Rumor: 2020-21 Trade Rumours and FA Part VIII: Intra-Playoff Edition?

With Jones there's always the danger of being another OEL type of defenseman who peaked very early and has been living on his reputation for a long time past that.

AJ on the podcast was saying that Jones has been on a steady decline for the past 3 years, each year being worse than the previous one. I wasn't paying attention to the numbers but if true, that'd throw the "he sucked this year because Covid is distracting" speculations out the window.

I'd not want to extend him with an AAV based on his past reputation. Let's see what he can do next season first.

Perhaps he was bad because of Columbus/Covid situation or maybe he's just OEL 2.0.

No, but we don't need the production. We need to not blow the leads we get. I believe a more defensive player will make us a better team.

Edit: I am mistaken about our cap situation. I thought we were in a much tighter spot. Cap friendly has us with 25 million going into next season.

Makar 9.5 - 10
Landeskog 7.5 - 8.5
Gru 6?
Saad 6?
Jost 2.5 - 3.5?
I really have no idea what Saad and Gru will be looking for, but I do know that this will be their last big paychecks in the NHL. So I doubt they'll take much if any of a discount.

We still need to get rid of 2 of Graves/JTC/Dong/Bura though.
So you're pinning us blowing leads on Andre Burakovsky, and that's it? Or should we be getting rid of Landeskog, too? Since he caused a goal against the same way Burakovsky did.

Who the hell is going to score beyond the top line if he's moved and we get a more defensive forward to take his place?

Brandon Saad will not make 6M per season, and I will personally fly you anywhere in the world 1st class if Tyson Jost even sniffs that dollar figure. The guy shouldn't even get a raise from his current contract, let alone that figure.

Seth Jones is most definitely not OEL 2.0. Seth Jones can actually defend, and defend very well.
I wasn't refering to his style but to peaking early and living on a reputation when you're away from the spotlights.

Jones isn’t declining at 26… He’s on a terrible hockey team, and he’s obviously disgruntled. These types of guys are almost always worth the risk. People were writing Alec Martinez off before VGK traded for him, now look.

As for the off-season, I don’t expect much change. Kadri will he used to bridge Newhook into the 2C role, and if Newhook is successful then Kadri walks.

SEA takes Graves, Trade Compher for a 4th/5th. That gives you significant cap relief.

Grub is getting at least $6M. Jones isn’t coming here though.

Seth Jones is so good at hockey yet is questioned cause his analytics arnt good is so bizarre to me, I mean you watch him for 1 game even you can see how he can control a game

If the Avs can't afford Jones then I'd prefer to see something like this. Not sure about how an OS works but if they could use it then I'd do something like this.

Landeskog - 7M
MacKinnon - 6.3M
Rantanen - 9.25M
Saad - 5M
Danault - 5M
Burakovsky - 4.9M
Nichushkin - 2.5M
Kadri - 4.5M
Newhook - 1M
LOC - 1M
Cizikis - 3M
Jost - 1M
O'Brien - 1M

Toews - 4.1M
Makar - 9.25M
Girard - 5M
Johnson - 1M
Byram - 1M
Timmins - 1.25M
Oleksiak - 2.5M

Merzlikins - 4M
Francouz - 2M
Total - 81.55M

Lose Graves to ED. Use Donskoi, Compher, 1st and prospects (one of Bowers/Kaut/Ranta)/(Barron/Helleson) for Merzlikins and a second round pick. It's an overpayment but the Avs need to lose the salary and restructure the bottom lines. Use the second round pick to offer sheet Cizikis. My thinking on acquiring Cizikis is that this is like the Raiders drafting Ray Guy as the underrated kicker. Sleeper player in his position, extremely valuable because he makes the fourth line a weapon. You don't want to use an OS to target their top players because it'd be prohibitively expensive. Use the OS to target the lower valued guy on the fourth line that can step up and fill in as needed say on the third line in case Newhook struggles after Kadri leaves. Then trade Kadri by next season's TD and use the money to acquire another 3C or 2RHD or fill in or a pick as needed. Jost can step in as 4C if Cizikis needs to move up and fill in at 3C. Buyout EJ and then resign him for the league minimum on a year to year.

You have four solid offensive lines. I'd say the 3rd line is the weakest on paper.

Landeskog - MacKinnon - Rantanen
Saad - Danault - Burakovsky
Nichushkin - Kadri - Newhook
LOC - Cizikis - Jost
O'Brien

Toews - Makar
Girard - EJ/Oleksiak/Byram
EJ/Oleksiak/Byram - Timmins

If Jones want to only be traded here, that would reduce the pieces we have to send back.
It didn’t necessarily say he wants to be traded here. I think it only mean that he’s only consider an extension here. Otherwise, he’s simply going UFA.

I still want Danault. Graves to Seattle. Trade Compher or Donskoi. Danault suddenly becomes affordable. Keep Kadri. Need insurance.

I just don't see Kadri being happy at 3C, especially not on a contract year. When he got downgraded to 3C in Toronto he answered by having a terrible season..just like when he lost his spot on PP1 here.

And when he plays like shit for an extended period of time he does something stupid that gets him suspended.

There are blatant similarities between this season and his last season in Toronto.

This sounds like exactly what happened this year.

got no choice. We need another reliable middle 6 C. Can’t rely on Kadri staying in the games.

First off, he played like dogshit all year. Second if you don't want to get demoted don't do stupid shit that negatively impacts your coworkers.

He lost his spot on PP1 early in the season and his response was to play much worse. I'd call it a coincidence if it wasn't for what happened previously in Toronto.

Kadri has a huge ego. He's not going to be happy playing 3C on his contract year. We need to trade his ass.

He looked horrible before that. Hence why he got bumped from the top PP.
