You consider Jones to be very expensive right now? His cap hit is $5.4 million.

He "may" be very expensive to extend but right now $5.4 million for what he can do seems like a pretty decent number to me.
The cost to get Jones will be expensive. You have to think CBJ would look for a 1C or 1C potential coming back in the deal as that's one of their biggest needs.

He meant in terms of the asking price via trade.
Really? I'm not so sure of that.

"Seth Jones is that type but several tiers up and very expensive and will be even more expensive to extend."

Very expensive to acquire and very expensive to extend in the same sentence seems to indicate cost in terms of dollars. There is no player or draft pick asset cost to extend.

Trust me when I tell you he meant very expensive in terms of acquisition cost.

Even if EJ is healthy (big if) we are talking about a guy whose played 2 games in over a year now? Hes not exactly the youngest guy either. I don't mind having EJ around but I would not be putting him in a top 4 role or any role where hes heavily relied upon for the teams success. Bottom pairing guy who plays 12-15 mins a night on the second PK unit type of thing is fine with me. Its kinda like Calvert. I love the guy but he cant stay healthy so we shouldnt be relying on him playing in the bottom 6 for anything.

Jones would be ideal but I agree the cost will be immense.
I agree, but the Avs do need some changes so Graves never plays on top 4 again. Can you really go with Byram-Girard pair? Just doesn't seem right

That's a good point about his injuries. Probably best to stay away from injury prone Dmen. EJs injury problems are a big reason why we need a RHD really.

Maybe look in the Trade market for a RHD with 1 year left on his contract. I think in a years time one of Timmins or Barron would be ready for Top 4 RHD duties honestly. But not quite yet.
That would rule out Manson too.

Next year it should be

Toews - Girard
Byram - Makar
MacDonald - Timmins

I sincerely hope to hell Graves is out of the picture next season. He proved me wrong this season--when asked to play a third pairing role (albeit they told him to hang back more, which was a terrible mistake) he was terrible. Dude just needs to find another situation, he's no longer a fit with this team. I'd dump him on Lumbus since it looks like they're about to pull the plug.

Makar signing a bridge deal would help with the cap for the next few years and allow them to put a more competitive team on the ice but I'm not going to be mad about one of the best players in the league telling the Avs he wants he sign long-term to stay in Colorado. I don't care whether $9M, $10M, or more. Get it done.

Cale's contract is gonna be fascinating. A 22-year-old PPG defenseman coming off of a Norris-caliber sophomore season is kind of unprecedented. Praying for max term, but regardless I don't see how he comes in at anything under $10mill.

Toews-Girard will only work if Girard never repeats his performance in this playoffs otherwise playing him on the top pair will be even more of a problem. I won't feel comfortable with that pair going against teams like Vegas in the playoffs. Also doesn't seem like a better blueline with MacDonald and Timmins, that's just not a playoff d core. Maybe get a good shutdown D to play on bottom pair with Timmims. Someone physical

I miss EJ looking out for Girard.

I miss EJ too. I want him away from Girard though, his offensive game took a complete backseat when Girard got here so Girard can get all the offensive opportunities. Shooting it into shin pads aside, he had an underrated offensive repertoire and made some dangles that Girard can only dream of making.

Girard - Larsson
Byram - Barron

Those pairings get held in their own end for extended periods of time against a heavy forecheck. Just like this year.

A lot of people thinking cale is going to demand 9-10 mil. I think you’ll all be surprised. I don’t think there’s a guy in that dressing room looking to cash strap the team like that. 8.5m X 7 is my guess

Unless Cale Makar himself is negotiating with Joe Sakic or he instructs his agent to take less money to help the team, we can bank on Makar getting paid big time. Remember, agents make more money when their clients make more money. So there is zero reason for the agent to give the Avs any sort of deal here unless specifically instructed to do so by Cale Makar.
