One thing that you can almost bank on is that the Avs make a trade or two to get back some picks in this upcoming draft. There's no way Sakic goes into the draft with just a 1st, 3rd, and 7th round pick
If he's looking to recoup some draft picks he's got plenty of useless ****s to offer up for late round picks like Graves, Compher, Donskoi and Jost. Hell I'd take a 7th for each of those guys just to free up space.

I fault Bednar more than Sakic.

I don’t know who everyone wanted at the trade deadline. It seemed like the options were pretty limited and Hall chose to go to Boston.

Bednar refused to play Byram and wouldn’t even try Newhook and Soderberg at centre.

Can you fault Bednar for Nathan MacKinnon completely disappearing in games 3-5?

It’s hard to be mad at Joe Sakic for the job he’s done overall but there’s plenty of reason to question how he handled the trade deadline this year. Nearly 10M in cap space for a team that had JT Compher and Val Nichushkin both in his playoff top 6 and his deadline acquisitions were Soderberg and Nemeth. I consider it a complete failure.

Great post.

I hate Taylor Hall but he would have helped us with secondary scoring and the price wasn't that steep.

Even the Palmeri trade. He would have looked great.

Sam Bennett would have added some sandpaper.

Should have traded for Oleksiak.

There were tonnes of moves Sakic could have made for cheap and made us real hard to beat.

Imagine 1 or 2 of those above guys instead of Soderberg and Nemeth. We would be hard to beat.

Sakic should have pushed all his chips out the table and went all in to imrove this team and if he keeps being gun shy at the deadline we will be nothing more than 2nd round losers every year.

Another right hand defenseman with size that we should look into is Ristolainen. I know he has looked bad in his recent years but I think he has some untapped potential. He just seems trapped in a tough organization to play in.

The only untapped thing with Ristolainen is his ability to make the most stupid decision at any given time.

This team lost because of stupid mistakes made in games 5 and 6. You want to add one of the dumbest defensemen in hockey to this lineup?

You do not want Adam Larsson. He can't skate and has back problems.

That's a good point about his injuries. Probably best to stay away from injury prone Dmen. EJs injury problems are a big reason why we need a RHD really.

Maybe look in the Trade market for a RHD with 1 year left on his contract. I think in a years time one of Timmins or Barron would be ready for Top 4 RHD duties honestly. But not quite yet.

That doesn’t solve our problem. Getting bigger defenseman is a need.
No, getting a upper echelon 2nd line is a priority. This team was the better side in 3 of the 6 games against Vegas with this D without Byram, and playing without a 2nd line worth a damn.

How wouldn't that have solved our problem? Vegas wouldn't have been able to scheme entirely to stop Nathan MacKinnon.

You have MacKinnon on the ice one shift then on comes Eichel for the next shift. It's Crosby/Malkin 2021 version.

You take that ALL day over getting "bigger" defensemen.

Girard, Nemeth, Toews and Graves played like Garbage outside of game 1. Makar was neutralized by Vegas playing up towards the blue line in the offensive zone. In our own zone, we got our gibblets put in a vice and squeezed.

How is that plan working for Edmonton and Toronto?

I don't get this line of thinking. So because Edmonton and Toronto are struggling, we can't go big down the middle with a 1/2 punch?

What about the Pittsburgh example? What about Los Angeles with Kopitar/Carter? What about Boston with all their success having Bergeron/Krejci? Washington with Backstrom/Kuznetsov?

Go back even further than that. Detroit with Datsyuk/Zetterberg?

Come on now.
