I get wanting to keep Girard and putting a big guy next to him on the right side would certainly help but that means you are playing Byram on the 3rd pair and he will very shortly be too good for that and we have 3 guys on the left side all who are too good for bottom pair minutes. You could make the case that Byram needs time on the bottom pair and that Toews and Girard are better right now but then you run into the same problem next year where you should probably trade one if them and if I had to choose one of the 3 it would be Girard for multiple reasons.

I would trade Byram before Girard.

I wouldn't trade any of them right now. The last thing this team needs to start doing is trading high end talent because a prospect night one day be better.

We have no idea if Byram will ever be as good as Girard. If that day comes, you reassess which Dman is expendible at that point. Until then, think of it as a fantastic luxury to have, to be able to ice 3 LHD that could be elite puck moving and retrieving Dmen.

It’s been a luxury, until the playoffs. 4 years in a row. I think some of us are tired of losing to less talented but heavier teams.

I find it hard to argue that Vegas is less talented, their talent is in different areas. There's less high-end offensive ability, but significantly better two-way ability. I'd argue that Karlsson and Stone are way ahead of anyone on our team from a two-way perspective.

They have put together a team where every member plays a role. Which is different than the Avs who just collected a bunch of "talented players that need a chance".

Girard certainly isn't the reason this team lost 4 years in a row, but you continue to believe that.

Fortunately Joe Sakic understands this and you're not our GM.

he is one of the reasons lol. What series were you watching? Our defense despite having the puck first, turned it over like crazy and did not have the strength to win battles in our end, resulting in the knights being on attack for minutes at a time. It’s pretty clear having 3 small LHD that play the same style isn’t going to work. Doesn’t take a genius to figure that out.

You don't think Girard and his inability to handle the Vegas heavy forecheck and inability to cover Vegas forwards in front had anything to do with the Avs losing to Vegas?

Fortunately you're not the Avs GM.

If Jones actually wants to go to Colorado find a way to do it without moving Girard. Bring him in for a year and let he and Girard decide which of the two deserves to stay after next year. If it’s Jones and he’s willing to take a “hometown” discount trade Girard or Byram in a year. If Jones looks like he’s on a decline let him walk and treat him as a rental. If Jones isn’t willing to negotiate and is sold off at a rental price it’ll be a 1st/prospect and a roster player. We can do that. 1st + Ranta/Foudy + McDonald or something like that. Add another first if you need to. Whatever it costs but if you can outbid other teams on Jones by just using picks and prospects not names Newhook/Byram you have the pool to win that battle.

That's an interesting idea. Rent Jones for a year and see how he pans out. If you can get him without giving up Girard/Newhook/Byram then I'd be on board.

Wish list. But how do you keep everyone else including Landeskog and Saad? I'd literally like to see a workable proposal.

Haven’t quite figured that out lol. But I live in a bit of a fantasy world where I believe EJ’s contract is going to disappear easier than others. Graves is likely gone to Seattle. Donskoi and Compher are movable.

I would do Barron + Compher/Donskoi + Foudy/Ranta + 2021 1st right on the draft floor with a conditional 2022 1st if the Avs win the cup OR if Jones re-signs for Jones and Merzlikins.

This would be fantastic, but isn’t it kind of a weak offer from what they’ll be expecting?

I was reading about Fellini's 8 and 1/2 film where he said something like he wanted to explore the theme that we (i.e. people) live in, 'past/present/fantasy.' Anyway, I digress but yeah, I'm right there with you.

Sakic got the Hawks to give up the much better player in Saad and then retain on top of that. He can do it again for Jones’ last year.

I personally don't think I'd fix the RD issue over the summer (outside of Jones who you'd look to be here long-term). Fix the centers, maybe grab a wing like Coleman, dump some excess... then at the trade deadline look to grab a guy to insulate that spot. Just some of the names that could be rentals when that time comes around: Risto, Letang, Klingberg, Murphy, Miller, Manson, and Pulock. There is a solid chance that you could grab a solid RD for a rental and not have to carry the cap... plus you can flow through the season a bit to see if you want to sway to one side or another on the target.

Girard wasn't the only reason we lost but he played a part.

He is just not built for playoff hockey and the other teams know it.

I could definitely see a big trade happening at the draft for the Avs. There were rumblings that Sakic was big game hunting at the TDL, but now he knows he needs to he all-in. Think of the pieces the Avs could move now, that wouldn’t hurt them to lose. 2021 1st, Helleson, Barron, Kaut, Bowers, Ranta, Foudy etc… tons of trade chips

No but he was actually much worse than Nemeth whom everybody jumped on. You're looking at 12 goals vs 5. If you had to pick any player as the main culprit it was Girard who was just there to feed Vegas cheap goals whenever they wanted. You really think anybody is worried about having to play against a player like Girard, opposing players are probably licking their chops to feast on this bantam player that somehow made his way to the nhl.

Some fans of other teams have tried to downplay Makar's points per game by throwing around the "but he plays on a stacked team" argument but if anything that criticism actually applies to Girard. He doesn't really drive the play, he's only good at moving the puck through the NZ if the opposing team gives him a lot of free uncontested open ice and his passes are frequently suspect and off target. He actually gets chased down by forecheckers a lot for TOs because he's actually not that fast, just light on his feet. You don't really want him running your offense from the blue line because his shot is so bad and he's not really good at keeping the puck in the zone either. His points per game spiked up this season due to Makar's injury and getting the benefit of playing with the first pp unit the same way Kadri benefited from them last season. Expect his points per game to drop next season if he doesn't get that same kind of benefit and it won't be long before Byram takes over on the second powerplay unit (hopefully).

I think some fans have the wrong idea if they think people who are pushing for changes want to blow it all up like they want a complete overhaul to the team (I guess they're just trying to discredit the opposition by exaggerating things), we simply want to get rid of the bad parts that don't work and at least in my case replace them with something serviceable. Nothing complicated it will be like replacing Kadri with Donskoi on the powerplay, Donskoi isn't going to light it up there sure but at least he won't be killing plays and that's all you need with the type of talent the rest of the powerplay has.

Is there any chance we could get Byfield out of LA?

I’m a big fan of his game, so I’d probably be willing to give up more than most on this board.

He could start as a 3C next year and then work is way into the 2C role when Kadri’s contract expires.

No way in hell unless you’re handing them a franchise player of some kind. Really just a pipe dream. Unless he’s being dealt for someone like Eichel expect him to stay with the Kings.
