Does he have the offensive abilities to be a 2C? I see he had roughly the same assist play as Kadri, but doesn't seem to be a threat to score himself. Who were his wingers this season?
Put this guy on a line with Burakovsky and watch magic happen. Not only will Danault compensate for Burakovsky's defensive limitations, but he can feed him the puck routinely - something Kadri refuses to do.

I also don't get the "Danault doesn't produce enough" arguments.

Take this season out because to me, everyone this season had numbers altered due to the schedule + opponents.

18-19 and 19-20, Kadri scored a combined 107 points. Danault scored 108. So does Nazem Kadri also not produce enough offense to be the 2C on this team?

I have no idea. That's why I asked the question. I don't agree with not counting this season. Everyone was in the same boat and he played easier competition than normal, I'd guess.

I'm definitely a fan and he'd be great here. I bitched about Kadri the whole season and am even more frustrated with him now.

How has Kadri played in prior contract years? Trying to figure out what kind of uptick we may expect.

Disagree on this year. Just a quick glance at Danault's career numbers show the two teams he has statistically produced the least amount against are Toronto and Calgary - two teams he played several times this past season.

I'm not gonna sit here and make excuse after excuse for the guy - obviously you have to produce at the end of the day. However, I believe all players this season in terms of individual performances should be taken with grains of salt.

He's a good play driver and facilitator but not a great finisher. Pair him him up with Bura and they'd work really well together I think. Than situationally you can pair him up with Nuke and they might literally be the best shutdown forward pair in the league.

The one question with Danault is how long do we expect him to be an elite defensive forward while putting up 40-50 pts a season. If he can maintain that play for the duration of his contract (5-6 years) he's worth it. However, if either falls off, it's the type of contract that could look ugly.

Danault had a poor start this season with the distracting contract talk. Same thing happened last time....he seems to underperform on contract years.

Also he lost his linemate Gallagher for a good chunk of that season and Tatar had a piss poor year himself.

I would prefer to see Danault at 3C, targeting more firepower at 2C (on the record for Hertl). Need a 1-2 punch like the days of 19 and 21. Yelle was a helluva good defensive C and Denault reminds me of him. Then give me nuisance 4th line.

With how he plays, I think he's got a good 4+ years in him. Even if his offense dries up, he's always going to have great defense and I'd imagine he falls into more of a 30 point elite defensive center in his mid 30s.

Personally, my plan would be grab Danault and use that as a high minute shutdown 2nd line. Maybe Nuke and Burkie with him. Nuke for forecheck and defense, Burkie for some firepower and transition. Demote Kadri to a 3C where he can be a one man show that makes that more of a 2nd line when he's on. Then hopefully we get to see some time with Newhook at center to see if he could take over a middle 6 role there. If not, you'd ideally target more of a 2nd line sort of guy at the deadline next year (moving Kadri to wing or out). If he can, you could let Kadri walk after a run.

Kaut and a third for Patrick? Clearly Bednar doesn’t like Kaut and Patrick could end up being perfect for the 3C and bump Jost down to 4C. Patrick had good faceoff numbers and if he can get his health together has potential to become a solid 2/3C

Is it just me that doesn't want Eichel? I don't think our team needs to be more top-heavy with one dimensional players. Is Eichel sound defensively? I didn't think he was.

I do think we need to enhance our C depth. Couturier would be amazing. Danault would be good too. I don't see the fit with Eichel.

Something I was thinking about randomly today was handedness. Look at the last several Stanley Cup winners/finalists' 1C's since the salary cap began and the winning/losing handedness:

2020: Point RH / Seguin RH
2019: O'Reilly LH / Bergeron RH
2018: Kuznetsov LH / Karlsson LH
2017: Crosby LH / Johansen RH
2016: Crosby LH / Thornton LH
2015: Toews LH / Stamkos RH
2014: Kopitar LH / Stepan RH
2013: Toews LH / Bergeron RH
2012: Kopitar LH / Henrique LH
2011: Bergeron RH / Sedin LH
2010: Toews LH / Richards LH
2009: Crosby LH / Zetterberg LH
2008: Zetterberg LH / Crosby LH
2007: McDonald LH / Spezza RH
2006: Staal LH / Horcoff LH

15 Stanley Cup winners, 13 of them shoot left handed. 30 centres overall 21 of which are left handed.

Perhaps we have the wrong handed 1C :sarcasm:

I see the fit in having two lines that feature top-10 C's in the league where a debate can be made that both are in the top-5 depending on how they perform.

That's the intriguing part.

With Saad to clean up down low would really make that a dangerous line and hard to handle. Too bad no cap space for Saad.

If you get Danault that probably means Saad isn't coming back unfortunately. But a Saad-Danault-Bura line would be really good.

Put it this way. As much as I want Jones, if you keep Saad and bring on Danault instead, that gives you two incredible lines. Now shore up 2RHD without going big on Jones. Don’t know if the Avs could swing it on the cap though.

With some careful tweaking to the bottom six, that’s a SC contender.

I think its do-able unless you have some crazy money in mind for both Saad and Denault.

Keep Landy's AAV down with more term (perhaps 7 x 6.5) and then jettison JTC & Kadri and you have room for Danualt and Saad both around 5M AAV. But you are stuck with a very low cost 4th line which might include Jost, LOC. Newhook 3C in this case.

I winced when I read that. I like those players but seeing these other teams 3rd and 4th lines convinced me your bottom 6 must have some mojo. They need balance across all 4 lines.

I absolutely believe Sakic atleast calls about Patrick, given his history of reclamation projects.

If you have to chose, who do you keep, Kadri or Saad ?

The clear answer is Saad.

If you have to chose between Compher and any better C, what do you do ?

The clear answer is any better C than Compher, just look for a new C. I was also looking for a more offensive C than Danault, but it could work if he can get his wingers going. Saad and Bura, that should be good enough for a solid second line.

We have the players for the last 2 lines, with Jost, Newhook, Nuke, LOC, Dong, Ranta. If needed trade Dong for some free agent like Armia, …

That's fair, have you watched enough of both Danault and Marcus Kruger to know how they compare defensively? Kruger ended up falling off quite quickly, not saying the same will happen with Danault, but just wondering how comparable those two were defensively.

I'd probably still make Danault one of the top priorities this offseason, as I do think Sakic needs to make more win-now moves and worry about the potential consequence down the road.

Danault is arguably the best defensive forward in the league. Kruger was in that good to great range... never elite. Kruger also had zero offense to help out. Danault is average to good in that area.

Not sure about that. Recent history would suggest this, but Saad had a great year and a great playoff in a contract year. There is no guarantee you get that level of play again. Furthermore, if you had asked this question at the end of last year it would be 'The clear answer is Kadri', as it was Kadri who had a great year and great playoff.

Given Kadri's positional importance I don't think the answer is clear at all. It's also Kadri's contract year now, so there is even more motivation for him.

Edit: My big concern around Kadri is that the league will over-punishing him based on his history. I'm not saying he shouldn't have been suspended, but if he does something next year that is worthy of a fine or 1-2 games to the average player, we could see him gone for an extended period of time, and that brings in risk to a team that is depending on him in the playoffs. I don't know if we should accept that risk. And that is nothing against him, its just reality of a team in a win now situation. He would be better off playing on a team that isn't looking at anything less than a cup win as a failure.
