return to normal, and the cap goes up, that they will get more.
I think they'll benefit from some team friendly deals for UFA middle sixers looking to win a Cup too.
Other competitive teams benefit from deals for these kind of players every year. The Avs just haven't been a draw until last year, so they've had to either pay market price, or over pay guys to bring them in.
44 year old Joe ThorntonYup, I don't think we will have too much depth issues after paying our core. We will either replace them with our prospects (ideal) with the backup plan of veterans looking to win a cup (i.e. a Zajac?, Hjalmarsson, our own Erik Johnson in a few years).
If you think Landy will only get 6.5... boy are you gonna be disappointed.Yup. Landeskog wasn't worth 7 this past year and Makar is a RFA. Sakic is a tough negotiator when it comes to long term contracts. I honestly LOVE all of his long term deals (5+ years). IMO any deal that impacts the re-signing of our franchise player (Mack); will be prudent and below market value. See Girard (1 mill discount), Rantanen (1.5 mill discount), Toews (~0.5 mill discount). So I can see Landeskog getting 6.5; Makar getting 8 on deals past Mack's. Prudent contracts that are slightly less than comparables.
Pure guesses:
Landy 50M total - 7 years, ~7,14 per year
Makar 63M total -7 years 9 per year
I'm optimistic.
I don't think those are unrealistic, but the Avs would need to get Makar's signature before Hughes' puts his down in Vancouver.
Let's hope that Benning doesn't go nuts.

Or they're unfortunate to not have another year of Makar on an ELC. Having an extra ~$8m in capspace would be nice to have in 2021/22.The Avs are fortunate that they played Makar in the playoffs and burned a year of his ELC.
The only thing that’s going to help them in that negotiation is proven years in the NHL.

Yup. It’d be a lot different if we were protecting Kaut or Timmons. But as it is, Makar is one of the best players in the league and we are a better team with him so it made sense to get him in ASAP.And another protection slot... but really what's done is done. Makar a great young defensemen who is worthy of resetting the market. It is about the best type of 'problem' to have as a team.

I get the feeling the Makar/Hughes contract comparisons are going to look a lot like how Rantanen and Marner did towards each otherLet's hope that Benning doesn't go nuts.
I also think that it was extremely important to see what Makar could do on the big stage last year, even if it was only 10 games. Remember, at that time we were still considering re-signing Tyson. The decision to trade him became a lot easier after we saw what Makar could do.Yup. It’d be a lot different if we were protecting Kaut or Timmons. Makar’s agent response.I can see Sakic making an argument that Makar will be making an extra ~7-9 mil because he decided to burn a year off Makar's ELC.
Makar’s agent response.
Bartlett isn't as big as the others, but they are every bit as cutthroat.Maybe Makar's agent is his dad who's a nice and humble guy who just likes hearing Joe talk.
