1. I don’t think getting an upgrade at 2C will cost them a Girard. A Byram or Newhook perhaps, but not Girard. Also, I’m not near as concerned about the team’s 2C situation as I am their 3C situation. They MUST upgrade that position this offseason. No excuses.

2. I’ve maintained a big reason Girard got stuck in his own zone a lot was because of Bednar’s insistence on giving him defensive partners with NO puck skill. One of the Vegas goals in game six was in part because Sammy coughed up the puck but it wasn’t the primary reason. In that play, the Avs actually got it back but then Jost decided to pass it from behind the net to Nemeth (and that was a poor choice by Jost because Nemeth was in poor position to receive it) who promptly turned it over, and then…goal. Right there are the other glaring issues compounding Girard’s struggles. And those puck support issues IMO are relatively easy to correct. Get Nemeth and Graves the f*** outta there and give G at least a competent defensive partner and then the opposition won’t key in on him so much. Also, better puck support up front, as in NOT JOST, and those turnovers aren’t nearly as glaring.

Lastly (and I know this is a long post) players around G just need to…play better. That Karlsson goal was WAY more on Landeskog, who made a dumb pass out of the corner to G and then proceeded to cover no one in the low slot area so Karlsson was wide f***ing open at the top of the right circle).

Sam Girard will never be an Alex Pietrangelo. We know that. But neither will Seth Jones. But make better roster and tactical decisions with Girard and he will be much more effective. It was poor planning by Bednar and his staff to just throw G out there on his own and hope he just figures it out. Adjustments should have and could have been made.

There's a few options I have in mind if Graves ends up in Seattle and the Avs target a new partner for Girard. Montour, Savard, Larsson. Although I think that 2/3 C is too high of a priority to use up our cap space on one of them.

So Devon Toews and Sam girard are better dman than Seth Jones? You guys agree with this? Seeing alot of this being talked about on Twitter and Insta.

Right now? Yes. But I still don’t know how much of Jones’s decline was due to Torts driving Lumbus into the ground. I still think whoever gives Jones and long-term deal will come to regret it.

Respectfully disagree. 2C is THE issue.

It would be nice if there was a RHD out there to partner him with so he could stay on the left. I don’t really like Montour at all though, and Larsson can’t skate anymore. Savard is 30 and will likely land a fairly lucrative deal. He’d be the best option among those you listed here though.

I’d at the very least like to see him partnered with Toews again, with whom he looked his best, or maybe…Timmins? I don’t know. If Byram can stay healthy and take that top pairing spot alongside Makar, then I think everything else falls into place pretty easily.

I don’t think people realized how much strain playing with Graves and Nemeth put on Girard. Not only did both of them suck and play poor defensively, mishandle the puck, and lose battles continually, they were CONSTANTLY out of position. TMV noted in that Reilly Smith breakaway goal that Graves drifted from left to right repeatedly, leaving G confused as to which side to offer. The coaches noticed it too because they essentially benched his ass after that.

The Avs have a decent option at 2C. Kadri had a rough season but last season and postseason he was more than adequate.

Jost is not the answer at 3C. You at least need a 3C who isn’t entirely out of place playing up in the lineup if one of those other guys go down (or is suspended). Jost is a 4th line guy that was asked to play as a 2C and he failed miserably. Not a diss on him personally, that’s just not a level he’s capable of.

2C is a concern, but not a primary issue. 3C, there isn’t anyone on the roster who really solves that issue. It’s been an issue for over two years now. They HAVE to address it. No more bandaid solutions.

Makar, Toews, Girard and Byram as our top 4. I can see us winning many Presidents' Trophys with that group.

I don't even know what to make of Timmons. Sometimes he looked like he belonged, others he looked totally lost.

Anywho, someone who I forgot to add that I could see Sakic targeting is Carlo. Although I don't really feel that great about that target either.

First and foremost, I’m a big time analytics guy. However I’m quickly learning that most analytics people hold regular season analytics above all else when in reality there are intangibles and other things that matter when it comes to playoff hockey. Hits are harder, forechecks are heavier, clutching and grabbing happens far more often as defenders know they won’t be penalized.
The clutch doesn’t exist according to stat whackers.

I think Timmins had a fine season. I think people forget it was his rookie year, and in the end he looked like a rookie. But by the time playoffs came around he looked pretty dang good to me.

Yeah I don’t know much about Carlo to be honest so I’ll refrain from saying anything apart from concerns about his recent concussion issues.

Timmins had a rough start this season, landed back in the minors and seemed to finally find his game. I thought he was quite good in the series against Vegas, albeit in a slightly sheltered role. Still played more minutes as the series went on though. Alongside MacDonald in a third pairing role I think he’d be phenomenal.

3C could be Stastny. I think he can still fill this role. And if he signs a cheap and short contract - problem solved.
Save the money for a real 2C. Benefits the AVS and Mack.
